Useless? Beginner's guide to EDC Pouches

- I NEVER considered an Everyday Carry pouch and viewed them as cool-looking, but pointless. Recently though, I've been seeing more and more people in the EDC (Everyday Carry) community showing off their pouch set-ups so I wanted to learn more.
🚨 IMPORTANT: I AM NEW TO EDC POUCHES so this video is just sharing my own newbie learnings lol. I'd love to learn more, so if you're well-versed with pouches, please give me tips in the comments below!

As someone who is somewhat addicted to different bags and organization tools, I've found that having a small edc pouch for random little stuff is really helpful because I can just grab it and drop it in whatever Fanny pack, sling bag, or backpack I'm carrying. I carry a backpack to and from work, a Fanny pack when running short errands, and a sling bag for longer errands and such. An edc pouch let's me quickly pull little stuff out of my bag and throw it in a different one without going down a checklist of items to ensure I've transferred everything from one bag to another.
Also, when it comes to pockets: leather sleeves. They don't had bulk but hold things in place. I've been carrying a hide and drink little leather sleeve to keep all my small edc stuff in my pocket snug, and it's perfect. It's got my knife, flashlight, pill box, pen, and Swiss army knife, and it doesn't add any bulk and keeps things from jangling around or sliding out.

Agreed. Bag-in-bag is a perfect solution for people who swap bags a lot, or just want to keep certain items together at all times.
Bag in a bag is actually one of the best travel hacks when using just a single carry on, as a way to keep your essentials better accessed, and as a way to immediately increase your capacity when you take the bag out.
As an example, I put a 10-12 litre bag with my edc stuff, books, drop kit, etc into my carry on when travelling. When i get in a plane the carry on goes overhead and the day bag gets pulled out and under my seat giving me easy access to headphones and anything I might need. Then if I ever need extra capacity for gifts or groceries when traveling around, the day bag comes out and immediately I just increased my total capacity for my luggage since I usually only travel with only carry on. Bag in a bag is the best travel hack and I’m surprised I dont see more of it around.

The Maxpedition Fatty works for me in my work backpack for years now and still looks completely new. Keep a multitool, bits, some tools, backup stuff and all that in it. I get it out like once a week or so.

Having a small TSA travel bag that has all the cords, cables and back up items ready to go in one place that is grab and go ready is handy. Keeping it simple so no issues at the airport with unexpected blades or other banned travel items is helpful.
I agree, having a pouch for things like that are great especially when it comes to an accidental knifes
It's amazing the options one of these little pouches can offer when loaded with properly curated gear. It goes to work with me every day.
I have a maxpedition micro pouch I can fit in a cargo pocket on my dickies work pants. I like the grab handle on the top as it makes extraction of the pouch from pocket incredibly easy. It carries a 2x AA Olight flashlight, kershaw culpepper slipjoint, titanium adjustable wrench, a hank of paracord, a bic lighter in a exotac sleave, some band-aids, a dude wipes shower wipe, and a pair of nitrile gloves in the mesh outside pocket. (Also just for the hell of it as it adds negligible weight, I tossed in a micro survival kit consisting of a titanium survival card, 50 lb test kevlar thread, spark wheel, and some tinder quiks. )
With the Dude shower wipe I can freshen up that mid-day stink on break from working a physical job. The bandaids are backups to limited amount I keep in my seperate pocket bleed stop/IFAK to patch those torn cuticles, nicks, or cuts I get most days. (I work with and around sharp objects and people who also work with the same. The possibility however small that myself or a co-worker could receive a bleeding wound exists and is worth planning for.) Nitrile gloves are for handling less sanitary clean up tasks or as another back-up to the pair in my IFAK. The paracord gives me options to fasten loose objects (co-workers slipping pants), kill time on break weaving a paracord bracelet if I don't feel like reading, or "heaven forbid" fashion a improvised back-up tourniquet (again see IFAK). The Bic lighter is for melting the paracord ends... plus fire good. The Kershaw Culpepper slipjoint is kept razor sharp for if my main edc blade dulls from cutting plastic strapping, cardboard, and pallet wrap or if I need the less "scary" knife option that a two-hand open traditional slipjoint presents. (I also tend to prefer wharncliffe or sheepsfoot blades for my main "big" knife so having a backup blade with a sharp tip makes logical sense.) Olight lets me see in dark corners to read box labels when my main edc flashlight battery dies. The titanium wrench lets me tighten up loose fasteners on job equipment that my edc victorinox explorer can't cover.
(The micro survival kit is mostly for laughs and seeing the expression on people's faces when I pull out my pouch and people ask me about it. Although I really should add a sewing needle to the kit and then I can repair my pants if I split a seam... which has happened once. 🤔 )
Recently came across your channel randomly, but I'm glad I subscribed. Pouches never really appealed to me until I came to the same realization as you, as I have different backpacks for different occasions(work, motorcycle, and just daily use) I use pouches to quickly move my most frequently used items into my bag without having to move each item one by one
For standalone pouches the vanquest ones are the best i have used. Multi rows of elastic that are offset so that gear doesn't stack when closed and instead nestles together

