  • Today we show you how to install an ISSPRO classic type tachometer into an autometer gauge pod for the column mounted type in a 1st gen cummins. I was looking for something that wasn't so intrusive, and wouldn't block my field of view on the pillar or dash so this worked out and is in a great spot!
    Enjoy and stay tuned for more videos.

    Thanks for the video I'm doing the same as soon as the parts show up. what did you end up doing to get the light assy to fit in the pod? I know u cut the tube off but what was the end product?

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn't show it because it wasn't exactly perfect, but we ended up just zip tying the bulb assembly to the back of the housing. The light wasn't inside of the gauge housing but close enough that the light still was bright enough to light up the face of the gauge. If you end up cutting off the back part of the bulb housing on the gauge let me emphasize the importance of not using anything that will create metal filings as you do not want to get them inside the gauge housing as it will ruin the performance of the gauge.

    I could not find this column pod on auto meter...the only one says it’s for 94-02 and looks identical you said this is for first and second gen but the autometer answers to people asking if it would fit a first gen all say no... it looks like it would fit but I don’t know if I want to risk it for 45$...

    Is it just for 92 & 93 for the factory wiring harness? I have a 91 and I have been wanting to put a tach on for a while. And can you put some links for the items that you purchased ?

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      From what I have learned online, it's pretty rare to find non-intercooled trucks with the wiring harness already there. Just take a look under your dash to see if the factory plug is there for the optional tach, if not then you will have to run your own harness for the crank position sensor.

      larry batta Check out the part of the video where I go underneath the dash. Mine was taped to a thick part of the wiring harness, your might be covered but keep searching it should be there! If it isn't you will have to do some further research and how to hook it up.

    Doing this mod soon, does the gauge dim with the rest of dash lights?

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The gauge didn't come with a light however I installed my own LED light to match the rest of my gauge lights. LED's in general don't dim very well but it still does dim with the rest of the dash lights.

    is your tach correct in your idle being set at 500? isn't that a bit low?

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Factory recommendation is 800rpm, says it right on the side of the timing case on the motor. I like to set mine just past the point so nothing is rattling in the cab, so probably aroun 600-650. As long as it isn't too low and you have good oil pressure I'd say it's fine. I'd keep the idle up higher though when warming up in cold weather.

    • @robertleigh5242

      The only rpm that nothing rattles in my cab is 0. Yea I am going to mess around with it a little I currently have it at 850

    I just hooked this up in my truck made my own harness with some wire, and also my light bulb holder only had 2 black wire coming out of it. I had to guess when hooking it up which one goes to which connection. When I fire up the truck the tach bumps up a bit and then stays at zero, could the bulb wiring effect the power to the gauge itself?

    • @OvensGarage
      @OvensGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is also the potential that your CPS may not be working correctly as that is where the signal for the tach comes from.

    • @masonstruck9006
      @masonstruck9006 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OvensGarage it was wierd I changed a fuse around and the tach worked but but not right. Would only read up to 1500rpm and wasn’t very accurate

    • @OvensGarage

      Yeah it’s just pushed in there. Had to modify the light pod a bit just to get it to fit. It’s snug. Hasn’t come loose or caused me any issues since install.

      I’ve been using this tach now for quite a while with the getrag manual trans. I can say my rpms I usually shift around 2000-2500, and when I’m cruising at highway speeds I’m at 1700. I rarely ever go over 2500. Even with the 3200 spring.
