Very good video. But I noticed that you don't wear protective glasses when cutting and filing the materials. I don't want to nitpick, but it's dangerous to work without personal protective equipment.
Das Messer taugt höchstens als Brieföffner. Er verwendet zum Herstellen der Klinge Bewehrungsstahl, also St 37. Dieser Stahl ist sehr flexibel, da er im Stahlbeton entstehende Zugkräfte aufnehmen soll. Er weist aber einen sehr niedrigen Kohlenstoffgehalt auf. Der ist aber wichtig, um Stahl überhaupt härten zu können. Beim Säureätzen sieht man sehr gut, dass kein härtbarer Stahl da ist, der würde sich nämlich sehr dunkel färben. Die Idee mit dem Torsionsdamast ist sicher gut gemeint, funktioniert aber nur bei der Verwendung von verschiedenen Stählen, was ja eigentlich der Sinn von Damaszener Stahl ist. Der Griff ist Geschmackssache. Dass er die Klinge aus dem Stahl schneidet und nicht direkt die Form schmiedet, finde ich persönlich überhaupt nicht schlimm. Schließlich ist ja im Videotitel von der Herstellung eines Messer die Rede und nicht direkt vom Schmieden. Und wie heißt es ja so schön: Ad astra per aspera 😉

Ist aber auch das einzige.
Die Klinge ist eher zurecht geschnitten als geschmiedet, finde ich eigentlich schade.
Natürlich ist die Klinge scharf. Fragt sich nur wie lange 🤔
Da dieser Stahl nicht wirklich hoch gradig Härt bar ist, wird die Schärfe nicht lang anhalten 🧐

Rebar is a low carbon steel. If you watch enough of this guy's videos you'll see he uses a lot of junk steel to make knives. He probably had to sharpen it after cutting that banana.....L0L
Lot of work to make a wall hanger. Regards is mild steel ie does not harden only way to successfully use it woul be to San mai with a high carbon core

Not to be a complete naysayer, but I can sharpen a "butter knife" to shaving sharpness... but it won't "hold" the edge because it's inferior steel. You've made a decent knife, but it is made from 'mild steel' with a low carbon content.

A lot of these comments are saying the rebar is low carbon steel. My question to yall is, what is the grade of the rebar he is using? Cause while it is more than likely grade 40, which, let's be honest, it probably is, y'all are correct. What if someone uses grade 60, 80, or 100?

Its borax but please do not learn from this. The amount of shop safety violations are through the roof in this video. Namely the cutting while just holding the material is one of them.

Flux, it helps the steel weld together.
Borax. Laundry detergent aid. It melts on the hot steel to prevent oxides and forge scale from building on welding surfaces

OBS: Este pó sse chama BORAX, este produto é usado na Agricultura como um tipo de adubo pra correção de deficiência deste produto para determinados produtos como por Ex: Brócolis, Em fim , serve para vários seguimentos, OBS: No caso da cutelaria ele tem a função de fundir pedaços de aço entre si ,este processo se chama CALDEAMENTO , na cutelaria é usado pra confecção do aço Damasco, espero ter ajudado a quem possa interessar.

Is it some special type of rebar ? The few times I tried to weld it……it basically just melted away….. And that was with a $60 Hitbox welder. I doubt it is worth a shit unless there is better (higher carbon) quality rebar.

After seeing the steel burned at 5:45, I don't believe for a second you would get any edge retention out of that billet.
Rebar is dead soft steel and can't be hardened😢
Rebar has lots of carbon, you can tell by the spark test, plus the tight mass that is created from all the pounding.
No it has not, this steel is soft and cannot be hardened by quench.
Stop believing your own nonsense, rebar is horrible for a knife. I use 80CRV2, 5160 and 1095. 5160 has been an outstanding steel for me to produce knives and swords. I've have tons of 1095 bar stock because I just don't using it anymore, its never annealed properly from the factory anyway and I have to spend extra time softening it before I do my artisan blade designs. 5160 with its .60% carbon content and low chromium is an outstanding steel as it has many positive perks for do it yourself knife makers wither hammer forging it or stock removal its amazing steel and produces a beautiful fit n finish shine! However I brought in 80CRV2, haven't worked with it yet but excited to see how it performs. I'll do a video soon of some high carbon round bar stock tool steel I found at an old oil well site and spark test it on a low speed belt sander with 80 grit. When you see it you'll be a believer with a super high carbon tool steel spark test. Railroad spikes throw weak and very little because they only have .15-.30 carbon content. Plus a R.R. spike has virtually no stream! I have loads of R.R. spikes some of stamped H.C. On testing "mystery steels" only vanadium, tungsten and manganese turn the stream red. Titanium has a white stream... carbon bursts happen at the end of the stream is what we look for and how powerful are the carbon bursts at the end of the stream. 3rd phase is what happens at the end of the stream. They have to be visually observed also known as carbon explosions. I've actually trained myself to study spark streams and reading the color of the stream and the carbon burst at the end of the stream. its not just the stream you're looking for there's more to it to determine carbon amount. Is it tool steel? alloy steel? or carbon steel. Different elements produce different spark stream colors. We can't know the actual compositions formulas ratios but we can know probability (what kind of steel) mainly what we want is high carbon! You got low carbon---medium carbon and high carbon. In a high carbon rating the amount will be .60 or higher. Medium carbon .30-.55 low carbon .15-.30. in knife making .30 is considered low carbon in the railroad industry they rate spike high carbon if they're .30% spark tests are performed on "mystery steels" and you can see the stream color really good if you do the spark test with low light conditions I prefer early morning is when I do spark test because eye sight is rested and fresh. Of course wear eye protection! Back in the early 1800s men were trained to be low carbon-medium and high carbon spark testers all done by site viewing the spark steams. The metal was then categorized into supplies. If you get high carbon results you'll have a good knife! If you get the heat treat solid that is.
Wrong. Rebar is low carbon and you can tell by all of the large sparks. High carbon produces fewer, smaller bright sparks. Learn so metalurgy
