    I am attempting to grow a syngonium from cuttings in water. My mother gave them to me after she almost killed her plant. The original plant given to her was my grandmother’s. My grandmother grew her syngonium from cuttings her mother gave her.
    I’m it’s last hope…..lol. Wish me luck! I’d love to keep the tradition going and give cuttings to my future daughter.
    Your video was so down to earth and simple. Thank you…..it’s just what I needed.

  • @Weirder_the_better

    Syngoniums are one of my favorite types of plants - so underrated! I definitely agree that they seem to prefer lower light. The leaves quickly get washed out in color or droopy when getting too much light. I've never had issues with thrips with all of mine but they have battled spider mites numerous times. I guess it depends on the weather/region! I finally got my hands on a Rayii after so long and I'm obsessed with it.

    • @evicaf4e
      @evicaf4e 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm my syngoniums love bright (in)derect light... they do get direct light especially in the summer time. They love it, if I put it in medium-low light they will stop growing.

    • @Weirder_the_better
      @Weirder_the_better 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@evicaf4e interesting!! Maybe mine have just adjusted to these conditions. I’ve tried giving them direct light in the past but they burned! 😩 but bright indirect light seems to be a good way to go for most plants!

    • @evicaf4e
      @evicaf4e 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Weirder_the_better yes, I know... maybe mine are just used to it, but yes I have a tree that blocks that sun rays in some way, but they still reach the window. But so many of my plants died because I dont have them right infront of that window. But I think that plants get used to the light you provide them some extent and will tolerate it.

    Thank goodness I found this video in time, my mother gifted me two syngoniums and I have them on the window sill in direct light! And here I thought I was helping them, the horror! What a miracle, this came at the perfect time to save my gorgeous plants. I adore them and look forward to collecting a ton of varieties (I came from your other video on them and am on the lookout for a starlight)! So really thanks so much and hope there will be more on them or with them featured in the future!

    I also love syngonium! I love them vining, climbing, what ever way they wanna grow! They are wild and unruly and I absolutely love them. And so do spider mites. I've nearly reached my wits end with the whole spider mite thing. I would absolutely chunk every plant in my collection if I got thrips. I don't have the time nor the patience for such pests.

  • @BLANKU2
    @BLANKU2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    My Syngonium's thrive under a skylight and I always keep them in plastic pots hidden in catch pots so I'm not dealing with water in ceramic this way I can lift them out and check for moisture. Every time I've tried potting them in terra cotta or ceramic pot it throws them off. I 100% believe in plastic planters for them and also too bottom watering as well.

    I was gifted a rooted cutting of a pinkish-looking syngonium, and it's basically done nothing but unfurl a single (pre-existing) leaf since I got it. I did give it one of the best indirect-light spots I have, but have now moved it back a bit, based on this video, as that's the only thing I may be doing differently.
    I find it baffling, mostly, because I'm used to unhappy plants showing some signs I might be able to diagnose, but this one is just not growing, but it's also not yellowing or drooping or dropping leaves or anything like that. Never heard of a plant preferring less light when not in direct sunlight, but I hope that helps it.

    Totally agree about the thrips! I never had any until I got a couple of syngonium. But fortunately they are pretty easy to get rid of. I gave mine a nice shower, sprayed with Neem oil soap spray, and then top watered in some worm castings to help it recover (it was still putting out a ton of new growth).

    It's so weird that all the problems you have had with your syngoniums I've never had, I wonder if it's to do with environment (I'm from australia)? My syngos are against a window and get direct morning light, have only had spidermite once because I introduced an alocasia that had them (never thrips), and they've never had root rot and im an overwaterer (except my panda once but I repotted that and its fine now). Definitely my most hardy and beautiful plant, and one I recommend to everyone. Love them ❤

    • @emmap3283
      @emmap3283 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i think its definitely partially a humidity thing! i find thrips are a lot more aggressive in lower ambient humidity, and sun strength would definitely be different in oppposite hemisphires i think. Maybe I should move to australia for the thrip repellent air haha!

  • @geslinam9703

    I have the common one you see everywhere, it was part of a gift basket I took apart. It doesn’t do well until I put it outdoors in the spring, where it gets AM light and indirect the rest of the day…then it grows like crazy and looks beautiful. So maybe it’s the lack of humidity indoors. I bought a ruby arrow one today!

    I had one syngonium a few years ago, my first experience with thrips. It eventually died. I was very hesitant to get another. I bought a white butterfly 2 months ago, and yep, thrips. 😠 Luckily I caught it early and it seems to be thriving. Just added a pixi to my collection. Keeping a constant eye on them though.

    Thanks for this video. Came at a perfect time. I have some Syngonium in east facing window and one in the west, off to the side. It seems the leaves just are getting any larger 🤷‍♀️. Can’t figure out why.

    You look great Harli! I have a couple pots of the white butterfly ones. I gave my third pot to my daughter. I have had super good luck with them.

    I’m in San Antonio and when I moved here 8 years ago there was one outside in a planter. We named her Lucy and she’s been with me ever since. She’s had many many babies and I’ve gifted so many to people. Currently I have no mess than 6 pots outside. She does well in sun and shade here. I wish I could keep some inside but we have 90% uv blocking screens. No indoor plants. So sad

    Oh you read my mind Harli! I was contemplating giving my syngonium away just yesterday because it didn’t seem happy with me anymore. After watching this I’m thinking it just doesn’t want to be near the new grow light 💡 hope that’s all! It started flopping over the pot like it’s too heavy. Leaves look good. It was just watered too. Any ideas? Almost seems like it needs a support?

    I have recently started growing my syngonium collection. I like to start with one plant of any type and if I don’t kill it, I get more, lol.

    I had a large one and thought that I would probergate it when I came home from holiday in July, I had a friend stay in my house and when I came home it was the only of my plants that died, I'm not sure why she didn't see that it was dying and needed watering, I've brought a small one and hope it will survive my holiday home next month fingers crossed

    I love my syngoniums I think they're easy to grow I let my cousin stay here and her cat knocked mine over twice broke part of it and knocked it off the counter and I just put it back in the dirt madder than a wet sitten hen and the crazy thing went on a crazy growth spurt thank goodness its beautiful

    I loved my syngoniums so much! Especially my pink syngonium. They were so full and vibrant and then thrips invaded them and I tried everything possible to save them, but never could. The Neem didn’t even phase them. I repotted and bought everything I could to save them, but I had to throw them away in the end. That broke my heart. I was really attached to them. I won’t ever get syngoniums again, despite how much I love them.😔

    I love syngoniums! I have two near a South-facing window, maybe I'll move them a bit further back. I learned a bunch from this video, thanks!
