Kaldheim captured my imagination like no other plane since Theros. I bought my first magic cards in many years just to marvel at those beautiful images and stories. It even got me to read the Poetic Edda and explore norse language and myth (thanks dr. Crawford). Truly a special place. Mortality is scary, especially when you don't believe in an after-life. The panic and soul-crippling terror when you realize you could go to sleep and then never wake up again, completely ceasing to exist... and you wouldn't even know it was your last.

This essay reminds me of a time a few years ago when a younger, more foolish version of me pushed back on the notion that MTG TH-cam could enhance my life. "I already live and breathe this game more than anything else that I experience," I said. "What can ten minute videos on Magic teach me?" It was an early Rhystic Studies video that showed me that while the medium of the video essay was unlikely to enhance my competitive play, it is the perfect vessel for cognitive and emotional bombshells that to this day connect my gaming life to my experience of the world that surrounds it. Rhystic Studies continues to be the only channel capable of making me forget myself completely as I give my ears and mind over to Sam's steady hand, and voice. Kudos, Sam, and thanks. And I hope that now that your formal commitments to academia are in the past, you'll be able to bring even more of that spirit of curiosity and discovery to your writing and video production for Rhystic Studies.

The painting of snow covered mountain reminds me of tragic death of Terje “Valfar” Bakken, the founder of Norwegian black metal band called “Windir” which means “warrior” in one of the Norwegian dialects.
On 14 January 2004 Valfar went for a walk towards his family's cabin at Fagereggi, but he never arrived. Three days later, authorities found his body at Reppastølen in the Sogndal Valley. Valfar had been caught in a snow storm and died from hypothermia.
