Whats your favorite Gundam??
My favorite Gundam huh..... out of the ones I have built, i would have to say it's my first PG (perfect grade): The 00 Gundam Seven Sword/G from Gundam 00. Which I came to learn never left the damn hanger in the anime. But of all gunpla, built or not, I really don't have one.
Wing Gundam, RX-78-2 Gundam and Gundam Barbatos.

@@Sctvita Hmm... I have yet to build any of those kits. Though they are now on my to build list. Well, probably except the Barbatos. Some one I know loves it and has even made a four-legged version we named the "Cen-taros".

Got the pg wng zero custom, never regretted anything more in my life.
It was the real deal but it felt worse than a bootleg, fitting was crap, every screw was either too large or small for its hole, the led was burnt and despite having one of the best inner frames in all gunpla the outer armor looked like a scaled up hg.
When it comes to gunpla unless you got mad customizing skills never go vintage.

How long did it take to build?
I have it and I’m halfway done it takes from what I’ve heard about a half a week
I've made models a lot as a child and the thing that absolutely astonished me about Gunpla is how extremely cheap it is and the quality. For sometimes less than a 4th of what a standard Western military kit or something more expensive like Warhammer you get a kit that is pre-colored, has amazing detail almost always including clear parts and stickers, and can actually move and hold it's pose. And they're pretty simple to assemble. It's amazing and compared to all other models it's almost unbelievable that they can do this, it has opened up model making for me again in a new way since I have less time and energy than I did as a kid and I also need my money for other things now. It's kinda hard to go back to regular kits now that my eyes have been opened by Gunpla.

I confess: As a kid I thought Gundam was the greatest s***.
So I watched both seasons of IBO last year, at the age of 35.
I was such an idiot.
Now I own 10+ Gunpla kits and build them regularly, even with my kids, having so much fun and enjoying the hobby.
I'm even playing them as miniatures in Andrea Sfiligoi's "Samurai Robots Battle Royale" (which works pretty well and pretty near to the anime, btw.).
So so glad that I changed my mind. By trying it out and leaving my prejudices behind.
I'm starting to watch IBO again, but with my wife... and she thought Gundam was the greatest s***, seeing me building up all these kids toys...
We have finished the 4th episode by now and she asks so many questions about the characters... and she seems to like it.

My story of being an idiot. I have already watched several Gundam series when SEED came out. Now, it has it's fair share of flaws. But the opening scene, when the pod drops and GINNs come out of it, in my opinion, is one of the most beautifully animated sequences in Gundam. Pitty, the rest of SEED wasn't on the same level of quality. Anyway, GINN was the very first MS that made me think "gee, i wonder if there is a model of it?" Over 13 years later i have over 50 Gunpla (never bothered to count) and i think i possibly probably might have an addiction.

I come from a 40k background too. I need to pain tho. I wanna get into this but it seems gunpla hobbyists rarely paint or even weather. They dont know what greenstuff is lol.
Quattro 4 I believe you haven’t delved into gunpowder enough, the appeal of gunpla is not building them, it’s customizing them and making them our own
I mean the nice thing about Gunpla and what astonished me when I got into it is how insanely cheap it is. For the same price as one single squad of Warhammer 40K dudes you can get a small army of HG models. And the quality is so far beyond anything I have experienced in Western models, I can definitely see how it encourages heavy customization because if you mess up or don't like the end result you can just get a new one for almost nothing.
Yet, Crunchyroll still doesn't have the majority of what Gundam is known for.
The guy in the video is definitely a fan, but crunchyroll definitely made this just for views. I saw them reply to a comment saying they didnt know about the "Grandpa Gundam" nickname for the RX-78
@@firstlast6437 It's the difference between corporate and individual employees, Crunchyroll is first and foremost a corporation that only cares about making money but this man and maybe the editors are probably big Gundam fans themselves.
Gundam is my all time favorite franchise/anime franchise. Without Gundam modern anime would never be as it is today. Always respect your elders folks.

