My favorite Steely Dan song.
Somewhere, Bernard Purdie is smiling.
Same here!
Isn’t that the guy who did all the drumming for the Beatles, or so he thinks?!
This girl truly has a gift. Right up there with the great Jeff Porcaro. Her sense of pocket and groove are SO deep. Im a 68 year old drummer playing since I was 8 on and off over the years and she's definitely an inspiration to me to keep going until I can no longer hold the sticks. Amazing!
This lady is growing up. Showing a more sophisticated style.
I am 70 years old enjoying her very relaxing way of drumming. She brilliant drummer one of the best not only here in Asia but also in south, west and east. hope you all agree.
........... the world!
Agreed 👍🏻
Couldn't agree more. She makes it looks effortless, and though while she nails all the important parts she's not afraid to make it her own as either. On top of it all, she delights in what she's doing, and her joy is infectious.
amazing she's so young wait til she's in her prime at 30-40
Thank you for inviting me YOYOKA. Good with me. Meaning I think YOYOKA is a good human human.
The fact that Yoyoka is systematically performing all of my favorite songs makes me feel vindicated in my personal musical tastes.
she's not only performed most of my musical tastes, she's also introduced me to new tastes.
me too. LOL
😅me three
Make that four. The video of her covering, Anderson .Paak - Put me thru, is insanely good.
Seen this one a couple of times now. You know, people post their drum covers of crazy metalcore and prog songs and such all the time. Sure, It's its own special kind of hard to do. Crazy time signatures, fast rolls, all very cool. But the *real* flex is keeping up that half-time shuffle for 6 minutes. That's what separates the good from the great. This is like a video resume for session work anywhere in the world.
agree on the 6 minute shuffle pulling it off perfectly, not easy, she is perfectly in the pocket, catches a lot of the tiny nuances on the hi hat, accents, opens, snare ghost notes, etc. and she plays the song like the original which is nice to see.
She nails the shuffle, the relaxed yet supertight playing and most importantly: The feel. You can’t play this as it should if you’re not feeling it.
Someone should show this to Donald Fagen; how amazing would it be for Yoyoka to go on tour with Steely Dan to play this in front of huge and adoring audiences around the world? Make it happen, people!!
Well, if Nandi can do it with the Foo's..... 😉
I am SURE he’s seen it
That groove is worth a million dollars.
... And hopefully her agent will make all artists who want to hire her dig deep into their pockets for her talent.
The Purdie Shuffle
I’m glad you have added Steely Dan to your repertoire. Excellent choice and superb cover. 🎉
Please do AJA next!!!
45 years on and Steely D still very much relevant.
Yoyo can drum anything.
Absolutely brilliant and totally subservient to the sound and the groove. Bernard would be proud (& perhaps he is lol). BTW, AJA would be tough for her to do because of all the extended fills, unless she could use a drumless version
I am 63, been drumming since the age of 8, I am not sure if I am loosing my my mind but I have been thru all of the NEXT PHENOM stuff including the Roysters etc . . The NAMM PRODIGIES, however this is by far the BEST that I have EVER had the pleasure of watching and listening to. [FULL STOP]
Dude you read my mind. Her drumming just flows so perfectly.
Wow, I to am 63 drumming since around 8 also. This one has a Supreme gift and groove!
@@johnrelich4785 I'm nowhere near 63. (I'll be 74 next week). And I've never touched a drum. But I fully appreciate YOYOKA.
This young lady is a freaking genius
Genius is such an overused word. Beethoven was a genius. Leonardo was a genius. Don't get me wrong - Yoyoka is clearly a really good drummer. And this is a fantastic cover of one of my favourite bands. But genius it isn't.
I thought he was a dude...
"Genius" applies to creativity itself, rather than to the execution of someone else's work. Yoyoka may well be a genius. But that will be seen in the creation of her own music. What sets Yoyoka apart from so many others is her absolute capture of a musical piece. She gets to a song's soul and exposes it in the best light. Maybe there IS a spark of genius in that! After all, "genius" is inate, too.
Except not playing the track exactly adding a little extra
@jeffcrocker1078 That's by design. She typically sprinkles a little glitter on a piece
Wow! NAILED IT!!!
