  • What is tubing mascara and how is it different to waterproof mascara?
If you don’t want the hassle of waterproof mascara which can be a pain to take off, Tubing mascara might be for you.
What is it? Tubing mascara wraps each lash in water-resistant, tube-like polymers, like a little cap that washes off.
    Benefits of tubing mascara -
Easy removal - Only need warm water to wash off.
Less scrubbing and washing, therefore less irritation on eyes.
Good for contact lens wearers as no fall out
Perfect for holidays as it doesn’t come off when you swim, water-resistant to cold water, but not to warm, hence the easy removal.
    Good for sensitive eyes
    No racoon eyes throughout day.

LOVE tubing mascaras - total unsung beauty heroes! I think I just have an oily lids, eye area because I always smudge with regular mascara. Long time fan of Clinique Lash Power, but most recent fave is Hourglass Unlocked, which has a thicker formula and gives more glam ♥️ It also comes off a tad easier than the Clinique.

I’ve been using the Boots No. 7 Stay Perfect tubing mascara for years. My lashes are a bit ‘gappy’ and ordinary mascara can clump them together and emphasise the gaps. As you say, tubing mascara doesn’t give volume but it does give definition and looks natural.

Thank you Caroline for sharing your favorite tubing mascaras. All of a sudden I've been blessed with seasonal allergies and I find regular mascara extremely irritating. Plus as I have gotten older I'm fortunate to have long ladhes, but my eyes are hooded and I always end up with raccoon eyes. Thank for this - I am always looking for another great tubing mascara. My lash routine - my lashes point down, as straight as they come and stubbornly do not hold a curl UNITL. I curl them using the KA curler (I have swapped out the curler as I feel my lashes 'adapt' to a curler and it is no longer effective!?) then use a very light coat of waterproof mascara to hold that initial curl. Wait for it to dry. Then use a tubing mascara (here in Australia we have some very good brands like Mirenesse and Eye of Horus). Then wait for the coats to dry then use a heated eyelash curler on the lashes and viola the curl is held all day. No smudges and lovely curl until I take it off. Also, a tip if the mascara goes dry - sit the tube in a little warm water to 'melt' the mascara again and you will have quite a few more uses. Yup the things I do for a curl!😂 The KA mascara is on my list now too!!

Love tubing mascaras having just discovered them this year! So far I’ve enjoyed a couple drugstore brands here in the states…the No7 Stay Perfect {similar to the hourglass}, and if I want vavoom lashes, I go for the L’Oréal Double Extend. The double extend isn’t as pretty up close…can look ‘flocked’ but sometimes I like that look for fancy days 😁 I prefer a natural, long and defined look most days as a 55 year old gal.

Ever since your video about the best mascara for different purposes, I have been using Maybelline Snapscara in water resistant. I googled tubing mascaras, and found a recent review list that gave several options. I went through several tubing mascaras and found two that don't flake on me - that one and Thrive Causemetics. True that makeup remover isn't the way to remove these, but it is hard to remove the bits of tubes that fall off. I use Clinique balm to gently loosen, remove, and wash away the mascara.
You made such a difference in my makeup with that video. Thank you for revisiting this.

However, I generally do use two mascaras: the new MAC Stack on my top lashes, Hourglass on the bottom and THEN when I’ve got my top lashes exactly how I want them and they are dry, a final thin coat of Hourglass on the top lashes. I love tubing mascara and it has enabled me to wear mascara daily and not have it all down my face, I agree with what you said about it being to do with your specific lashes, mine are reasonably long (and fine) which is why I think they rub on my under eye.
I also hate clumpy lashes so the natural glossy lash look of tubing is nice. That comb looks great and I might get one for when I want to wear a thicker mascara for night times!
I never wear under eye mascara, (even with tubing) as they are also long & fine and I think it just looks a bit mad- spider legs!
I use the Boots stay perfect Tubing mascara as it works and is easy to come by. (In new packaging which is a bitt boring looking unfortunately)

Tubing mascaras are life! I have ultra sensitive eyes and scrubbing off mascaras at night or having them flake into my eyes had so irritated my eyes I had completely stopped wearing mascara until I discovered tubing mascaras. They are generally more discreet than the super volumizing formulas though I’ve heard the Thrive Causemetics one is more dramatic. I really hate the look of spidery lashes that result from trying to build up tubing mascaras so when I want more dramatic lashes, like for a wedding or something, I use Lashify or other diy extensions as they don’t irritate my eyes much.

