When it comes to cut content, this is by no means the most massive chunk, but I felt like it was significant mostly in its relationship to such a significantly mysterious item in Bloodborne. I hope you found this a little interesting!

I have to admit, over all I find this really confusing. I always figured there was really no connection between Mergo/Yharnam and Kos/Orphan. But the priest's reaction makes me feel like maybe at some point there was meant to be? Kinda interested to hear what you'se think.

It makes me feel like the Hamlet Priest empathized with Queen Yharnam's loss of her Infant Great One through the Yharnam Stone, just as Kos lost hers.

The connection is that the priest is heartbroken over the fact that the orphan was ripped from his mother. Mergo was also ripped from her Mother (literally) and I suppose he feels some comfort knowing that there are other mothers out there that have lost children. There’s also a connection between both being children who are great ones.

My impression is that there is no direct connection between the Hamlet and Queen Yharnham, but that the priest is marveling at the "mother's devotion" that clings to the stone which references his earlier dialogue about the curse clinging like a mother's devotion, and then as thanks he gives you a "blessing" from kos. Because this dialogue and interaction was cut, it implies that if the blessing was an actual item we were to be given, the item was either cut (which would likely have trace bits of information still left in the files that I would expect to have been found by now), or was an item that we ended up obtaining in another way which I find to be the more likely outcome.
Just a shot in the dark but I'd guess that in an earlier version of the game the Milkweed rune would have instead been given to us through this method but was changed to the bloated head quest so as not to gate content behind something that a much smaller minority of players would do. Perhaps even the Kos Parasite working the way it does with Milkweed had not been determined yet but by making Milkweed necessary to use Kos Parasite they didn't want to make Arcane builds have to do the entire chalice dungeon run through everytime. After all the beast claws which is the yin to the parasite's yang you only have to do a few chalices to get.

Makes me wonder if miyazaki intended to connect BB to DS3 when he made BB.
His dialogue does make it look like its connected.
"Messenger" i doubt that he would mistake us to those little anorexic skeletons
As well as "from beyond" and "mother"
What if the player character truly is from DS universe and that this painting is rotting.
The mother he speak of is none other than the painter girl.
"Seek the paleblood" has a different meaning to me now after Gael's line of "blood of the dark soul"
To me, paleblood is either blood derived from the light soul or what happens when the paint rots
Much like in painting of ariandel, his painting started to get cold/frozen when the painting started to disintegrate.
What if the painting is flooded on the account that its rotting?
Like aldrich dreamt, which his dreams normally come true.
The fishermans dialogue truly make it seem like miyazaki already was way ahead or rather got DS3 content from BB.

    • @-v0n-
      @-v0n- 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

@@wanderingbufoon There's also that whole idea of the next age in dark soul, being in Aldritch vision, the "Age of the deep sea".
And yeah there's all that thing around blood in DS3 DLC.
I think the curse of men, in DS, is not a "frozen concept" as it evolves.
While men were once inheritor of a Soul (such like Gwyn, Nito and Izalith), Gwyn accursed the men with a seal of fire, changing forever their nature as well as the one of the world by linking it.
And while the curse was at start something related to soul, it changes its nature through time to turn it into blood.
It became concrete, while souls are supposely ethereal. Blood is profane while soul is divine, if you prefer.
That's why the Dark soul once was a soul, while in the end, it's blood.
And this is why the abyss evolved in two separate concepts: the deep (related to sea) and the rot (related to flesh).
They become two side of a same coin, one representing a kind of ascencion, a future (the deep sea, the future age seen by Aldritch) while the other one represents an end, a stagnation (the rot, seen in the painting, but also through ennemies infected by Pus of men as an example)
Even the world is rotting in its own way, through those dead roots appearing all around it (and that are nearly everywhere in its end).
This way it could make some sense that BB world could be the age of the deep sea!
Also, there's something really interesting in DS3, and that's the Pilgrims. Purely related to dark at start, they were seeking for ascencion, and they found it by turning into celestials creatures: Angels.
They are deeply linked to the curse through the game, and by extension, maybe those angels are in their own kind, the "newborns gods" that replace Gwyn and his kind (Gwyn and his kind being the Gods of the age of fire, while those angels would be the Gods of the Age of the deep sea) and by extension, the ancestors of BB divinities.
Other point on this, is that they are born from men, from the curse, and in BB main game, the "perfect ending" shows that men can ascend to those celestials gods, implying that they were humans once, just like Men and Angels.
Of course, that's only paralleles between DS and BB universe, and they are untrue as Myazaki stated that BB and DS are not linked.
But well, as you said, maybe at some point he wanted to connect those two worlds! And it's still interesting to find connexions like these, and try to give them some meaning!