It's the subtleties and "soft touch" in this song that make it more complex than most drummers perceive. When I did the music thing for 30 years of my life, I found the rarest of commodities was a drummer with finesse who could lay down a texture that flowed withing the music, not over it. There's "playing it" and "playing it right"... a lot of drummers don't realize this; few do (Matt Cameron, Stewart Copeland, Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, etc).
YOYOKA gets it! I've watched her go from a child prodigy kicking Bonham/Zep as a 6-year-old to developing into this musical Godzilla who can play stupid pop songs to ass-kicking rock/metal to complex progressive and jazz... ALL with both authority and skills of someone two or four times her age!
The Purdie shuffle is one of greatest grooves, ever.
In the Classic Albums documentary regarding "AJA", Bernard Purdie demonstrates how he developed this shuffle.
What a groove master !!!
Yoyoka nails this groove with all the precision of her other drum covers.
She doesn't PLAY the rhythm, she IS the rhythm. Must be the magic socks!
Jim Gordon, Jim Keltner, Rick Marotta, Steve Gadd, Bernard Purdie, Jeff Porcaro... and Yoyoka!😊
Let's hope Aja gets covered eventually.Steve Gadd played one of the most famous drum solo's in rock history on that one.
Let’s see… what was I doing when I was 13 years old? Oh.. I was playing Army with little green plastic soldiers burning ants with a magnifying glass. This little girl is so mature and is a genius drummer playing drums in all the big venues! I hope she can continue with her success and not take a wrong turn in life but I know her Mom and Dad have raised her to be a responsible and loving person. ❤❤❤❤
Waooooooooo ! I am a fan of steely dan 😊. This young girl is mindblowing !
Oh Lord, Steely Dan. Our little baby Yoyoka isn't a baby anymore. So pretty, so talented.
So much fun watching her play that if I weren't 69 years old, almost makes me want to start playing the drums.
Dude,,just fricken start playing, you will not regret it..I said i was to old to start at 35..ill be 60..i cant play this but i can around the kit a little...get a set and start hitting it...hard ..watch the best..at this point stay away from the tedium of boring instruction..be like a 6yr old who walked into a room with drums..that kid after 5 yrs will be vetter than any 35yr old after 5 yrs..Believe me i know i taught golf..which is akin to teaching walking and talking to adults. instructors in any discipline rarely if ever beat natural development..if you get frustrated a little..good..if you get stuck try ..again...if you feel like your wasting your time go to comments section of you tube and some dude like me will be happy to drone on forever about how you should stick it out
The articulation of the groove was perfect. Bernard Purdie would certainly approve of the way you swung that spare shuffle with ease, grace and confidence. Killer job tuning the drums as usual.
You've got Bernard Purdie down right! He did this recording in one take as well. In the control room Donald Fagan said after one take, "Sounds good, now let's go lay it down." Purdie said, "I did" and when they went back and listened, sure enough his take was perfect! FABULOUS!!! YOYOKA
Nailed it!
Would love to hear Bernard Purdie’s reaction to this. He is not known for sugar-coating his opinions😁
Sounds like AI. Purdee sounds like Heaven.
and dats the purdie shuffle folks!
Yoyoka - your progress as a drummer - and your incredibly mature appreciation of quality music - moves me greatly. Steely Dan is one of THE greatest artists of the last 60 years, and this - to me - is one of their best songs. You played the Purdie Shuffle with aplomb, even adding your own little fills (which fit, of course!). I continue to be amazed by you and am eagerly looking forward to following your musical career.
I have listened to this song countless times in my 67 years and honestly, it sounds just like the original.... beat for beat, cymbal strike to cymabl strike. She is the best....
Yoyoka's groove is really exceptional. And I think her groove comes from her huge love of music.
This is excellent. Steely Dan, IMO, is one of the tightest, in the pocket bands ever and Yoyoka was right in that pocket.
Yoyoka “Pretty” Soma!
I listened to 3 of your videos this week without looking at the computer. I was making lunch. Each time I stopped to look I was expecting to see a drummer who is concentrating with their eyebrows stuck together a bit, but I only saw fluid and smooth movements with zero signs of stress. You really capture the groove of whatever you play effortlessly. That is a very rare talent. 🦄
IVE LISTENED TO THIS FOR 45+ YEARS - GREAT DRUMMING !!
It’s nice to see Yoyoka enjoying the groove of Steely Dan. She continues to impress with her diverse choices of music.
