@@Theon435 maybe you shouldnt ditch your meds.....asian is whoever is native from asia...you know...the fucking continent with the very similiar name....the only exception would probably be some russian ethnicities who were based on the european continent.
@@Theon435Not entirely wrong. Sure it's defined as what most people see in their specific geographical location but let's not forget the weight of impact the US has on the rest of the world, especially the UK. As I know it, in the UK we south Asians don't actually "own" the term 'Asian' as you might think. 'Asian' for us in UK includes South Asia but predominantly (as it is globally more known) Asian is East and South-East Asians too. UK has a lot of influence from many places, including North America and Europe (especially its closest neighbours Ireland and France. France sitting strongly on East asians = only Asians, inside knowledge from myself, a francophone who has spoken to plenty of french people). but I'd say the idea of 'Asian' is generally a lot larger here than just East(+SE) Asia in comparison to other places (e.g. France).
Even in the grocery stores, Asian aisles are dedicated to East Asian and SE Asian cuisines and a separate Indian section for South Asia. Also the social aspect - it's not any less than this.
growing up in UK people deny South Asians as being Asian still, though over time it's even becoming more accepted.
@@Theon435 In the UK South Asians as you call them (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) typically get called Indians.

8:22 Sushi actually first popped up in China before anyone ever thought about serving raw, smoked, or steamed fish on rice in bite-sized portions like conventional sushi you see in Japan now. Even though its a global Japanese staple food, you can still say that its roots lie in China... like many other Asian dishes like Ramen, Tea and the culture around Tea, Soy Sauce, Gyoza (Dumplings), etc. In fact, a majority of modern Asian staple foods can be traced back to China and India and even Europe with how they introduced cooking techniques and other foods.
I mean, a lot of East Asians, Japanese included have their roots in China, same as a lot of western Europeans have their roots in Germany
Caleb is correct. Those of us that do speak the language, and are frequent enough with it in a daily basis can tell between the difference of someone that's been taught from young versus a person that learnt the language much later in life. Kevin's mandarin, while very good, can still be discernible to fluent speakers, especially mainlanders because of the small tells you pick up from mannerisms, slang, and even the way a person describes things. Similar to how some people can tell what part of Los Angeles you're from depending on the way you speak.
But he also lived in China and is married to a Chinese woman. He picked up slangs too from that specific part of Beijing.
@@zkart8038While that may be true, there are still many things he doesn't understand about the culture as only a person who's experienced it first hand as a child would. Like the "Pockey" part of the video. He wasn't saying it to be funny. He was doing his best to mask himself with the others during the competition but even he didn't immediately think of the word "proud" in his mind like the others have because of the significant meaning behind it. Even the way he answers some of the questions comes off a bit off-put and even harsh, not common to how some Asian cultures would generally answer in a public setting.

Asian culture is still very class system oriented. Rating eachother is part of their DNA. Either in their own communities or other nationalities.
i'd say thats a human thing not just an asian thing, for obvious reasons.
@slXD100 Everyone does it, but Asian cultures are generally more formally hierarchical than those most Western nations. Even how people address each other in day to day conversation depends on factors like age and seniority.
@@sebfox2194 well idk what you mean by most "western" countries but formality on how you address people you don't know and depending on their age had hierarchy as well. i was born and raised in a german speaking country and virtually across all of them you address people you don't know as "Sie" formally and even elder people you know well too (instead of the informal "du"). this has worn off a bit nowadays compared to before but even the whole eastern block of europe has this formal addressing and tonality of how you do it towards strangers and specifcally elders. i think the english speaking nations such as USA, UK and Aus give off this vibe that it is the same within most western nations but that's not the case at all. go look up different formalities within german and slavic speaking countries (perhaps greece, italy and spain as well but i have no idea about them) and you'll learn very quickly that the view you have isn't correct. as i've said, german speaking countries are quite formal, polish and other slavic speaking countries in certain cases even more so, as you use formals that are gender and age specific and some people will take offense if you don't do that. in germany as example you also keep work and private life seperate, which is also a formal thing... i could go on for days, but as i've said, it has worn off a bit and it keeps doing so, and I believe that's modernism and is happening everywhere around the world, slowly but surely. cheers
There is no one "Asian culture" you dingleberry
@slXD100 Thanks for the detailed response. However, I was already aware of the German language and customs that you have discussed, since I studied German language at school, and have some German friends and part German family. Moreover, I have worked under a German boss for 7 years and have travelled to Germany and Switzerland for work. However, I still maintain the same stance that Asian countries like Japan and Korea still have more formally hierarchical cultures than nations like Germany and Switzerland.
Crouching White man, hidden Asian😂😂😂😂😂😂
Hidden nah was so obvious but his safeguard was his fluent language skills 😂
If they included some people with Russian, Arabic or Persian background it would have been a lot harder, but as Preach said, I guess Americans do not consider certain countries as Asian.