i didn't know this had a name! i'm so excited. i use a smaller purse that fits in most bags i use for my "emergency supplies" haha. i have a lot of health conditions and trsveling can feel heavy, so making myself a kit has been game changing. i keep nasal spray for nosebleeds, my inhaler, two full days of meds, a dose of emergency allergy meds, a knife, bandaids and an alcohol pad. having a flashlight is genius though!
I've had the best luck with the Maxpedition and Vanquest pouches. Both are very durable and are good organizers.
I recommend something like the olight freyr for in the car. The RGB combined with the diffuser cone makes it a very good roadside emergency signal.

I have an old Eage Creek Hip Pack/Sling from the 80's that's boxy. The waist/shoulder strap tuck away to turn it into an EDC pouch inside my backpack.
I've been using viperade ve1 for left front pocket. It's not as bulky as I thought it might be, and I've been surprised at how often it allows me to complete a task right there, more easily, or without having to run around to find the tool I'd otherwise have stored at home.
I also realized that while that puts knife, phone and keys all in the right pocket, that it's a more natural placement anyway since I'm usually carrying bags/groceries/kids with my left and hate having to reach across for keys anytime I throw them in the left pocket.
Another great video and my main takeaway is the need to really pin down what do you really need everyday. The other is the need for more than one bag/pouch etc. Investigate EDC very long and you realize there is a lot of overlap.

Nice. I like using pouches as my Rucker3 serves as a work bag and a daily carry bag. I am able to use pouches to easily add or remove ‘work required’ items as I need them.
I just ordered one! I'm excited to have a place for all my odds and ends, and all those odds and ends in their place & easy to find.
👍🏼good vid. Funny quick intro. Just started carrying a pouch for my goat multitool. I am liking it. I custom hooked it to my belt to keep out of bottom of my pocket so I don’t have to sit on it. Mine is an $8 noname. Been looking at viperade ev10.

I've been rocking pouches for a bit and have a few. Currently using the NotoriousEDC AGP (all good pouch) and it's probably my favorite so far. The Alpaka Hub is way too small for my needs but good for smaller setups.
I find a dedicated headlamp is best for the car because usually it's easier to aim where you need it, the beam pattern tends to be wider, and no hat is required. It's perfect for changing a tire in the dark or checking something under the hood. I also have the same Fenix E12 with Eneloops. In fact all my emergency lights, headlamps, and lanterns are Fenix and use AA because you can more often than not scrounge around and find another AA if it ever gets to that point.
I've been looking for a pouch to throw in my glove box and another for my sling bag and each has different requirements.
I ordered Alpaka hub pouch and Pro zip wallet a few days ago. These will be my first high quality pouches.
Nowadays I use off brand pouches, that's what I do with every item I consider buying.
I have a pouch for "wallet" that holds rarely used cards, pen, ThinOptics Sun, permanent marker and a pen refill.
I also have a small toolkit pouch that holds many micro tools that pack a huge punch.
Pouches are good for me for two reasons:
1. As you mentioned, they go between my two backpacks and a sling.
2. My backpacks lack the organization I need for everything I mentioned. Pouches fix that, and that's what I think you were also missing in your understanding of pouches 😊😊
I use the Alpaka pouch. I really like it and I keep it in my glove box with some similar items in my sling bag.

Caught a few of your videos and they’re great. An important thing though about EDCs is for each user to figure out what they really need for everyday situations and common emergencies. Beyond my swiss knife and tools i carry my basic meds, bandaids, a small amount of money, a whistle, a tiny spray for ethyl alcohol, and a small pack of tissues. Might probably throw in there a rechargeable flashlight, 3 in 1 usb cable, usb flash drive, and the slimmest 5000 mAh battery I can find. The EDC should be the second layer of things to grab when leaving the house after your wallet, phone, and keys, or might include them as well.
Just came across this video. Love this. I am a fan of pouches and backpacks. I am a pianist for a living but I have a thing about carrying E.D.C. Pouches. I do carry backpacks or briefcases to work depending on which day and what i feel like carrying. Everything has its kit ready so I can just take it and do little transfer. The pouches really compliment the backpacks well and even around the house I carry a pouch. Love pouches. I hate keeping things in my pockets like masks, handkerchiefs and sanitizers and more. It looks to bulky and is weird. Even though guys have deep pockets, it is not comfortable to sit down and at the end of the day it is back side sore when you have things in your pockets. A pouch is totally necessary. Got to love them. You are going to feel it anyway but the pouch really releases the burden from your pockets. It’s like having an extra set of pockets up front.
Just got into pouches make it easier to free up pocket space since I hate having a lot of things in my pocket but also make it easier to keep everything together when needed, I use the brotacgear sleek MaXcro pouch, black canvas accessories edc ultra pouch, or the gondekEDC ranger pouch
I have their smaller Zip Pouch that I keep in my Black Ember Kompak. I've seen it used as a wallet as well, it can fit cards and folded bills nicely, but I use it to keep various tinier doodads that would otherwise rattle around and might easily get lost, such as the magnetic tips for my Volta USB cables. On the rare occasion where I use another bag than the Kompak I can just toss it in that bag without having to collect bits and bobs from various compartments to move to the other bag.

