You seem to be very gifted as a blacksmith with working the metal, but your detail is barely even novice. I think I speak for all the viewers when I say we'd love to see you really finish a project nicely.
you don’t speak for me. i think it’s super cool and it’ll hold up just fine. no one is actually fighting with knives, swords or katanas anymore so what’s to prove ? i guarantee that in a pinch this “katana” will sever any limb but it will look totally awesome and badass sitting on the mantle too.
For the polishing, get a felt wheel for your angle grinder or put a felt wheel on a bench grider with a jig, and use some lard based polish compound. It will save you tons of time and come out a little better.
I made a katana. It took me just over 17 weeks. Did you know, that the bend in the blade is made WHEN you water temp the blade? I don't know what you call that. Maybe knock off. Any stock grinder can make a knock off, but only a skilled craftsman, who loves his craft can make a katana. Knowledge is something you need more of my friend. . A katana is also made with mid grade steel. The spine is soft. No BS. Look it up.
It's called "sori" and it is a consequence of martensite state steel crystals on the edge being larger than the perlite crystals on the rest of the blade.
A katana should be made with Tamahagane which translates to "precious steel" or "purest steel", not "mid grade". and not everyone has that kind of time, instead he made his own variant on the Katana style/shape. Congrats on doing it your way. (genuinely congrats its a hard thing to do) but belittling someone else for doing it differently then you did is kinda shitty. he probably knows all of this and to assume he does/doesnt isnt our job, our job is to watch, maybe give the helpful "tip" here and there.. not call someones hard work a "Knock off."
For the love of God wear some safety glasses, you'll protect your hands but not your eyes, what good are eyes if you can't see to forge, I'm a welder, fitter, machinist and there's no chance I'd go without my PPE!
I’m sorry I died a lot inside watching you do this, you showed 1 fold in the process, you didn’t shape the sword with a hammer you used a grinder to cut the kissaki(tip edge) and then cut the tang instead of shaping it with the hammer and then proceeded to ruin said tang by cutting pointed “v’s” into it which will wreaking it even more than the small little tang you had….. The instead of doing a proper oval shape with some of the wood you have you make a round bamboo handle that is hard to hold on to and will make the blade twist in your hand, and to secure it to the sword you used what looked like jb weld……. I cannot say this was even a 1/10 in work it just wasn’t as good as you could have done.
It's not a katana. it's as simple as that. It simply lacks the parts that are essential for a katana. It is a sharp sword in curved form. A good piece of work for sure, but not a katana
I have just got bk from Japan and have seen the process at a museum There is a reason why they are the greatest swords ever. This is not a katana, but good effort 👍🏻 Folded 10-12 times and tier technique was so so unique
While the stuff you make isn't amazing and exactly on par with professionally made variants with what you make with the things you have and your general knowledge it's not bad, I won't bash on your enjoyment to make these things but there is alot to improve on, I'm all for your evolution process and how you develop your skills along the way 💯
Not really you're thinking of odachi and olanga long katanas. Longer ones are mostly for show the reason odachi and olanga has handles bigger than a forearm.
Blade did not look straight. Cracks were visible on one side of the blade. Not quite the length for a "katana" blade. 6/10 at best, but it'll break eventually. Should've done 1-3 more folds and really worked out those cracks, and should've straightened it before hardening.
Quit thinking odachi and olanga long are common katanas when during the Middle ages they was rare and was used for show with mostly emperor's and nobles carrying them.
@@AlfonzoCam I didn't say it was way off, it was off by only an inch. Besides, it's funny you pick on my length complaint, but fail to see the bigger picture as to really why the sword was weak.

Sorry to say, but that blade is absolutely not a katana. Will need to do a bit more research on it in order to meet the criterias of an actual katana. A katana should be like a piece of art. IMHO the Damascus pattern is there, but not great. The effort is there, but you could do it much better than this. Pay more attention on the details of the katana. Regardless, its a good headstart towards making a great sword. Keep up with the hardwork🍻
That is a not a Katana by any stretch of imagination, and I cannot even call that a well made Machete... fairly sure it would break in at least one if not more points after hitting a hard target several times (if not the user with that round handle). Your video title is some pretty horrible click bait.

A bit primitive, but extremely functional. Much like your forge itself. Love it!