Bilingual means he only speaks 2 languages. Polyglot is correct term
Laoshu50500 rest in peace.

Who's that?
Xiaomao can speak not only Mandarin in perfect Beijing dialect, but also, Cantonese, Fujineese... Etc
You can call me a hater for saying this, but as a Cantonese speaker, none of the other language videos I've seen of his even comes close to his Mandarin. He's learnt that very well for just a year, props for that, but his Cantonese is very clearly like a Mandarin-speaker knowing a few words and fumbling around the rest. If I didn't have the subtitles or understand some Mandarin, it'd take me a moment to get that he was even attempting Cantonese. He has the grammar since he knows "Chinese" but it's just a weird, "cantonised" Mandarin. All due respect for nailing the Mandarin pronunciation way better than most, but I personally wouldn't be claiming I could speak Cantonese with what I've hear from him.
😂
@@drunkenturkey i thought he's one of those language youtubers who "claim" to know many languages or imply they do, meanwhile the vast majority of the languages they pretend to speak well are just very well memorized basics/sentences so it comes across that way
Nah, like most of these self proclaimed polyglots he too only speaks a few memorized basic sentences in every language he "speaks". Plus, he has a horrible accent while doing so lol. The only people who are impressed by him are typical Americans who barely speak English so a single word in any other language to them means that person is "fluent" in that language. Like Karens who never fail to proudly say "Gracias!" when leaving a Mexican restaurant lmfao. I want to see him in an hour long debate about climate change, vaccines, social media or anything else with native speakers of any of the languages he supposedly speaks and you will see then how much he really doesn't know. 😁

Damn near every Chinese restaurant in Southern California is bad. One of the tricks they do is put the business in one name and when they go bust for health reasons, they put it in another associates name, change the name, then keep the party going. And out of all the Chinese employees, you know they foul when you don't see them eat what they cook. Huge red flag.
Same with Kurdish and other Mediterraneans, they'll do it in Europe especially UK, also for Tax Evasion reasons. All these restaurants use MSG, turns any Slop meal into a gourmet dish lol
If they served the dishes they would eat, Americans wouldn’t eat it.

I’m actually kind of the opposite of Aba. To me, there is definitely a “hierarchy” of sorts when it comes to people I find attractive. That’s simply because certain traits are more prevalent in certain ethnicities. So, I’m more confused by the people who don’t understand or find it weird. There are definitely attractive people in every ethnicity, so it would never be group in with “I won’t date you” criteria, but preferentially, there are more in some than others lol.

Isnt "Asian" literally just Pakistani? I dont live in the UK so i probably am talking out of my arse
In the US, “Asian” was a term made up to gain civil rights and equal protection of under the law. Each individual nationality didn’t have enough power on their own to change things, so Indians, Koreans, Chinese, Filipino, Vietnamese, etc all came together under “Asian.” The case of Vincent Chin was really the turning point in the US.