If I had to venture a guess I would have to say that it has something to do with the fact that the Pthumerians were in contact with the Great Ones, including Kos. The item Queenly Flesh is similar to the Yharnam Stone, both are remains of Pthumerian or Pthumerian/Human hybrids, and is indicative of their immortality. When the Queenly Flesh is presented to the Altar of Despair, the game tells you that "Time runs in reverse," implying that the Pthumerians and the Great Ones seemed to share some sort of ability to move backwards in time within certain contexts. Notice the priest says "Time is not, and the sea rumbles afar" again implying that time is out of wack. I guess we can say that upon seeing this, he understands that the Queen has been killed, yet still lives (or has the potential to live again). Seeing as she was royalty among a master race blessed by Great Ones, it would make sense for the priest to have some sort of reverence to her...

i'd imagine its purpose is similar to the yharnam stone's in this video - give you a bit of extra dialogue providing additional lore, but nothing more. i believe its intended purpose was fulfilled, and i doubt datamining the game would give any insight as to removed functions of the item

My read of this is that giving him the stone was the original way to receive the Kos parasite, which is the "blessing of kos" he mentions, with the last gurgle intended to sound like he is regurgitating it for you or something. Maybe the devs decided that the kos parasite was a little too good of a weapon to hide behind killing the superboss and decided to make it easier to obtain, and so changed things around, with as a result the yharnam stone remaining without a purpose.

The priest is actually a direct reference to Charles le Sorcier, from the small story "The Alchemist", written by Lovecraft on 1908. When he says "mercy for the poor", he's actually paying respect to all the peasant children his father was falsely accused of kidnapping. The curse section references to when Charles, after discovering his father was killed over false accusations of having kidnapped Comte's son, Godfrey, curses the entire Comte's family and any child his son would have in the future, also including his grandchildren and beyond. This curse limits the lives of everyone born from his blood to last no longer than his by the time Charles pronounced it.
I love this game so much. Amazing video btw man, a large insight as always

Caution: a lot of rambling is coming.
Could it be that, originally, the Yharnam Stone was used by the Byrgenwerth scholars (the ones that originally invaded the Chalice Dungeons, aka Pthumeru) to fertilize Kos (or outright revive the Orphan that died inside her) to produce a human-like creature (aka the Orphan, now devoid of both natural and surrogate mother) with both the powers of blood and magic, something to both contain the old blood of the great ones and the human prowess of hunters (making it so that his own placenta would work like a trick weapon), ? We do know that all great parties in Yharnam came in contact with Kos (the mentioned experiments of Byrgenwerth), as well as the Orphan already being around (or the Fishing Hamlet priest would not have known that the Orphan was "wizened"), so could it be? After all, many inhabitants of the Fishing Hamlet keep saying "Mother is dead, her baby taken". That would mean that at some point the Orphan was taken out by someone and something was done to him. The curse of the hunters in the Hunters' Nightmare, after all, stemmed from the Orphan being messed with, and could explain the slug-like appearance of the chosen children of the Great Ones in the present. Or maybe it's the other way around: Kos's child was taken from her and he somehow ended up becoming Mergo, with its surrogate mother being Yharnam. So, by impeding his birth in the past in the Chalice Dungeon, closed in the Yharnam Stone, we're bringing back to the Priest the unborn form of the Orphan, protected by the unbending will of both his mothers (Kos conceiving him and wanting him to live, Yharnam accepting him and also wanting him to live), which could very well be what the priest is admiring most of all.
I'm so confused, but this opens up so many possibilities!
Thank you so much, Lance, your work is wonderful.

It seems that the stone holds a significance similar to what the Dark Soul meant in Dark Souls 3. It was an item which tied the endgame content from the base game into the end of the DLC. Providing the player with that very small sense of hope for the future of a dying world.
A gift dignifying a lost child, made to a lost child.
