I made this and I love it! When I watched the video, I heard Lynn say you can use the lapel stick to hold the mini charms in place and a Light went on!! I did this "quilt as you go"... I put my strips together, laid out my mini's with a lapel stick, sandwiched it and sewed the zig zag back and forth, then all I had to do was trim it and add my binding. THANKS!
I have made this design in a king-size quilt for my daughter. It is in shades of blue and cream she absolutely loves it. I have learned so much through your tutorials thank you for teaching
Thank you! I am one of those gals who bought the tiny squares and then didn't know what to do with them! The ones I have will be perfect on my table. Thank you for great inspiration, as always.
Another great video. Thanks ladies. I love doing runners for gifts. I like the idea of making one for each of the holidays. I think halloween and christmas fabrics would be fun to do.
You could use the Elmer's glue-basting technique for those little guys! Little bit of glue under the squares, hit it with a hot iron, et voila!! You could also spray it with Scotchgard (since it's not being used as a quilt) to help keep foods and drinks from staining it. Thank you for this adorable project!!
This is a great idea, but I would sandwich my batting and backing together before I sewed the squares on. Now the runner would be quilted and ready to add the binding. If desired I could add more quilting between the rows, but wouldn't be necessary and you could have it done in no time!
Jenny is right, you can lay these end to end and chain stitch them. And then go back and sew the corner to corner seam down and back. If you ask me, you can layer it with back and batting too before sewing the candies down, and then finish with binding. I have a Candie pack and I am going to try it.
saving this in favs for next week. I am in the process of making a dresser scarf and 3 pillow shams for a customer. Wishing I could go cut my fabrics right now. I started collecting a whole bin of Kansas Trouble basic fabrics after watching and purchasing Five and Dime/ & Loose Change book and tools. I have fallen in love with the fabric line. TY for this great tutorial. BTW I am making a zig zag runner from one of your earlier videos out of the charm pack of Holiday Medley. Texas says Hey!
How do you think it would work if you put your sandwich together first then sewed the squares on with your walking foot? When you're done, it would already be partially quilted.
Ok it's 7 years ago since this video. And I'm sure you all have heard so many comments. On how to place the mini triangles on the fabric. But I'm watching for the first time. And love this design by the way. But I'm thinking? Maybe use fabric that's ironed on to freezer paper. Then cut 2-1/2" squares out. Then turn iron onto 5 in fabric piece. This way sewing can be done around the triangles.
I LOVE watching you jenny. you are so awesome and sew like I do.... I do laugh when you talk about the special feet and other things the machines do. I inherited my mothers machine that was bought in 1979. it replaced the machine I was using (that still works but has nothing fancy at all) that was bought for me in 1969 as a graduation present. I can't find a walking foot to fit mine so have to do without. I would love to have a machine that does all the fancy stuff and takes the guesswork out of things but, the cost is not in my budget and so will keep using my 'oldie but goodie'. God bless you.
Wondering if you could just do 4 strips on the background and then your candies. I do like really wide runners because of the way my table is. I noticed her quilting. Can you do another video on how to set it up with the batting and backing . I am not good yet at quilting so what would be a good way to quit it ? Her' s is quite intricate . Thanks for all the info I love it
I think the sewing and quilting can all be done in one step too. I think spray basting with 505 would be best for securing the batting and backing. Pins would be a real headache on this project.
I wish the sound system was better, Jenny's and the guest voices sound like they are inside a steel drum. I noticed some of the new videos are being done in a new studio and the sound is not what it used to be. I love Jenny's videos and believe I wouldn't be quilting had it not been for videos like this one. I will always appreciate Jenny and her team for all their hard work and couldn't say thank you enough!
Just wondering about the math on this project- each row uses 12 squares 4 x is 48 - mini packs come in 42. So you would need to buy 2packs which creates scrap squares or alter the size. Am I correct??
I use your lapel glue stick all the time when I teach. Hold onto your hat.... you are using way more glue than you need to.... Ha! Less glue is better. You can use just the tiniest dab of glue just off center and it will hold your candy in position for as long as you need it to. It dries quickly and is water soluble. So if you go ahead and glue all the candies before you do any sewing, the dabs will dry and will be zip zap ready for quick zig zag sewing 1/8" from the raw edge. Another great tutorial! Thank you!
Hi Cindy! We always list the links to the products in the video description. Here's the link to Lynne's book: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/22347. Hope that helps!
Maybe you should write where your walking foot is, in your journal Jenny lol :D Also, I've seen on needleturn applique tutorials that they iron the lapel glue or glue sticks (elmers washable school glue sticks are washable and good to use) well, not the actual glue stick lol they iron the fabric to set the glue....that might work on these runners so you could glue the whole row.
Is this something novice, very novice, lol, beginners like me could do? I would like to see how to do the quilting/batting if that is possible also. Great video and project!
I love all Jenny's videos but I don't see how you can do this in 2.5 hours with all the zig zagging and lifting the presser foot and turning back and forth to go around the candies.