I hope she can get with a band that has members as talented as she has become.
I'm not sure she'll need a band. She is creating her first album at the moment. She is a multi instrumentalist, arranger, engineer and understands close harmony. Her creativity is in no doubt either. She loves to perform that is true too. An interesting place to be.
@@andrewplumb6544 She could be like Buddy Rich or Louis Bellson, drummers that formed their own bands.
She's done several discs with the Ken Okada jazz fusion group, and like everything else she's done, she's amazing.

Love that Purdy shuffle. Excellent groove Yoyoka.
I stumbled upon the cover of Good Times Bad Times sometime yesterday evening. I watched it almost in disbelief at how well Yoyoka played and at only 8 years old! C'mon man can this even be real? I sat up until 4:30 am watching and listening to every video I could find of this amazing young drummer. What a talented young lady. Today I started texting and calling my musician friends and family telling them all to get online and check out her videos. I am a fan!
We've all been there. Welcome.
The YOYOKA rabbit hole is well worth the time - again and again. Welcome!
I confess the very same gravity well pulled me in as well and I've loved every moment 😂 ❤❤❤❤.
You are very correct. I am just mesmerized by her talent. I would argue she is one of the best drummers alive today. Still have bonzo on top.
Same.
My taste in music has been expanding as I've been listening to Yoyoka over the years since she was 8.
Watching her talent grow has been such a joy.
Has she ever played live with a real band and not just in the bedroom learning drum patterns from a record ? That is not a drummer. There are Millions of bedroom musicians who just can't play live or with a band ..

@@andrewjones2898incredible how people can find a way to spin a young girl showing us her cool talent into a negative
You’d only need to take 30 seconds looking through some of her videos on here to know she plays live all the time.. She’s been playing live since she was 4/5 years old.
@@booncoAndrew always writes the same nonsense … 😢
Rock solid, young Lady. Bless you for putting in the effort to learning a great song and for all the others you have covered.
Fun stuff. I think Bernard Purdie would be proud
The genius and creativity of artists touches those with the cosmic gift of music regardless of time and culture. Which is why it's called The Universal Language.
So many forgotten songs that deserve to be given a new life by Yoyoka. Carry on with your mission.❤
1000th comment for this perfect performance!!!
Very tight shuffle, one of my fav SD songs...
Anyone else get teary-eyed?
At 14, she's done most of the works. Now it's up to us to support her career. From Canada, Peace out!!
Agreed!!
She’ll be playing on many recordings in the future!
about the time she's 20 she'll be playing multi instruments on numerous recordings... she might even be producing.
Perfect sound level on the ghost notes. The ease that she can play. She just a step above.
Yoyoka, I’m amazed with your playing over the years! Not only do you have on-the-spot rudiments, you match it with dynamics, complexity, and emotion to every song you play… love it! You are such an inspiration to drummers young and old!
I am very, very impressed! I was hard pressed to tell the difference between this and Bernard!
Yoyoka is living proof that you can swing and rock at the same time. Well done!
They were famous for picking exceptional session musicians - and you fit right in! 😉
Absolutely FABULOUS -- Bernard Purdie would be proud! Yoyoka has it all -feel, groove and tons of soul!
Yoyoka drumming as smooth as Maxwell House
I have many favorite Yoyoka covers but this is one of my top three. ❤
I’m a Steely Dan freak. And this is one of my all time favorite songs of theirs. Yoyoka, you do an amazing job on it! Thanks for posting 😊
I played Aja to death.
I love this song and she nails the Purdie shuffle. SD freak here as well. 😊
Can't buy such a musical thrill as this when a Steely Dan song is played by a girl from Aja. Awesome.
Steely Dan, what a band. 4.5 billion years of evolution and I was lucky enough to be born in 1956, just at the right time to catch the great Steely Dan at the start of their journey. Been listening to them for 51 years and will never tire of listening to them. R.I.P. Walter, and some of the guys who have played with them. Amen.
Walter didn't just play he co wrote with Fagen and helped produce and decide the best players to contribute. Killer bassist and guitarist as well.