I use the alpaka zip pouch for a tiny wallet for cards only and a slim "Swiss knife card" just in case.
For edc pouch I use a generic leather pouch to hold extra cables, phone stand, mini speaker, microfiber cloth and extra cables. Its about the size of a fist, and fills most of my "emergency tech" needs that go with my bigger bags.
For traveling I use the alpaka elements tech case for a day sling/ backpack organisation for my wallet, phone, battery bank and earphones.
Awesome video. Honestly the draw on pouches for me is less about the pouch and more about the customization options with patches lol I’ve seen some suuuuper awesome ones.
For the usb charging, I have a hand crank charger and i also have a battery pack that solar charges. I love haveing bags in bags. This way everything is all together all the time and the peace of mind is there. Also like George Carlin explained, you can divide down to varying layers of 'stuff' that is most appropriate for the occasion.
Alpaca elements max is my favourite. I love their gear :)
For work I carry a Nutsac 13 satchel with a full admin bag. For outdoor personal activities, including photography, I am breaking in a LA Police Gear Tactical Mil-Spec Jumbo Operator Bag and still using the Nutsac admin bag. The Nutsac satchel was chosen specifically because it works with my work laptop and I wouldn’t be tempted to overload the bag with tons of personal items. The Operator Bag, far larger, was chosen because the main compartment will hold a full size DSLR with 400 zoom lens, the admin bag, which is loaded with cords, and my iPad Air. Not too mention room on the outside for water bottles and a multitude of EDC items I am still testing out for outdoor activities.
My personal favorite pouches are from Maxpedition. Been using my Micro regularly for 3 years now, its great
I just purchased and recieved this very same pouch and I'm loving it. I just purchased specific new gear for this pouch and yes! I got the Olive not the black one. Do I have others yes, Vanquest. But right now this is my fav. I also carry a pack but when I'm on the go, this is my preference! Enjoyed the vid.

I use the "Plan B Mini Pouch v2" I found on mochithings. I'm a woman that doesn't like purses, so I carry everything in my (undersized) pants pockets. This pouch holds everything but my phone, which means I no longer forget things and my back pockets are empty.
The functionality I can fit inside it is outstanding: Outer pocket holds my RFID transit pass for easy boops. Three inner elastic bands for ID/credit card/debit card, chapstick, and tiny pill tube with ibuprofen/lactaid. Inner side pocket holds cash, business cards I might pick up, card sleeve with punch cards, and so on. The middle has my keys, a tiny pen, emergency hair tie, and emergency pocket tampon (game changer). I want to add some card-sized scratch paper for leaving recommendations and whatnot with people.
It certainly tests the limits of women's pockets, but it's worth it for me.

I always buy maxpedition type pouches since they come with molle webbing and belt clip plus a loop for carabiner. So it can used standalone or bag in a bag situation.
Interesting take on the battery for torch. I went everything USB for the opposite reason, it's so ubiquitous.
I almost always have a powerbank in my bag/sling, my laptop can act as a battery, I have USB in the car and small solar panels with usb output are commonplace.
I have an A4 sized one in my car always, just in case. If really needed there's adapters that will take 2x aaa or aa and output to usb so you can always fallback to those.
Plus side of going USB (and more recently everything USB-c) standardized power across camera, phone, torch, laptop, speaker, radio, pretty much anything with power.
I use a pocket pico from Yellow Birch Outfitters. Serves as a wallet and organizer

A pouch can completely change how you EDC different gear. The glove box is also a perfect example as well!
I use the alpaka zip pouch and it’s a game changer for me carry the fenix u have in there and a sak compact extra battery , lighter , and a few bandaids and triple antibiotic and also in the small zipper my ID , Medicare and debit

