    For those who say "IQ is useless, it doesn't measure anything". That is incorrect
    Its a strong predictor for success. Income, health, longevity and educational level. And a plethora of studies have replicated this result to varying degrees. The only people rail so hard against it is this new age "it's oppressive" BS narrative.
    IQ has value, maybe not as much as ppl think, but certainly not as little as it's detractors make it out to seem.

The military has to operate even in these conditions. These guys are subject matter experts and know how to properly detect (CBRN) threats and protect personnel through active training and management in these scenarios. Just watch videos on people affected by nerve agents or nuclear radiation and you'll see the importance of having them around.

So as soon as I heard that was his specialty, I knew he was going to score very high one the IQ test.

    • @CrimsonUltrafox
      @CrimsonUltrafox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      Yeah, to get a job like that, you need at least a 90 on the Asvab. I'm a former 0311 which is an infantry rifleman. You can get my occupation with a 30 something on the asvab. Smartest guy I ever met in the military was an Air Force guy who was a 9S100 (Science application specialist). This guy worked on nuclear weapons and made a 99 on his Asvab. He also confirmed that he had a 160 IQ from a test he took and I legit believed him because he also had a photographic memory and remembered EVERYTHING.

      The highest ASVAB score that a candidate can achieve is 99.
      However, this is almost impossible to achieve given the sheer difficulty of the ASVAB exam. Top-performing candidates often achieve a score well into the 70s with only a small minority achieving scores in either the 80s or 90s.
      Given the minimum ASVAB scores - which fall into the 30s - it is not necessary to achieve a score of 99. Most candidates who score well into the 60s can safely assume to have done well and will be in with a high chance of being selected to enlist in the US military.

      Besides, majority of the choices that you make have an influence on you weither you're aware or not.

In this case here, your "general intelligence", Common sense, innovative or simply being creative.
      If almost every single person can be creative in certain ways, then everyone can be considered intelligent by default. The only reasons we compare each other is because 1. We're unaware of our perception (beliefs) and 2. We compete with each other inorder to dominate our environment/survive.

      Nah "really sever dyslexia" which I straight up disbelieve because that prevents most moderatly dyslexic people from going to college, nevermind getting a degree.
      Unless she wants to aknowledge her privilege of being one of the rare few to be able to get a lot of expensive software, technology & extra help, private tutors etc to help her catch up to her peers?
      The symptoms of dyslexia don't impact on IQ tests nearly as much as standardised testing in educational settings.
      My main drawback was/is working memory but apart from reading comprehension of the questions, dyslexia barely impacts IQ tests, in fact we usually have better visual & reasoning skills, so tend to perform above average in those type of alternative tests. Obviously if I wasn't dyslexic my IQ test result would be higher but it doesn't magically make me look like a dunce!
      As you say they seem more bothered by appearance & ego rather than actual facts & logic. Which is ironic really considering the focus of this video. @Brian Takam Yeah, of course I'm making assumptions. I am 100% assuming intentions. I'm reading her body language and using my own common sense and experience to judge her words and actions. I could very well be wrong; maybe she just has terrible body language and mannerisms and I'm reading her the opposite of the way she really is. I never called her a snake, I just said she was doing the socially acceptable thing. I also don't know what you're referring to when you say "the criteria of Tyler's own test." Are you talking about how he didn't know anything about IQ tests? Because that's a matter of knowledge, not of intelligence. Or are you talking about the ASVAB? I don't understand what you mean if that's the case. He got an outstanding score on that test and understands exactly what it is. To be clear, people don't dislike Maria for her "confidence," they dislike her for discounting Tyler for shallow reasons.

Doesn't take it hard (or to heart) when others rank him last and doesn't get inflated or lord it over others when he's ranked higher. From what I can see, he knows who he is, has a fair estimation of his abilities, and isn't unduly swayed by the opinions of others or the results of the test.

