Once I switched from moss to perlite in a cup, I never went back. Perlite is easy to separate than moss from the sticky roots and also retains water great when you store your cups in a clear propogation box/container. There's also plenty of air gaps so don't need drainage holes in my cups.
Great tips! My favorite recycled container for propagation: a large sprinkle cheese container. The lid is great for controlling humidity! Open the “pour” side for lots of air flow, the “sprinkle” side for a little flow. You can just cut the bottom off and place it over the plant. Or you could also plant right inside the uncut container if you wish!
I never understood why others could use spaghnum to root but me. Mine always rot. (Turns out per this video i wasnt allowing enough air to the roots and leaving the moss too wet. Ty for the info girl!💚
I use spegnom moss 90 % of the time when propagating. I also use the plastic conditioner s that my muffins come. Lastly when my adult son gets slurpees, I tell him I want his cups.😂 they are alot easier. My mother always said work with you got.
I LOVE propagating hoya on soil. I put it in a tiny clear pot with a lid/plastic wrap and make sure the stem is touching the soil. The plant grows directly into the soil and I don’t have to repot for a loooong time. I always end up forgetting to pot up my props so this has been a great method for me :)

For water prop I'm doing a large Billietiae top cutting in a very clear container with a small aquarium pump. It's working great. The air roots started to sprout new roots in 4 days. Almost ready to pot up.
I air prop mine with moist sphagnum moss, then when they start growing secondary roots, I chop and allow to callous for a day or two. Then put in orchid pots with lots of holes. But at that point i use my coco perlite plus vermiculite blend that I use with all my plants. 100% success with this method.

@@amberfrazier575 I’ve seen it done @techplant did a series ripped in to one. Some restocks were had long internodes on both ends. Some had the mode at the top of the internode stick and the third set with the node at the bottom of the internode wet stick. It was interesting to see the results.
And my collection of clear cups lids and containers is crazy 😂😂😂 I’ve found the ones with the dome lids are great for holding props up right! I cut a slit down the side of the dome to easily take it off the stem once it grows or I’ll cut out the straw hole and add a slit for the same purpose! ❤
I have fish tanks and propagate my Pothos and such out of the top of both and it looks great, but also is easy and quick. a few, I've left there and trim the roots every once in while.
Hey Harli, nice video. 😊 As and addition I recommend you watch the video called "which node end matters when propagating" by Techplant. He Made an experiment with different Long cutting stems and discovered that the longer the stem of the cutting, the faster it actually grows roots since the new plant has more plant material to feed from. Works for epipremnum, scindapsus etc.

I like your video. I’m a lazy propagator, and only propagate to convert a leggy plant to a many-stemmed bushier plant. I find success planting node cuttings directing into my chunky (Molly’s) Aroid mix (sometimes along side the mother plant) and placing under a grow light, and checking daily to see if they need watering. I may suffer a few dead nodes, but I’ve planted so many nodes, it doesn’t see to affect the overall aesthetic. What I really have a problem with is propagating non-aroids, like dieffenbachia, 😊, and addendums. Any suggestions? Would your sphagnum moss approach work?

My wife likes cotton candy from Walmart (and other places). I use the🤣 cups (two sizes) for propagation. With only 2" or so of moss in the bottom with my cutting. In the taller one I don't always use the lid, little like your styrofoam container. I burn holes in the lids with a pen tip on my wood burning tool could use a pen style solder iron too, if I use them which I do on the smaller cups and sometimes on the tall ones. Its sort of like your coffee cups but may have thicker lids. You may not know everything about plants, but you know more than some and some more than those who know a lot too. 😂🤣😂
I have a question… I’ve propagated a lot over the years. Something I have come across that I never really know what to do with is when you get far more root growth from the cutting in the box than foliage growth. Especially when propagating nodes. There will be roots a foot long but barely any foliage. They will stay this way forever too. Sometimes I can pot them up when they are tiny. Have you come across this?
When it comes to the propagation box, I have been finding myself forgetting to let them breathe. So I've been considering putting some holes in my propagation boxes, do you have any advice for placement and quantity? Like I want them to breath, but still retain some humidity, so I thought not too towards the top. I've seen some people with holes just in the lid, others they have one hole on each side. While the amount I'm curious as well, like a small container two to four holes, while a larger gets like four to ten? How many and where do you place holes for airflow without removing the humidity?

Does anybody else cringe when "callus over" is mentioned? This Term is so widely used in our plant community though it is extremely misleading.. Callus are plant cells that can cover the wound of a LIVING plant eg. the mother plant. There they can be used for tissue culture. They very rarely occur on cuttings (that are kind of in an undead state until roots are forming). What we call callus over is simply drying the ends. No fancy term, just drying. 😉 Everybody in doubt, google "plant callus" and See for yourself. Lots of Love and happy propagating ❤🌱

With open bins, you can put Glad Press N Seal on it and poke a few hole for airflow. You can water through the holes too!

turns out that leaving the long internodes on each side helps it root and sprout faster, give it a try :)

Like sphagnum moss, is tree fern also good to use as a “between material” when transitioning from water to a substrate?
I've never tried that personally but I think it would work!
