@@elizabeth_grant You are good. Aesthetic sense. High production value. An artist's sensibility which ties into appreciating the aesthetic of fine watches. People watch a video like yours and take its production value for granted because many videos produced to the public are professionally created. The person in the video isn't the editor. To do it all...respect. Hard work and time consuming.

Your watch looks new because it’s been well serviced. It has a Swiss made service dial which is a replacement for the Tritium dial it originally came with. You can tell service dials because of the half size markers at 28,29,31,32. The bezel is also a service replacement because it does not have a flat 4 at 40 and usually when a service dial is fitted the bezel will be swapped also. This is why the watch appears as new. Lovely piece. Vintage is probably better for you because all of the modern watches with solid bracelets and solid end links are 2x heavier which your unlikely to enjoy. Service a watch like this (as your example has been) and it will outlast you. Superb item.

Yes! I can confirm that these Submariners are tough! They last a lifetime. I bought my submariner when I was 27, I'm now 70. The last service was about 8 years ago and when it came back the accuracy was about +1 per day. It's in excellent condition, there's a scratch or crack at the 10 o clock when I was caring for my mom: when she fell while using her walker, I rushed & managed to grab her before she fell onto the ground - I knocked my wrist (the submariner) against a wall hard. I've other watches so part of the reason for it's good condition is I've usually worn the others. So, have no concerns for anyone who is thinking of getting a submariner.

Agreed you will not find a more robust watch. There is a story about a fisherman that lost his Bluesy sub in the Pacific Ocean. More than one year later it was recovered by a diver. It had barnacles growing on it. Miraculously it was still working and keeping time after a few shakes.

The Two Liner Submariner (16040) is a beautiful watch the dial is clean without to much text on it and the size is just right, it is also a perfect blend between the vintage Submariners and the new Submariners. I have had one since 2014 and have worn it a lot, mine is from 1991. I like vintage Rolex much more than the new stuff.

I have my dad's 1981 day/date President. It still runs about +2 per day. It was his daily wear. It has few nicks and the bracelet is quite "jangly". It doesn't get a lot of wrist time (a bit austentatious for a country parson), but it is a joy to wear. It feels so solid. The 36mm case is perfect and actually helps downplay the gold. Dad's still alive and is glad to know the watch is still being worn. Rolex has s something about it that lies beyond price or status. I hope you find that perfect Rolex.

Elizabeth, the 5 digit subs and all other Rolex models (typically those made prior to 2009 or 2010) are a sweet spot for me as well. Currently I believe they are the best models in terms of looks and wearability from the GMT Master II, to the Sub Date, to the Explorer II. I have an approx 7 inch oval shaped wrist and the new ones are a little ungainly on my wrist. Still I own some of the new ones because they're beauties as well. But I find myself wearing them less and less. As usual your assessment is right on. I'd love to see you get your hands on more and more Rolex models to see if your observations are consistently parallel to my own.

Pre-ceramic neo vintage Rolex also represents comparatively good value. Especially the 14060 models. These weren't affected by the over hyped prices of the newer models.

You won't regret picking up a 16710. Best daily wear watch on the planet. They only got bigger and heavier and harder to wear after that. And more flashy. Whether that's "better" is highly debatable. Plus 5 digit Rolex work on a NATO or leather. The new stuff absolutely does not. 6 digit stuff looks ungainly on anything other than the bracelet

If you service and take good care of any watch, it will last a lifetime. I’m 60 years old. On my wrist right now is a 1982 Seiko 7A28 speed timer. It’s been serviced twice and had the gasket replaced. I bought it new when I was 19. It’s still beautiful and looks like I bought it last year. If you take care of your passion, it will be with you as long as you’d like it to be.

I am saving up for a 124060 sub. The main reason for going for the newest Sub is mainly that I want a Submariner that only I have worn, but also because of the technical specifications.
I tried on a red Submariner in a store, and I really liked it. Older Subs have a certain undeniable functional charm, but I definately prefer the modern more reliable bracelet.

Nice to hear a fresh prospective. To date the watch you don't need to remove the case back, remove the bracelet, the serial & model number will be stamped between the lugs. 14060 used letter codes that you can look up which year they are associated. Keeping in mind, back in the 90's these could have been manufactured years before actually being sold. I have this reference, a year 2000

Excellent video. I'm not sure about the Omega, mine isn't old either but taken care of correctly, the Grand Seiko will definitely look just as good. I have an heirloom from my grandfather, a 1967 GS 6146-8000 hi-beat with gold cap finish. 56 years old! He told me he only wore it for weddings and funerals! He left it to me and it's absolutely scratch free and works perfectly. I had it serviced a while ago and the Seiko service guy said it was incredibly good for its age. I heard that 36,000 of them were produced to match the bph, but I'm not totally sure of that. I follow the tradition and only wear it for weddings, but not funerals. Lol. I'm not sure of the value of a pristine one like this but I do keep it in a bank deposit box for safekeeping. I suppose any quality watch you take care of can look good in 100 years!

Im not coz in all my heart which is full of love to watches, with all of it, I hate this brand for marketing reasons, and coz people that buys them, do it just to flex. Rolex in my eyes is just a synonim of missing taste and is really good in it. For me whole package is really important, and I cant be happy with something that's have no respect to me , just cant let it be. And with Rolex I have this filling. I can easy buy one in aftermarket for triple price , but I have my watch love and want it to work in two directions. Lucky me there is many brands that are happy to see my money.