The patches are most commonly referred to as “moral patches”, at least that is the only term I’ve ever heard for them. I’ve never heard them called R.E. patches. But good video, I am a fan of pouches to organize my EDC gear.
Now I know what to get for my hubby’s birthday.
I used to carry an Alpacka mini pouch but it wasn’t so accessable and too stuffed. So now I moved to a Viperade VE10
I’ve tried several types of divider pouches (maxpedition, viperade, Vanquest, etc) and they’re never quite right. I like the lightweight, non-divided ones made out of xpac or a similar fabric

As an emergency/survival pouch I use the First Responders by maxpedition.
Any reviews about how safe the belts are attached to these pouches? What materials are used, which ideally should be those which cannot be cut.
Heeeey, you figured out the pouch concept😁👍. It's a personal preference thing, to each thr own 🤷♂️.
For me personally, i have a full medical pouch from "Live The Creed" as well as an edc pouch that i carry when i travel far and stay for days. Vacations. Or long day trips.
I use edc pouches for long day trips that involve a lot of walking around or hiking. So I'll grab my edc pouch (i use viperade) and throw it in my sling or my backpack. Whichever i decide to take.
I keep a pouch in my glove box for times i dont carry a sling or backpack with me. My slings and backpacks are more of the dump style, so one big pocket. Maybe a small pocket or two the most. Pouches make sense for me to keep my edc gear together and organized. While still having room for other larger items, i may want to carry in my bag.
For regular normal days where im just going to work and staying in town, not traveling, or taking long day trips, I'll have a pocket organizer that doubles as a wallet. I'll have my multi-tool clipped on my belt or clipped on my pocket. This way, for me, i dont FEEL like im carrying a lot or weighing myself down. And i know i have my packed out pouch in my car if needed.
@MauriceMoves As I am taking you at your word regarding your background, you can do the same with mine. I actually do a lot of ground traveling to certain sites assisting principals/stakeholders around certain areas of security. As such, many times I not only have my backpack, I own a few of the small pouches that I have in my vehicle. Sometimes, I need to go through and at times get stuck in some really bad weather and other situations. My question to you, is how is the pouch that they sent you standing up to wear and tear since getting it last year? Any issues with the stitching? Is there double stitching in all areas? Maybe as a takeaway / lesson learned, in the future you could include more information about the over all construction of the carrying bag / pouch / gear. Thanks.

Question for you, not necessarily about this video, but this video is your latest and it pertains to a few of your other videos. I am having a hard time finding a tech case that fits a vertical mouse (ex logitech vert mx). I’m also a Bellroy fangirl. I reached out to Bellroy about the size of their desk caddy and if a vert would fit, and they unfortunately said no. Have you come across any tech cases that would fit cords and a vertical mouse that has a harder shell but is more like a tech case (with organization or just open)? Finding internal 2d dimensions has been slim to none as most dimensions are per volume. I appreciate you reading this. I continue my hunt. Thank you :)

Thx for this vid. But did you say"magnetic"? I would suggest the company Alpaka overthinks their product line: do never use bank or credit cards in the near of a magnetic source, may it be of a mobile cover (they love doing that here) or other. You will eventually lose your card and it takes weeks to receive a new card.

I prefer headlights that have the ability both to charge with usb and use batteries. (Not for everyday carry of course since they can take quite a bit room but for a car emergency kit etc.)

Yeah, I love pouches for moving my EDC from bag to bag but check this out. I'm cheap AF. I just buy 2 compartment zipper pencil pouches. I can buy them in multiple colors and they are big enough to store most of my stuff. I have a small handyman pouch, electronics pouch, and an ouch pouch. On my actual bugout bag I have a WAY more comprehensive version of each of these but for the stuff that absolutely stays with me and moves from bag to bag, it's pencil time baby.

My perfect bag is a Bellroy Venture 9 sling.. the problem of this pouches is that if you can t wear a trouser belt , you should carry it on your hands.. i prefer to wear one bag and if i go to other places , i have a specific bag with other material.. one bag for all things it's impossible, if you want to go to the mountains not it is the same that you use in a wedding time... jaja

I've got a couple of smaller "pocket organizers" I use for EDC, which I also make sure to not overload-- Because, they start to become a problem when you "have the right tool for the job," but, you can't find that tool when you need it because it's camouflaged by all the other "right tools for other jobs." Fwiw 🤦

It seems that Maurice has an EDC pouch, it is his sling. Same idea, different size.
I keep an EDC pouch in my tactical pack just to keep all the small stuff together.
I hate having to rummage around for my EDC like it's a woman's purse.
I always had to do that with my old worn-out sling bag because it had no seperate inner pockets, and it is just messy and unprofessional.
It also damages your stuff, as everything just clutters together.

For cheaper price, I will go for Maxpedition, for higher price tag pouch, GBG and Notoriousedc all good pouch.