The closest Ive come to kit-bashing was that I lost a piece and made a substitute from a spare piece of another kit
And to this day, all the builders that I know, including myself, and possibly hundreds to thousands more, always refer to the RX-78-2 GUNDAM (as seen today in this video), piloted by Amuro Ray, as the "THE GRANDDADDY GUNDAM".

To anyone looking for recommendations, the HG RX-78-2 revive shown in the video is a great kit for beginners and just a great kit overall. I would also really recommend the RG Unicorn (any of them) for a more complex build.
Probably the easyest hg is the GM I (also one of the cheapiests).
I love the RX-78-2 model! We sell them on the Crunchyroll store and having a sale right now. I dropped a link in the description of anyone wants one! They're around $10 right now

I think I'd actually suggest a MG to people before a RG, considering real grade is just master grade in 1/144...those parts are so damn tiny! Maybe the Unicorn is easier than the RX-78-2 or Char's Zaku II, but those decals still give me nightmares, lol.
Got a bit ambitious for my first Gunpla and got a RG RX-78-2, have the legs and waist unit done and working on the chest and such tomorrow, going to go lite on the decals cause my hand and tools ain't steady enough yet

The film trilogy remove a lot of the silly moments and toy commercial episodes that don't fir in a serious war drama and makes the pacing faster, but it also removes some character development and even entire popular characters.
There's a lot of debate on watching the series vs the movies. I'd say give the first few episodes of the series a chance, but if you find the pacing too slow or just don't like it, then drop it and try the movies instead.

It wasn't that Wing was well advertised, it's that Wing was the first Gundam series that was released in the US.

Thank you for the video. I've been wanting to put one of these together but I missed this wave in the 80s for several reasons.
You did a great job of explaining the basics of this hobby and gave great references to other resources.
I've never done anything related to gunpla before in my life, but this video has been a wonderful learning experience! Thank you for all of the basic, but highly detailed information about this hobby! I might consider picking up a kit where ever I see one next! Great job!
"Get your favorite, or collect them all." Don't knock the Gundam Wing commercial, it made me WANT Gunpla! It was great because as a gamer in rural country my mother wanted me to have a hobby that didn't involve staring at a screen all day so when I told her I wanted to get into model kits she said she would buy me one whenever I finished one. I began going through Gundam Wing kits so fast she amended the rule to one a week and when she realized they were $20 each for the High Grades she said ok you can use your own money now!

gunpla in itself is pretty affordable, the shipping cost is what kills it, shipping can cost half if not more then the kit itself lol
Aand that's why you alaways buy in bulk. Even better if you get your friends on board so you can split the shipping fees.
Save up, chose a handful of kits and dont get ripped off.
I usually buy from hobby link japan, they get you the kit at lower than its price and are honest about shipping, not like that "have a 50€ kit for 80€+ shipping" crap you get on ebay.

Love how you were building while explaining, enjoyed the hell out of this video. My fav has to be the Universal Century, and specially the Zeon MS, and more specifically, the all mighty MS-09 Dom.
its amazing how much gunpla has advanced over the years. HG's have so much articulation and the color separation on the parts is great, just a little bit of panel lining after snapping them together and you got yourself a great looking gundam. Building a kit today feels like you are building a action figure
I bought a Tallgeese II and was given 3 other model kits, 2 of them master grade. 12 years later, I am finally building them. 2 down, 2 to go. I can't believe I've had these boxes in my display cabinet for over 12 years and have not started building them until April 2019 :)
I grew up obsessed with Gunpla. I am considering entering into that competition as I have a wide variety in my collection of gunpla some of which I've had to mold recolor and move to make completely new original kits. It's been something close to my heart. And honestly watching this video gave me newfound hope for this idea to become a reality. Late to the video but inspirational all the same.
My first Gunpla was a Master Grade RX-78 GPO2A. It took me a while, but from then on, I was hooked.
I still have a Perfect Grade Wing Zero Custom in the box mainly because I've never had the time and/or space to lay every thing out properly.
I'm one of those fans that helped drive Gundam Wing's gunpla sales... way back in like 2000 where I had to go to a specialty shop 1hr away in the metropolitan American Midwest. It still BLOWS MY MIND to see these in mainstream bookstores now. And thank goodness because it was a pain in the ass to get it 20 years ago lmao
One thing this video doesn't mention is that another thing that allowed the series to get back on the air is the female fanbase. The original airing of Gundam wasn't very popular with kids, but it became popular with adult women in the reruns, and those fans had enough interest to keep the series going in the gap between the clover toys and the new bandai toys, and those bandai toys got kids interested. It was those two things together that led to Zeta Gundam.
Not to mention the massive outpouring of people who showed up for the announcement of the first Gundam festival. Gundam is part of the reason why cosplay is as huge as it is today, for that matter.
So that explains that one Twitter post of the Japanese girlfriend who wouldn't stop gushing about Char to her boyfriend at JP McDonald's