But here is the solution I found: I bought the best round-bottom wok I could find, and a rounded induction plate (from a restaurant supplier I found online, it's high wquality stuff, not a cheap amazon thing), and I learnt how to make asian food at home. Took a few weeks to get the hang of it, but now even my favourite chinese restaurants pale in comparaison to my own. I just have a more limited recipe selection at home, cause I can't have all the ingredients, my pantry isn't big enough and they would go bad before I have time to cook them.

@@zkart8038 I said he speaks them, I didnt say he was fluent. Your point still stands though.
@@shandorunia you don't speak a language unless you're fluent. Considering someone who only knows small talks as "speaking a language" is not accurate.
@@zkart8038 Your arguing over perspective . You are entitled to your opinion and I respect that but trying to be like this in a youtube comment just makes me think your an arsehole. I don't care what you think is speaking a language. I think being able to talk small talk in a way that the other person can understand is speaking the language but not fluently. I am also entitled to think that way since that is my perspective.
Move on.
@zkart8038 I would actually agree with shandorunia.
If you speak a language well enough, that you can get through the day, interacting with various people in only that language, then you speak that language.
I know many people that speak English and would claim so themselves. Are they fluent in it and know all the vocabulary? Nope.
Could they easily live in the UK regardless and get by with hardly any problems? Yep, absolutely.
7:15 In China there's garbage food that even Chinese people wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. But someone'll be like, "go sell it in America, they'll eat it!"
Guokiu 😂 that beef mince crispy fried 2元 Street food pastry
quite a lot of food in china is cooked using sewer oil. which is oil they literally get out of the sewer where all the shit and piss and rats are.
the only thing more disgusting than that is the pagpag in philippine. where they get food out of dumpsters and fry it up. but there is nothing anywhere near this disgusting in america
Y'all funny asf! Love channels like this that add to the videos in such an entertaining way 😄
I'm such a fan oh Xiaomaonyc's chanel. He inspires me so much to learn new languages. Props to him for all the love he shows to different cultures.
In the UK, when people say Asian, they think about Indians, kinda like how in the US, they think about East Asians like Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, and Mongolians
3:49 Preach is WRONG, Asian is defined by who-ever is the majority Asian in you're country, in North America East and South East Asians are the majority so they get to own the term Asian in the UK South Asians (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) are the majority so they own the term Asian, while an East Asian would be referred to as oriental.
@@Theon435 He never said they were not asian, but a lot of asians dont consider them asians, because to them being asian is being more "chinese/korean/japanese" not indian.

Eyyyy the Dynasty Warriors reference on point ^
I get that "Prove your asian" thing. I lived with ADHD, Autism and PTSD from 12 to today. Proving your the "average" to fit in isn't easy. I've learned to mask while i'm around non-familar people like at work or on the bus, but it's incredibly draining doing it long term.

Lmao... This is absolutely correct ... The more truth entwined the stronger the lie is, and the easier it is to keep up the lie.
I haven't ever said it to anyone because... Of exactly how you're co host responded lol
That dude is ace, I love it when he goes to restaurants surprising folk.
Weird thing about this is Asia is so big and diverse yet I still get put on the same category as a completely different person.
That’s always been my thought process. For example, yeah Indians are technically Asians, and a lot of them will be quick to remind you of that, but the two groups have such a distinct appearance and culture it just feels like a disservice to lump Indians in with Southeast Asians when they are so distinct.

White people don't worry about not being white enough. We actually are more impressed by how much like other races we are; and, how accepted we are by those cultures.

I call it bullshit, white people in the USA means being Anglo, or English or Irish, or Scandinavian. But anything Spanish or Italian sometimes get considered not white enough when they are literally white.
I don't know whom you consider as white, but Slavs did suffer a lot by the fact that we were considered less-white or non-white. Millions of casualties only during WWII.
it's because people grow up watching media with people who look like them so when they see different races, it's like a peak of curiosity
