    It may have begun life as an April Fools joke, but the Holley Sky-Ram intake is the real deal-so real in fact, we put it to the test on the engine dyno at Westech Performance. Watch as our side-show spectacle turned performance part proves it might not be so ridiculous after all.

    It added 110ft/lbs under the curve at 3600-3700 rpms, that would feel AMAZING on the street. Guys are always talking about what is going to feel good when you're driving the vehicle everyday vs what is the most "racy" thing. That a Sky-Ram is the best truck intake EVER. I wanna see it with boost. I think the HP curve could be extended a while longer before it falls on it's face with forced induction. I really hope you guys do a Sky-Ram production run. I legit think it would sell out. Maybe experiment with a shorter production Sky-Ram that gives the performance and carries a little higher in the Rpms and still has the insane looks. I think this thing is A joke that turned into a viable product.

    Dear Holley, I think you should create a modular Hi-Ram intake where the middle of the runners has a bolted together flange, that way the intake could be run like normal and you could sell runner extensions in 5 and 10 inch increments, that way a guy could choose how much "Sky-Ram" he wants or he could even keep adding them until he has a Space-Ram. Seriously thought, you could increase the runner length by 5-10 inches at a time and tune the runner length for your application on the fly to what best suits you.

    • @michaelblacktree
      @michaelblacktree 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yep, and it's probably the first reflected wave, so the signal is very strong. Hence the big hump in a narrow rpm range.

    • @timothybayliss6680
      @timothybayliss6680 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@michaelblacktree thats not going to be the first wave, you can see the secondary rise at about 4700. Lets assume its about 3600rpm, thats close enough. In one revolution, 360°, sound will travel about 19 feet. Its a reflective wave so half that distance is 9.5'. Its the secondary or tertiary wave. Without the exact cam specs and centreline runner lengths its hard to know for sure. The graph makes me think its tertiary. The secondary is at about 4700 and would make the primary at about 10k rpm.
      Garage 4age did a test with 24" extensions on a 9000rpm ITB deal. Chasing the primary wave.

    4:06.... (VE number) volumetric efficiency is what he's talking about basically saying that this is where the Pulses from each cylinder line up just right to compress a little tiny extra air into each Powerstroke. It's basically where the intakes harmonic frequency is.

    • @pronewbofficial
      @pronewbofficial 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thinking about it as a harmonic frequency helps me understand why a larger one would help low end torque (lower frequency - larger wavelength), and a smaller one would help higher rpm torque (higher frequency - smaller wavelength). Thanks.

    80’s FLASHBACK! Basically you built a TPI intake from the late 80’s. Long runner length = massive torque but rpm’s done by 5k. Still love the TPI!

    My dad had a 67' wickens f/b , that had 427 chevy built by Louis Unser in it. The manifold on it was a Edelbrock SP-2P shoe box ram. That manifold cruising down the river (1800-2200 rpm) in july at a ambient temp of 112°f would form ice. Making ponies!

    Dear Holly:
    Please print a version of this intake with 2 smaller manifold's on either side just above the fuel injectors with a butterfly valve that can switch from the long Sky-Ram to the short runners!
    Perhaps the best of both worlds is the possibility??
    although with a very crazy looking and large, heavy and high center of gravity intake manifold, lol.
    It would be such sweet dyno fun to see if you can get that whole power band up higher on the dyno sheet and carry it all the way to 6500 RPM..🤔🤔🤔

    A grunt-a-gear tow vehicle would LOVE this 'Sky Ram'.
    No need to rev over 5,000 when you can pull a house off its foundation at 3,700 rpm.

    Actually I’ve been looking for a much taller intake for years. I have a 1957 pickup with a ls6 intake. It looks odd. I have a ton of under hood space. There are applications like mine where this would sell in a kit form. Maybe a kit that’s adjustable with different length runners. Nowadays the ls motor is in everything. More options please.

  • @fredygump5578
    @fredygump5578 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I get it! With this long intake, the air's inertia is pushing it's way into the engine, overcoming the pressure wave created when the intake valve closes. So there is always positive pressure at the valve...until the runner length starts restricting air flow. Same concept as with a tuned exhaust!

    • @quickcinema8031
      @quickcinema8031 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, do we need to increase the diameter, or increase the diameter of the intake progressively to the rpm ?

    • @fredygump5578
      @fredygump5578 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@quickcinema8031 You would need to calculate how much air is pumped through the engine at the desired RPM, and then adjust diameter to match that flow. I imagine there is an optimal air velocity to runner length ratio, so it would take some testing to figure out.

    @chaseman113 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome this works so well. And I know the dude mentioned Chrysler’s Ram Induction but he didn’t
    say Chrysler put a 30 inch version under the hood.
    There’s old Chrysler magazine advertising showing the tubes and a dyno chart that almost matches holleys dyno chat curve.
    Except every old disadvantage from long runners and carbs Chryslers fought is gone with fuel injection. Wicked

  • @johnclary729
    @johnclary729 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I still want to to see a really long-duration cam paired with this to use the long runners to make grunt at low RPM and the cam to make power at high RPM and the runner cross-section to keep power up in the middle and top of the range. If they made the CSA as big as I read in some internet articles it will work.

    Talk about hood clearance, I've got an 82 GMC B6000 (Bus) and it's got over 3.5 ft of clearance under the hood if not more. This thing would barely stick out of the hood if at all. I'd love to have that low end torque so I could gear the thing up too for cross country travel. Shame you guys aren't selling these, or at least releasing the STLs or CAD files so I can make my own. Hell I've got a CR-30 I could print the runners in one go, all be it 4 at a time, but the print would be continuous all the way through the runners.

    For next year: fenderwell-exit split intake. Just split this in half, with each half curving out to the side with throttle body and conical filter protruding from the fenders. It'll really SUCK - air.