Love your work on youtube, Caroline Barnes. You are very intelligent and funny, warm, and real. That's not empty flattery, I don't like flattering people. Just how I feel. But all that aside, yes, I need tubing mascara and at 65 never realized it, despite wearing some make-up, for most of the years between 14 and 65.
I went through a no make-up at all radical phase where it was considered quite the feminist sin to wear any, and when I got with my 2nd partner in crime legally, he hated make-up, still does after decades of marriage, but at about age 33 I heard two Buddhist male monks talking in a public lecture and they used as an example making an example they thought amusing and clever of a woman they saw on an airplane putting on make-up as if she were the height of human ignorance and silliness, etc. Anyway, it pissed me off something terrible as I was fed up with women being made a joke of because we simply do what we have been conditioned and taught to do, and basically having "typical or conventional" feminine----so-called, in our culture and time anyway----attributes or styles. Really made me think and reflect, and I decided in truth I really liked putting on a moderate amount of make-up, sometimes a clearly "Wearing Make-up" look, and was considered when young, beautiful in a very female way.
Long story short, I don't think wearing make-up is a feminist sin or a sign of low intelligence or lack of spirituality/psychological depth. To look more male didn't interest me though I could care less if another born female or not female wishes to look what is "male" in our era. Who cares? Care about violence, war, pollution, saving all creatures great and small and all manner of living things on earth and in sea and air. Care about air quality and care about being kind and thoughtful to all people, regardless of status, gender, dress style, accent, and all manner of details about people which are in a basic way not harming anyone but just following their taste and personality.
Why am I writing so much to you? And anyone else who reads this? Because millions of people around the globe, and including very much so, in the UK and other Westen nations, are tragically discriminated against, and violently attacked physically, mentally, and emotionally by others in society simply because, for example, thy were born with a brain that is set to absorb the conditioning and ways of the opposite sex to the sex organs they were born with. Or their skin colour is not a skin colour we like, that we in fact fear and hate. Or because they are a woman and not a man.
To further make the point: A transgender person isn't making a lifestyle choice (unless like many they are scared to come out as they feel and can hide it for a lifetime from absolutely everybody) and desperately unfortunately is living and enduring in a time when governments and social institutions of all kinds that make-up the structure of our society, and OMG social media and newspapers gang up and rant against trans people, railing and making abusively using their influence to hurt the idea of transgender as a way of being a certain minority of humans has always been, and carrying the weight of their group being loathed even by many other LGBQ people. Thus----Leading to much higher than the average population rates of suicide, suicide attempts, un- or underemployment, and a general public that feels free to make fun of them in a nasty sort of way, even on TV and comedy shows and governmental speeches where it is certain they could not make similar derogatory supposedly amusing remarks about people of colour, for instance, and other minority groups which have fought for and achieved some degree of social and legal safety.
The upshot is, dear Caroline or anyone who has actually read my unintended, untwitterlike remarks here, that I find make-up a pleasure, and know that some people of my political/social leanings believe it marks me as a dumbo or not a free-thinker, intellectual or even moderately intelligent woman. But it's no more wasteful or useless than the trappings of say, sports, computer devices, just about anything in society that is of material substance.
So I adore you, Caroline, for your passion in being a make-up artist, and your desire to generously communicate with others how to use make-up in ways that truly help and spark the imagination. You are a STAR!!!!! BUT -----guess what. This all started out with me wondering, really wondering, if I can buy a green shirt just like the one you are wearing or is it a one-off. Because I find it looks beautiful on you (anything would), and that is my colour and style too. Please tell me! And forgive me, but it is the time of the year when we as free people (supposedly?) are meant to show PRIDE in our LMGTQIplus neighbors, children, friends, colleagues, leaders, baristas, etc. And I just read that 2 people were violently attacked and murdered for being gay in Norway. Come on, world. Wake-up. Fight against what matters. Not a little lippy to enhance someone's sense of okayness, but murdering or verbally attacking a stranger because we don't like their style? Love and grooming are not crimes in law or in what is considered humane behaviour. Murder, and harassment that leads all too many decent but "diverse" persons to suicide ARE.
Whoa, time to actually finish my skincare!!!!!!

