  • Ralph Baumgartl is talking to Harald Grosskopf the german Drummer who recorded the legendary Electronic Album “Synthesist”. Harald played an important role in the development of the electronic music scene in Germany during the 1970s. From 1971 until 1975 he was the drummer of the german band “Wallenstein”. During that time he also collaborated with Manuel Göttsching, Klaus Schulze and Tangerine Dream in “The Cosmic Jokers” and “Cosmic Courier” sessions that were taking place at the studio of Dieter Dierks. He then joined Manuel Göttsching’s band Ashra. Harald was also playing the drums on several classic Klaus Schulze studio albums. In 1979 he recorded his legendary album “Synthesist” using a “Sequential Circuits Prophet 10” synthesizer. And in 1981 he founded the “Neue Deutsche Welle” band “Lilli Berlin”. This is an informative interview full of fascinating stories anecdotes. Enjoy!

    Can't thank enough for this interview! Lots of insights that's resonating with me. About Klaus Schulze (still a huge fan of his prolific work), about 'killing Buddhas' and 'electronic rebellion' and about darker side of musicianship. Every now and then too feeling insecure, lazy and alienated, almost convinced myself that nobody cares about my amateur ugly music. It's invaluable that kindred souls like Harald Grosskopf can reignite the fire inside. And it's easier to carry on. Thank you so much!

      Hello Vladlen, Thank you very much for watching and commenting! I am really glad that you were able to get some inspiration from this interview. It’s my very aim to let my interviewees also share their life hacks and lessons they have learned during their music careers, because that’s where the real treasures are hidden ;-) Of course I am also asking them about their music equipment, but I am constantly striving to find the right balance between gear and lessons learned from life.
      Thanks again for watching and commenting. Cheers Ralph

    Ralph, I have just seen this for the first time and thank you so much for a great interview of a living electronic music legend! I remember buying a very expensive (for a 16yo) import copy of Synthesist from Gaslight Records in Australia in 1982 and it immediately got me hooked on electronic music. Thanks again, wonderful job.

    Ralph, once again thanks for sharing these amazing interviews. I was also very deep into the early German Cosmic Rock and other German underground/avant-garde bands since 20 years ago, I discovered all this music scene through Julian Cope's book. I can say that this music not only blew my mind and life, but also was a major influence and link to other subjects... Harald is another true magician and a one of a kind human being, his drumming force on albums like The Cosmic Jokers or Wegmuller's "Tarot" blew my brains out into the deep cosmos... Keep on doing this excellent job... Cheers and best wishes on your future interviews and projects.

      +Bender Graph The track "So weit so gut" is the first one on the album "Synthesist". When I put the Vinyl on my record player and "So weit so gut" was blasting from the loudspeakers, it felt like being hit by an ocean of good vibes...Cheers Ralph

    So cool! So, Ralph, you're like famous and all now, right? I mean getting interviews with these heroes of the early German electronic scene and all! Had to make a comment as soon as I saw the video was available...can't listen to it now, but I'm looking forward to it!
    ...As a side note, I think I remember hearing Klaus Schulze once being quoted as saying that Grosskopf was the only drummer he knew who could play to a sequencer. Most drummers at the time were used to bands following their rhythm, not following someone (or something) else's beat.

    • @RalphBaumgartl
      @RalphBaumgartl  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +emdotambient It’s my appreciation for electronic music and the achievements of these early pioneers what drives me to just approach them. This interview is full of interesting anecdotes. And yes, Harald is talking about his collaboration with Klaus Schulze and how the sequencer/drum playing style developed. Let me know how you like these stories after you have watched the interview. Cheers Ralph

      Well, I didn't know Porn or Berlin until I managed a hi-fi shop that also rented movies in the early eighties.Hard to remember, but it seemed that the music was adopted, rather than made for some California Porn producer ? I'm sure Berlin has it's own industry, so did they actually contract for the soundtrack ? K-werk was about the only thing I collected back then.

      Klaus Schulze was hired to score the music for the movie “Body Love”. Harald Grosskopf was playing the drums on this soundtrack. In my interview with Eberhard Panne (Sound Engineer for Klaus Schulze) we are also touching on this production. The interview is in German. th-cam.com/video/OA2vgmHI0tM/w-d-xo.html