And personally I love the older lighter bracelets. They are still 10x tougher than my arm, why do I need a heavier modern bracelet that is 20x tougher? Especially since that added weight means it NEEDS glidelock to stay comfortably in place. Heavier does not = better. These old partially hollow bracelets were good enough to be people's war watches. They're good enough for my desk diving haha

The only things on the grand seiko and your omega that won't hold up like the Sub is the crystal, both crystals have AR coating, Rolex doesn't use it. So conceivably the AR coating could flake, however changing a crystal is more or less child's play. Omega also uses gold indices in most models and your 9F grand seiko movement is hermetically sealed and has a silly 50+ year service interval.

I thought only the Submariner now has ar coating underneath the crystal? I'm used to seeing most of their models without it, which always made the dial look really cloudy and I hated it. If they finally put ar on the underside then that's a huge change.

Fun vid! It's a truly great watch. I have a Sub Ref. 5513 that has a plexiglass bezel and is about the same age as me (55). I bought it a few years after starting and surviving in my first business about 30 years ago. I have enjoyed it ever since.

I think this video hits upon a theme that's becoming more and more apparent over time; that there's an era of watches (let's broadly call it "the 90s"), where watches were modernised to a degree that today's wearers can appreciate what they offer... yet they aren't the kind of all singing, all dancing models of today. They feel like classic cars that have been updated with some modern conveniences. People are starting to see this more and more with the Omega Seamaster 2531.80.00, for example. Great watch, but smaller than many modern Seamasters, and with a movement that's easy for any watchmaker to work on. So it feels classic, but looks great on wrist in 2023. And there are other watches with that vibe. This Rolex being one of them.

My seamaster is the last one right before they switched to the full inhouse 8800 coaxial movement. So the last seamaster with the 2500. Mine is like 1mm smaller and slightly thinner but wears worlds better.

    Here are some giveaways:
    - 1999/2000 had a "swiss" only dials, this one is "swiss made"
    - 2003 got ride of the lug holes on the side of the case
    - If you remove the bracelet and look at the first letter of the serial number it'll probaby say K or Y. K for 2000/2001 and Y for 2002!

Get one like mine. A 14060m from 2006. The movement is 3130. I still wear it and it truly is a work horse. The 2006 is the last bit with 2 lines and not 4 lines of text. It also does it have the signed Renault which I like better. The signed rehabilitation always makes me think of an Invicta. The 2 liners for 06 have the same movement as the maxi case and although it COSC certified I can tell you it would pass easy. In any case I bought mine in 06 and glad I still have it and wear it. Best of luck to you in your watch journey.

Absolutely bonkers editing, congratulations. And you're so right about the size and proportions; much better than the maxi cases; nice and dainty, but still tough, indestructible. Love the simplicity. I'm wondering if a 14060 might suit you more than a 114270. If you like the vintage vibe, why not look at the 16570 too, the old Polar Exp II that has just the same dimensions? If I lived nearby I'd loan you mine just to see what synaesthetic confection you'd conjure up, but I'm in the UK, so quite impossible alas. Finally, I dig the cricket jumper you're rocking but don't recognise the club?

This is an $800 tool watch with a huge markup for Luxury Branding and subsequent Veblen Good status. I have owned a few through the years and that era always felt tinny and cheap due to the clasp. As i bought and sold and traded many watches, I am now in my 50s and look past the branding to see that Rolex are just another stainless steel tool watch. My higher end Seikos and COSC Ball Engineer Hydrocarbon chronograph are just as nice as the older Rolex and Omegas I owned. The newer Rolex clasp and bezels are a nice upgrade, but there are many other watch companies making great watches that match quality but not the prestige.
But I will concede that the price you pay for a Rolex IS WORTH THE PRICE from a resale perspective if you can get it for MSRP. I never lost a dime on any I sold, but the markups today on secondary market are insane.

My personal opinion on Rolex is that they are overpriced and over hyped. Yes, they're a good watch, but I think they lack something. I actually own one but can't wear it. It has a 32mm case in rose gold with a lighter gold dial. My Grear great grandfather gave it to my great grandmother on the 20th of June of 1930. I know that because it's engraved on the back. I have to admit that it is special because it is a Rolex, but what truly makes it special is how it makes me feel connected to these two people. That is what is magic about watches, and I'm sure, for your friend, The thing that makes it special for her is that connection it will always have to a great man in her life.

Good morning Elle - really good to see you back on-line and your take on this classic Rolex was very informative (as always) and entertaining. It is really fun to see your passion for watches (and life) come thru in your videos and it makes me smile. Love this Rolex and the few Rolex watches I own are a bit obscure but so very cool..... A Turn-O-Graph (just so cool) - an Oyster Quartz (two tone) and an Oyster Perpetual with Arabic numbers (my poor man's Explorer) - the "new stuff" just does not do it for me. Anyway - I REALLY hope your buddy will sell you this watch someday as you would really honor the memory of her dearly departed relative. Good work on the short vid on Longines also - hard to understand why that Brand is not more popular... I actually bought the no-date Legend Diver that TGV reviewed on his channel..... Yeah - I didn't "over-pay" for that one at all..... Keep up the good work - not surprising the Gringa is a fan... You - she and Jenni are all just class acts and way better than most of the guys.....