This was spot on. I got the itch to build again while watching Iron Blooded Orphans. Although I had built some when I was younger from Gundam Wing and G Gundam, it had been a long time. Putting together Barbatos all these years later was very enjoyable.

One of the great parts about GunPla it can also serve as an entry way into other model kits, when I was building my Gundam Models my Grandfather had no Idea what I was doing, bur when I was building a Model P-47 Thunderbolt, he would tell me all his old stories from when he had been stationed at an Air Field as a Medic during WWII, some my models may have broke or been lost over the years but I'll always have those memories.

When Gundam wing 1st aired, that got me into gunpla. Built a few HG and MG kits long ago. Got the itch last year and started buying RG and MG kits again. Never knew how much I missed building gunpla.
Really great & informative building. At Flynn's (Margate, Fl) we have Build & Paint Night every Thursday @ 8 PM. It's an awesome time for all of us builders to come together & just have a great time. Thank you again for the video. Lastly, my favorite Gundam is RX-78-2 :) Happy Building
You're content is literally the best.
If I was to recommend a starting gunpla for a beginner, it would mostly depend on what that beginner wanted out of the build experience, and their budget.
But for most, anything from the HG Revive line is a good start, as they are designed for a streamlined, simplified build with a great level of detail, parts separation, and articulation. They even come with clear plastic pieces for the eyes, and the option to use the eye stickers if you want. The HG Revive RX-78-02 Gundam in this video is a great example.
For those with a higher budget, there are some MG kits that are simple and straightforward enough that beginners could make them their first gunpla with relative ease. This includes the 'Gundam the Origin' version of the RX-78-02, as well as the 2.0 and 3.0 versions of same. Depends on which weapons suit your tastes the best, and whether you want to have the Core Fighter included. The GM Sniper II and the Jegan are also similarly straightforward models without crazy gimmicks, backpacks, or an overwhelming arsenal. They even contain parts from the Gundam builds -- because, and you will quickly find this out, Bandai absolutely loves to reuse their molds, and will do so even for a single part on a runner, rather than creating a new mold for a new runner with just the parts you need for a given model. Which means you often end up paying for plastic you don't use. Not immediately, anyway. You can always save those parts for a kitbash.

I was going to comic shops in the early and late '90s buying gundam and macross model kits. I remember when wing came out in the states and was able to buy gunpla in toys r us and building became normal. I was so happy and had a ton of kits people had never seen until years after.

It's a real shame it isn't as popular over here in the UK, fortunately I do know a store that sells Gunpla but it's only a small amount and they're slowly replacing them all with transformer models

0083 is by far my favorite series with 08thms team in a close second, damn i wish they would do a perfect grade gp-03 with the mobile armor. Great video!
The HG Sandrock Custom will always have a place one my heart. My dad got it for me on a trip overseas, it was the first Gundam kit I've built. Sadly I don't have that original one anymore, but that particular kit will always be special for me even if I like other designs or kits more.

Mobile fighter G Gundam for me mainly because it's the only Gundam show I've seen I am in love with the burning Gundam.
That model kit on his desk is my first ever gundam model kit
Out of all of gundam my top 5 are iron blooded orphans, wing, stardust memory, 00, and seed(not destiny)
We need more Gundam on crunchy roll, UC especially
I just finished my first build, I’ll admit I still haven’t watched one of the shows but building that first kit helped so much with my anxiety, I can just sit and work on my model and let the world go past me for a few hours