To say that "emotional intelligence, street smarts, and IQ combine to determine intelligence" is just a misunderstanding of the basic definition of intelligence, and I'm glad the girl with the PhD got last. I really loved how you emphasized how the military gives you so much transferable training that can make you formidable in the civilian world and how much it helps with problem-solving skills. I was a US Army Combat Medic, and afterwards I used my Army scholarships to study Registered Nursing up to Bachelor level, and I didn't learn a single thing in my college studies that I hadn't already learned and faced head-on on the military side. When we'd do out practice at the hospital, I would be so much more confident and quuick-thinking than my peers cause I had already faced multiple scenarios where I had critical care patients in a high-stress environment, far beyond the level of stuff you'dd see in the civilian world short of a mass-casualty scenario like, say, a gas explosion, massive car crash or mass shooting. I felt REALLY bad for how they piled on the military dude, and it was especially unfair cause he was right out of high school! He was the baby of the group, even if he were going to college he'd still be below all of them education-wise! And yet, the way he described IQ was the most spot-on of everyone there, and he felt to me like the most reliable one in terms of him knowing what to do in an emergency situation, which is the ultimate measure of IQ and problem solving, IMHO.

      As a side note I have heard EQ used scientifically to describe general intelligence of different species in a study which analyzed brain size to body ratio. Not sure if it's established, however. It stands for encephalization quotient (EQ) and can be discovered by searching for crows.

    As a veteran I had experiences where I've been judged while in college by some who believe that if you join it's because you weren't smart enough to do anything else. But what they fail to realize is that we have doctors, enginners, pilots, cybersecurity, intelligence, and so many other positions that take years to learn and unless you go officer you're learning it in a fraction of the time. We can adapt to any situation and in any environment while having the most stressful job in America. When we go to college while we're in we doing 8 week semesters instead of the average 16 which means most of us are doing 6 classes per semester while working 8 to 12 hour days. So the next time you say or hear someone comment that the military is for people who were too stupid to do something else, just remember this.

If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. EQ is not a thing. There's intelligence and then there's an aptitude for a skill.
      What some call EQ is the skill at interpersonal interaction, be it the ability to read other people or to manipulate them. As with any skill, intelligence helps but it is not the most important quality. Aptitude and experience is much more important.
      The reason why intelligence is so impactful is because intelligence is universally useful.

    I was a Marine Infantryman, people think Grunts are dumb, but we have to call for fire, look at the battlefield see what is going on and adjust our attack accordingly all while getting shot at. I was in charge of 48 Marines, their training, in charge of million dollars of equipment, know how to call evacs, call for air support, naval gunfire and artillery. I got out after 10 years and went and got my Associates in Psychology. I am not a genius, but I know a damn piece of paper doesn't make a person intelligent.

    • @GTRNights
      @GTRNights 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      No, it certainly doesn't. I am an Army veteran. 3 Corp Arty, 1st ID, and a SOG. I got out, used my GI Bill to get an Associates and Bachelors. I didn't have a choice because it's required for just entry-level for my job. Even back during my Associates there were classes I was in where we would start with 12-15 students and by the last week of class I was the only one left in the class. That happened 3 times just during that degree. People fell out left and right because they couldn't cut it. One guy even came into class bragging that he used to work at his dad's IT shop during the summer, so that already made him an expert. Dude didn't even make it halfway through the class. Some were kicked out for trying to cheat, or convince other students to give them answers. I saw two kicked out for plagiarism.
      Now, 7 years later, I'm a Director and make over 170k a year. There are very few people who can do what I do and that's why the pay is so high. The highest position you can get in my field, the top 10% make 330k a year base salary. That doesn't include positions as board member or the millions that come with selling stock options.
      No, the piece of paper didn't make me, but it enabled me. I personally think people who say education is "just a piece of paper" are more out of touch than the people who think that degree makes them smart. Without that degree, I wouldn't be where I am or have the potential I have. So maybe it isn't what makes me "smart" but just like any smart person they will use the tools at their disposal to great benefit. That's true intelligence.

I know how much a diploma means. I am from Harlan County, Kentucky. Way back in the mountains. My grandparents only were able to get a first grade education. My papaw couldn't even spell his own name. But he had common sense and could make anything work, and was intrigued by everything, so he would work on whatever he wanted to know about until he got it figured out. Both my Grandmothers, went back to school at the ages of 68 and 69 and didn't get their GED, they did the entire process and got their High School Diploma. Education is important, but it doesnt make the man in my book.
