I am WCU alumni - not gonna say how long ago…
I was in Asheville, Sylva and Cullowhee last week.
Just a heads up if you notice how Sylva is empty its because the college is closed for summer. Cullowhee/WCU was a ghost town the day we visited. Its always like that in the summer.
Sylva is nothing like Asheville other than its kind of eclectic but it has zero city vibes or any homeless people. Asheville’s homeless population has gotten even more out of control than years ago.
Sylvia is just a quiet mountain town. People are friendly and it has stores and lots of great hikes waterfalls and mountain views nearby.

The Fugitive was filmed in Dillsboro, NC, which is just beside Sylva., and also part pf ot was filmed in Bryson city. Some of Three Billboards ( the downtown scenes) as mentioned above was filmed in Sylva. Woody Harrelson actually played one of the guitars in the "In Your Ear" music store you passed by. It really was! I think I have a new place to love!
My wife and I just went visited here July 21st - 26th and we fell in LOVE with the place. We are in the Charlotte area currently and have both been here a majority of our lives and are 100% making the move to that area in the next year.
Everyone my wife and I met in town was super nice... and we did spend a lot of time in town on main street because we picked to come to this town for the FREE level 2 EV chargers. Music bingo night on Monday at Lazy Hiker is a must! You could win gift cards!
Pinnacle Relief which was only like a two minute walk away from Mountain Flora is the same kinda shop but way better prices and an outdoor smoking lounge area right on the creek going through the middle of town.
Also definitely go to Balsam Falls Brewing for some drink, chicken tendies, and trivia night. Totally worth getting a little team together and seeing if y'all can win! I think the winning team gets a gift card also.
