  • Welcome back! In this video I show you how to install an Auto Meter Z Series Diesel Tachometer into a First Gen Cummins. If you were buying one of these trucks back in the day, you would have been able to add a dealer tachometer option. Since my truck doesn't have one, I came across the Z Series Tachometers by Auto Meter Competition Instruments that look fairly similar to the original dealer options. This process can be applied to any diesel truck out there and it is an elegant solution if you want to install a tach. Enjoy!

    This helps. Gotta intall a tach on my skid steer. Was a Wisconson 4 cylinder. Previous owner swapped in a Deutz 2 cylinder. Been wanting to stick a Tach on it for months, finally found the Auto Meter. Just needed more info. Sweet truck by the way.

      Hey thanks! Glad we could help. Definitely makes tackling challenges easier with a follow along vid.

    Happy you chose to use 3m tape to mount it. I like it when pilots listen to their FEs. Lol....also, great idea with trick-f**king the tach. I'd have done the same.

    I'm wondering how you found such a clean 12v, especially in BC, must have cost two kidneys lol
    Gonna be using this video to put a tach on my 6.9 IDI, thank sir!

      Thanks! Been a lot of work bringing her back but mostly right place, right time, and good people. Make sure to check out my second video regarding the calibration. I miss read the instructions in the first vid. Cheers!

      @@roughcutsgarageI got the tach put on thanks to your video. Now need to figure out why it jumps when idling if I put my headlights on. Ps my idle also read a bit high but after calibrating at 1100 like you, it read 100 too high at cruising RPM, might be worth checking what the tach reads vs laser rpm at about 2K.

      @@GSKYYT I messed up in this video and made a follow up vid on how to properly calibrate it with a DTA. The tach needs to be in the 8 cyl mode because of how the DTA talks to it. th-cam.com/video/mfsUPaz7lqQ/w-d-xo.htmlsi=FPjRI2GcGGEFuRur

      @@roughcutsgarage appreciate the response, I have a 6.9 V8 ford so I’m thinking it’s something else since the ammeter also jumps around.

      @@GSKYYT Ahh okay, yeah mine jumps around a bit when the grid heaters cycle. I also find different draws on the system will cause the tach to jump around randomly too. Good luck and happy to help!

    Lol! You have gauges that actually work? I'm down to Amps guage only. Looking into gps speedo and tach, egt and oil pressure

      Could probably find and swap out with a replacement gauge cluster. The GPS speedo and tach sounds sweet though. I use the speed on my Garmin more than my actual speedo.

    You had to trick the tack because you had it set wrong for the DTA, the tach needs to be in 8 cyl mod as the DTA emits 4 pulses per revaluation. It docent specifically say what to set the tach too in the instructions you kind of have to back your way into it. hope this helps

    • @roughcutsgarage
      @roughcutsgarage  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment. Still a bit confused considering the instructions outline that for a 6 cyl engine, it says to configure the tach in the way I demonstrated. I take it you tried the 8 cyl mode on a 5.9 I6 Cummins?

    • @acman157

      @@roughcutsgarage if you were not using a DTA you did set the tach correctly, the tach instructions are for using it on a gas engine connected to the coil, when this is done it will receive half the pulses that there are cylinders per rev so on a six cylinder it gets three pulses per rev, the DTA outputs 4 pulses per rev (that's in fine print in the instructions kind of dumb) so the tach needs to be in 8cyl mode. Basically the instructions for the DTA trump the instructions for the tach. That's why the tach red 1250-1300 at 1000 rpm it had an extra pulse that it sees as more rpm. So by tricking it to read correctly at idle it's actually wrong everywhere else now. I have not installed one of these kits I came across this video while researching this product as I plan to install one on a Cummins as well. Hopefully this comment finds you well just trying to help

      Ahhhh okay! That makes so much more sense now. Thank you! Definitely going to try it out. Might make a follow up video regarding this. Cheers!