Great video, Caroline. I actually find the opposite - Mac still smudges on me a little but it’s easy to get off and Clinique doesn’t budge so it’s more difficult to remove, I also find it a bit too thick. Really want to try the Kevin A mascara next 😊

I'm 40 but my skin is still so oily, you'd think it would've dried out a bit by this age...! In any case, I swear by tubing mascara for my oily eyelids. My favourite is Hourglass Unlocked, it gives volume, lift and tubing for smudge free wear. Second place is Kevin Aucoin the Volume. Only cos it gives less lift and volume but it does stay put no smudging, but i find the wand dries out within a few months. Whereas the hourglass wand stays good for 12 months plus...

Hourglass Unlocked is my favourite mascara ever. I always use the Max Factor blue lash primer underneath for a bit of volume. Otherwise Boots No7 Stay Perfect Mascara does not budge and it's great as a top coat over other mascaras if you want more volume as it is a bit spiky.

Been wearing Trish McEvoy’s tubing mascara since it came out, YEEEEARS ago. I alternate between it and the one by hourglass. They are the only tubing that doesn’t give me shadows around my eyes

I had a really weird experience with the Kevyn Aucoin Curling mascara (which is also a tubing mascara) - unfortunately at my daughter’s wedding. It was summer, and I got very hot and sweaty, when a woman said, “What is all over your face?” It looked like I had tiny spider legs all over my face from the tubes just falling off of my lashes! I was very disappointed in the performance and quite mortified! *TOTALLY agree with you about the Charlotte Tilbury trajectory. And add MERIT tubing mascara to your list!

I could never understand why women don't like the peach fuzz on their faces. It so inconspicuous and soft. As long as they're not black hairs, I would leave it. If I'm not mistaken, and please correct me if I'm wrong, shaving just stimulates hair growth and then you're stuck shaving your face for the rest of your life!

Hi Caroline, Love you green top!! I've really been loving green lately. Has CT sold her company? she still seems tobe doing advertising for it. Its not the same when that happens, because you tend to think, the products, are not her ideas 😕 but someone else's, therefore they won't reflect her style? However the bronzer looks lovely. xx

I think tubing mascara is what I've been searching for. I like a natural look but mascaras typically bother my eyes, I end up rubbing them, and BAM 🦝! Not good 😅 also trying the rose Inc serum foundation. It is so stupid hot here in the southern US... Most foundation melts off.

Thank you for this, I will definitely try one of the tubing mascaras. On a different note, you mentioned at the beginning of the video about dermaplaning. Can I ask how often do you do it and does the hair grow back more after doing it. I have some peach fuzz on my face, but am apprehensive about doing anything to it. What tool do you use? Thanks 😊

Mac extended play perm me up lash. I have dead straight lashes, have to curl them before mascara and this mascara is one of the few that holds the curl and doesn't give me raccoon eyes. Big downside is Mac are not cruelty free unfortunately.

Thank you for this video, I suffer with the panda eyes from certain mascaras and it never occurred to me to use a tubing one on the bottom lashes. Question on the charlotte tibury bronzer, do you feel this needs to be set with a light dusting from a powder bronzer? Also would the Daniel sandler watercolour blush go well with this in term of texture?