More than 6 years after you did your video I'm trying this zig-zag quilt - brilliant!
love this pattern and love the fabric in the video! Jenny, keep laughing. You make me smile when you do!
What a cute design! I love that you can just add fabric squares on top of a layer of fabric! Love the idea that you can make it for every season, too!
Thank you! I am one of those gals who bought the tiny squares and then didn't know what to do with them! The ones I have will be perfect on my table. Thank you for great inspiration, as always.
Fantastic, so glad this one is useful for you Ellie Guhl!!!
Ok! You 2 ladies are having way too much fun!😂❤️
My two favorite ladies! Ya'll are just great together! Love this idea. Sweet, fast runner. Thanks.
Sweet and fast are what we love, too! Thanks, Melanie Varela!!
You two are great together! Nice project.
We had a blast! Thanks for watching!!
Another great video. Thanks ladies. I love doing runners for gifts. I like the idea of making one for each of the holidays. I think halloween and christmas fabrics would be fun to do.
Oh! So do we!!!
You ladies are fun!!! Thank you for sharing yet another fun, easy, and quick project! :) Bravo!
I love the idea of doing a blanket stitch around the pieces, too!

Love this. You two are such fun to watch together.
You always inspire me to get my machine out and start sewing.

Using (6) 8" wide strips and (25) 5" charm squares - this will be a 48 x 50 lap quilt!
Another fun project - a table runner would be a perfect size to learn this on.

Awesome! Please share pics of yours with us on Facebook martyglo7!
would love to see a tour of the Famous Missouri Star Quilt Co and Meet and Greet of your Staff

another fun item on my list. thanks ladies!!
I love whatever you do and I have learned a lot from you anf I love your way of doing the quilt. Thank you so much. Happy Thanksgiving to all .
Cute project. Your nails look great!!!
Mom says thanks!!!!
Love this idea. I have some beautiful Christmas material, and moda squares. I will be using these, and posting on Craftsy.
can your put a blanket stitch on it?

Love the project... I've gotta try that...
Waited at the end of the video for the "quack" - no quack!
So glad you loved this one, Terri Johnson! Changing things up a bit. Sorry to disappoint!
Well, thats pretty neat. I think I will look into that layered patchwork. I like that idea. Thanks a f ain foy yet another great tutorial.
Thanks so much for watching, Nora H! We can't wait to see what you come up with!

Thank you for this video....I think I could do this...you both made it look so easy to do..I think doing for each season would be great...
Hace mucho que no toco mi maquina, ha sido ver el video y qué ganas! me ha motivado mucho ;)
Stephen needs to make a bag out of this!!!
love this idea. And even better when fast to sew up. Thanks its on my to do list...
Thanks so much!

I can't type I meant to say I do not like wide runners
I totally think you can do however many strips you want.
Christine T thanks I am going to try it....
We agree with Christine, the number of strips is totally up to you!
MissouriQuiltCo
Thanks , I love watching these videos... I hope to learn from them... Made costumes all my life, trying to learn to do something else.
I think the sewing and quilting can all be done in one step too. I think spray basting with 505 would be best for securing the batting and backing. Pins would be a real headache on this project.
Make it your own Into Books!
this would be a good hand stitching project, secure the candies down with a running stitch....neat runner. thanks

Thanks for the input Dana Coombs. We're working on it. Thanks so much for watching!!
I just had an idea. Could you iron the mini charms on and either blanket or zigzag around the edges? 🙆
This would be great with a decorative stitch.

could you use a zig zag stitch ad like decoration??
bought some candy squares 2 years ago, still haven't used them !
very nice, easy to follow thanks for the lovely idea :)
what about fusing appliqué the squares?
How did you do the quilting?
what book is this pattern in? Love all of the tutorials and your Block magazine.
Hi Cindy! We always list the links to the products in the video description. Here's the link to Lynne's book: www.missouriquiltco.com/shop/detail/22347. Hope that helps!
Is there any way this could be made into a baby quilt? The pattern and number of squares in sequence boggles my mind for some reason.
Love it!
so let me get this straight.....there are no quarter inch seam allowances on the two and half inch??
Maybe you should write where your walking foot is, in your journal Jenny lol :D

I'm going to do this but layer my quilt sandwich then add the zigzag.
Is this something novice, very novice, lol, beginners like me could do? I would like to see how to do the quilting/batting if that is possible also. Great video and project!
Of course it is! The great thing about videos is that you can start and stop. We're here to help!!
I love all Jenny's videos but I don't see how you can do this in 2.5 hours with all the zig zagging and lifting the presser foot and turning back and forth to go around the candies.
Give it a shot, Dana Crocco! I think you will be surprised how quickly this one comes together!