Yoyoka, I hope Bernard Purdie sees this- if he does, he'll be very proud of you 🙂
Excellent feel, the shuffle is spot on, the tiny nuances of open/close hi hat, snare ghost notes, and her whole presentation of a tough tune to "copy". also love how she plays the song. May i suggest some Gino Vannelli tunes, he always had the best drummers and more intricate beats- Brother to Brother, Seek and you shall Find, Night walker, Apaloosa as examples. Keep up the great work, would love to see you live someday! (64 yr old drummer here still learning!)
Purdie is smiling. I’m convinced.
Thank you Yoyoka. This is my favorite song of all times and Bernard would be proud.
One of my favorite Steely Dan songs and her drumming is spot on. She can do the Bernard Purdie shuffle.
Yoyoka is having so much fun, which makes her performance that much sweeter. She handles Steely Dan masterfully, there's not a rough spot on her. I love her getting into it, got her shoulders in gear. What extraordinary rhythm, timing, power and accuracy under control! Yaaaaayyy Yoyoka! She's the best! More Yoyoka! I love her more! Home at Last! 😂 ❤
Channeling Bernard in many ways. Such groove. So relaxed.
This young lady is so good for not just her age, but for any age.. it's scary. WOW. Said it before along with lots of other people. Amazing. Scary.
Superb shuffle.. quintessential American band, played with Japanese precision and feel. Most awesome young ladie.. awesome.
The Purdie shuffle !
To all great professional drummers.
YOYOKA can definitely replace you anytime.
Forget drumming and enjoy your time!
More Steely Dan. They have the best drummers in the world.
Yoyoka, your accomplishments just continue to amaze me. Rock, pop, funk, metal, fusion, you play them all like a pro. Sitting in with experienced professional musicians, playing with no rehearsal or sound check. Improvising unique and technical solos on the spot. Leading live performances with your atomic clock level time-keeping. And busting out note-perfect drum covers of the most challenging drum tracks ever, even though I don’t think you’ve had a home studio since you moved to SoCal.
I’m so excited to watch it happen for you, thanks again for sharing your journey!❤
ALWAYS in the pocket this girl
Very good 👍 👍👍👍👍
What a smoking performance. Love your drumming. So smoothe and you are so relaxed and happy playing. Beautiful my friend.
Whhaaaaaat? Steeely Dan. So good!!!!!!!!!!!
any friend of Steely Dan is a friend of mine.... 🔥💯💖👍👍
She's got that halftime shuffle down
Perdie Shuffle .......very good job indeed
Cocky, Smug and Awesome. This kid is going places.
Just amazing…just love her enthusiasm and joy in playing…it comes from the inside out.
For me it is still a mystery how such a young girl can have such a deep understanding of the songs she covers. Of course i am also impressed by her physical skill of playing the drums, but to actually play like she does requires a real "understanding" of the music. And she does both with an amazing ease ... a true miracle!
I agree, it is her deep understanding of the music which gives her so much headroom.
A true gift and not a regift. Hope you realize that.
Same deal as Mozart being a prodigy when he was a few years old
That she plays Ian Paice, and he approves says enough.
It comes from within, she doesn't even have to think about it
..got the Purdie Shuffle going smooth like butter
Nice groove. Right in the pocket
Yoyo Ka is the best female drummer living today.
Without a doubt top 5, but it's kind of hard placing her among such great japanese drummers as:
Senri Kawaguchi, her good friend Tamu Murata (Nemophila), Haruna (Lovebites), Akane Hirose (Band-maid) etc.
Yoyoka has been drumming most of her life.. and has amazing technique, and can replicate world class drummers. Though.. she hasn't much experience in writing her own parts.
Maybe that's the only place I see some weakness. Otherwise, she is on par with most of the mentioned.
I sure am curious about where she'll bhe in 10 years.
@@andreaspedersen3952have you been following her work with Ken Ocada?
Nice shuffle.
Watching Ichibon play this classic Bernard Purdy beat, for drummers is like watching Cat videos. Cant help feeling good. Stay Tuned ....
Excellent mix level, and tone of drums, and cymbal selection too!
Yoyoka giving us “The Purdie Shuffle”
Steely Dan is timeless. Great job!
Beautiful understated perfect drumming, just as it should be. Well done!
what a groove
Hi Yoyoka .Fantastic you play very good .Nice to see you and lisen .Best regards from Chile
I don't think Yoyoka is one of the best drummers of all time ,I think she is the greatest drummer of all time
