    FF6 absolutely has the most obscure status effect. Shadow had the status Interceptor, his dog. If you left Shadow die at the end of the World of Balance, Relm gains the Interceptor status in the World of Ruin. It can also be transferred to any party member(or enemy, be careful with giving it to enemies, because if they die, the Interceptor status is gone forever) with the ability Ripper.
    The Interceptor status is a 50% chance to block physical attacks done to the person with the status, upon blocking, Interceptor will counter-attack with either Takedown or Wild Fang. Both counter-attacks are defence-ignoring magic damage of 55 damage or 66 damage, respectively. If the enemy is Floating the counter-attack will miss.
    There's no way that Interceptor isn't the most obscure status effect, as no one even knows it's a status.

      I really loved the hyper/sad thing with its sort of offense v defense decision, and also how it might have you debating whether to use an Inn versus a tent since inns removed the status.

    There is also another unique status effect in FF 12 that only one boss in the entire game can cast, and its not anywhere else in the entire game. Demon Wall have abilities that can inflict the status X-Zone on characters, effectively removing them completely from battle. This cant be healed, its not like KO, where you die, this is a complete removal from the battle, and whoever gets inflicted with this will temporarily be completely unavaliable, and cant be used for anything. It was a luck-based game when playing against Demon Wall.

    I think confuse from Final Fantasy 8 deserves a mention.
    While many games in the series have confuse, it usually just causes a character to attack a random target, friend or foe. In Final Fantasy 8 though, confuse can cause you to do anything. Attack someone, cast spells, use items, nothing is off the table.

    • @ThundagaT2
      @ThundagaT2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      X-2's confuse is way worse imo, since in that one, item use tends to be picked over most actions and you can end up wasting valuable items like megalixirs.

    I think it's worth noting that Costume appears in XIV as well as XI during certain quests in the wilds. Some main scenario, as well as a couple of the arkasodara tribal quests. You're only ever limited to actions dictated by the costume, and often needed to fully dispel and return to reapply if you got caught by failing the objective or just getting aggroed by a monster.

    My favorite is the one that stops auto hp regeneration in the Unknown Garlean Soldier bit. It’s not super complex but the effect it has on the storytelling is massive; it makes you feel so weak to have such a core gameplay feature you took for granted since level 1, and yet, it is beyond any Garlean soldier’s wildest dreams.

  • @LucasTheDrgn
    @LucasTheDrgn ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think the Concept statuses from FFXIV's Pandaemonium 8 Savage fight are pretty unique and fairly obscure since it's high level content that only a subset of players would ever see. The idea behind them was that you would be given one of three sets of "concepts", and by standing next to a player with another status, you could "take on the properties" of one of six different creatures, though the ultimate use was that you would create the creatures required to withstand the damage type given by specific towers that would then appear. Later in the fight (High Concept 2) they further developed on it, requiring players to combine the "fire" and "wind" type concepts to make a Phoenix, which would then allow the party to revive after taking a hit designed to always defeat them.
    Then again, FFXIV has so many unique status effects, especially for these higher level fights, that you could make an entire 7 more obscure status effects video about just savage/ultimate fights

    I always made sure I had a character with a Serum gambit to heal it.

    I always appreciate the representation for FFXI in your channel's videos. So many Final Fantasy channels either ignore the game altogether or spread misinformation.
    My favorite implementation of the Costume status was the Viscous Liquid that could be found in Mamook & Mamool Ja Training Grounds Assaults. Drinking the liquid gave you the costume status and turned your character into a Mamool Ja. While disguised as a Mamool Ja, enemies would not be aggressive and you were free to travel through the area without fighting, but it also applied a potent damage over time to you that could prove lethal if you were not careful.

    ff8 Meltdown with its defense down status effect is quite interesting as well than we would have levitation status in different games different versions of curse which basically could also include no exp gain. other positive buffs would be the Ex fire, lightning, ice.... spells from FFX for example. FF7 with bubble is also an honorable mention or how would be the 7777 buff in FF7 for example which is only granted when players have 7777 hp. With morph and card you could also argue that they have some kind of status effect inherited and so on and on and on ^^ Also shattered the status following stone after further attacks

    Disease in FF12 is particularly clever in how bad it is due to the gambit system. Since most healing gambits work on a % basis, they won't be targeted for healing and it isn't cured by esuna. So, it can take quite a while to even notice what's happening particularly when playing on wait mode. (Unless you already have the specific item / healing spell ready)

  • @Superman64GOTY

    So many from FF6 could count, but I'll focus on two:
    1) Heat: an unnamed status caused by using Edgar's air anchor on an enemy. A 'heated' enemy would instantly die if they performed a battle action.
    2) Charm (not 'confuse', but 'charm'): rare, unnamed status ailment that could only be inflicted by the enemy move 'Entice', and only three enemies (two of whom were bosses) had it. Characters who were charmed would only attack allies or themselves until they or the monster that used 'Entice' were KO'ed, after which the spell was broken.
    Extra weird was getting and using 'Entice': In the World of Ruin, in Owzer's mansion in Jidoor, there is a painting of flowers which, when inspected, would instigate a battle with three flower enemies known as Rafflesia. This is the only time these enemies can be fought (and they are missable if you beat the mansion dungeon first). If then found on the veldt and learned as a rage (good luck with that), Gau could use Entice as part of the Rafflesia rage; and here's the kicker: THERE ARE NO ENEMIES IN THE GAME THAT RESIST ENTICE. AT ALL. THIS INCLUDES THE FINAL BOSS. YOU CAN MAKE KEFKA PUNCH HIMSELF TO DEATH.

    In Final Fantasy 6, it turned out that Shadow's dog, Interceptor, is a "status effect"! Using a certain Lore blue magic spell, an enemy could dog-nap Interceptor, resulting in the dog's permanent loss! Using Confuse and that Lore spell, it is possible to transfer Interceptor to the command of other characters besides Shadow or Relm.

      Not so self-explanatory considering that it also reduces Spirit to 0. Also hilarious against the Red Giant, which is supposed to be a puzzle boss requiring you to rely on Gravity magic and fixed damage attacks, but since they neglected to make it immune to Vit-0, inflicting that status makes the battle trivial, while the Red Giant will still mock the futility of using things other than Gravity magic, even as they inflict thousands of points of damage.

    XIV has some interesting status/debuff effects that could be considered as well due to their rarity thanks to the different kind of game and action, as well as how to resolve them
    Beyond Death is really interesting as it will kill you when the timer expires, and can only be resolved by _taking lethal damage_ - doing so will leave you at critical health but keep you alive.
    Walking Dead is similar in that it will kill you before the timer expires, but can only be cured by being healed equal to your maximum HP. While this is similar to some interpretations of Doom, the only two instances of it (the Living Dead of Dark Knight and the True Living Dead of the Seat of Sacrifice boss) trigger Walking Dead when you hit 1 HP.

    disease in XII freaked me out when i first encountered it. for any other status (except oil i think?) a character could be KO'd and be revived and be rid of the status, but disease persisted AND made their HP 1! It was especially harrowing because by that time i don't think the vaccine was readily available in stores yet or you wouldn't think to get it. Not only that, but you're so far away from any civilization when you first encounter it that you'd have to do some major backtracking just to look for it. I mean teleport crystals, sure, but it's a lot for one status effect to stop the player in their tracks like that.

    The FFXIV version of Old is amusing. (Potential spoiler below.)
    In the relevant boss fight, the character goes to one of four chests to gain this status. It briefly turns the character into an old woman, disables all weaponskills, spells, and abilities, and, most importantly, keeps them from becoming Seduced by the boss and walking into that big nasty AoE shown at the end of the clip.
