What a beautiful quilt. I like your idea of making sample blocks. I use the tape trick on my rulers too. I recently made a bunch of HST’s. I found if I put the straight side of the triangle along a line on my cutting mat then it’s easy to cut perpendicular at the corners to remove the dog ears before I open it and press it. Thanks for so many good tips.
beautiful quilt and great tips! I also make test blocks but I usually write down the dimension and cutting directions on scraps of paper. Then when I go to make them at a later date I have the block but have to redo the measurements. Genius idea to write on the fabric and keep it with the sample! simply genius. I could copy by measuring a picture, but couldn't see that in the word pattern. (Hope that makes sense) I hope that your channel grows to what you want it to be. ❤❤❤
That is a beautiful pattern, and I love the fabric you used with it. Great directions too! I haven't made HSTs that way too because of the bias, but like others have said, it doesn't look like it caused problems for youl.
I do all my HST's the same way. I super glued a porcelain drawer pull to the center of my 6" square ruler which makes flipping to make the opposite cuts very easy. This allows one handed operation of the ruler.
Wow what a beautiful quilt thank you for the great tips I have just subscribed and will be checking out all your other tutorials Hi from Western Australia 💙
This quilt is one of the most beautiful that I have ever seen!! And you are one of the most awesome instructors I have ever seen!! Thank you very much!! I think I figured out you need 6 3/4 yard of each print and background. I will take that up to 7 yards of each to allow for squaring as I cut the strips. If this is incorrect, I hope you or someone else will correct me! Thanks again!!
You are so sweet! 🥹 Thank you very much! I ordered approximately 1 yard of each of the 10 different fabrics of the Batik colors and had a bolt of black fabric. I had about a quarter or so of a yard each remaining of the batik’s and plenty of the black remaining. If you use the strip cutting method I used in the tutorial, you will not need to square up your HST’s! It is fabulous! I hope this information is helpful and I wish you all the best on your quilt. Please let me know if you have any questions. 😊❤️🌺🩷🌸
Beautiful project. Test blocks are a must. To get a gang of blocks to finish correctly using different block composition, you may need scant for one group and full for another....unless it is an oversized trim down technique (which these blocks could be easily with just smidge larger cuts). I make my block and staple it to a piece of paper on which I make my maker's notes OR I put it in a notebook. It really does help. I don't care for bias on the outside of my blocks. I think that I would employ other methods for the making of the pinwheel (Magic 8 or cutting from paired strip with a triangle ruler).
Thank you and thank you for the tips! I experimented with the Easy 8 method but had to trim down and waste a lot of fabric. I’m a big believer that bias can be our friend sometimes, as long as our irons aren’t the enemy! Lol! 😂 Thank you for watching 💙
@@OxygenFarmQuilts a correct measure for magic 8 trims slivers which I don't consider wasted fabric. I don't consider bias a friend except for binding that depends on it for curves or in doing curved piecing. I know some use it on outside.
I do the same thing. My quarter inch is slightly more generous than others. I never by kits, as some are precut, or they give you just enough fabric, not enough to correct any errors. So, I watch a tutorial and get the idea. I know how large one square will be, so the others will match. I make my "prototype" for my example AND to keep in my pattern folder what the name is, this is the block, a few instructions, but enough information to look up tutorials if needed. I've not bought a pattern for anything I sew, bags, quilts, zip pouches, even rice bags and jar openers, bowl Cozies and Amish Stars. I've made so many of them, I think I could/have done them in my sleep. It all comes from my prototype. You change colors and it looks totally different. Hence the prototype... it's like a black and white example, clear as can be, exactly what to make. You can adjust the sizes if needed by looking at my example. 😊❤
Hello, I love this quilt, the black background makes these colors pop. Thank you for showing us your way of doing HST’s. I am going to make this quilt. What size did this quilt finish at?
Hello and thank you! This girl is a King size 😊💙You can check the description box below the video for details on measurements and such. I hope it is helpful!
I have never seen HST done this way before and I think its brilliant. Do you have a formula for determining the size os strips to make different suze HST? ie.. 2 1/2" HST starting suze for strips? Thank you so much for sharing. I cant wait to give it a try
Thank you so much! My 2 1/2” strips gave me 3” HST’s and can be used for 2 1/2” HST’s as well. I tend to have a hefty quarter inch seam allowance so making a sample strip is really helpful. I hope this answers your question, but please let me know if you have any additional questions. Happy sewing! 💙🫶🏼🧵
Thank you so much for your reply. Couldn't figure out the math ?(I'm sure if I refresh my geometry I could figure something out) so I took a price of paper and drew and that worked. I also made a practice HST. I'm the past I've done the 8 @ a time HST but I think I might like this method more. I am putting together and finishing a quilt top for a friend and I'm really excited to try this method. Thanks again for sharing. I love to learn new ways to accomplish things.
You are so very welcome! I was terrible at geometry! Lol and I’m a quilter!! 😂🤣 So practice and sample pieces work for my mind 😁 Great idea about using paper! All the best to you ❤️
Hello and thank you for your question! I am not a pattern writer but I hope the following is helpful- I ordered a yard of each Batik and there were 10 colors. I believe I have about a half yard of each leftover. I had a bolt of Kona black and there’s definitely leftover of that as well. 😁 I am so terrible at figuring these things out! 😂 That’s why I always order way too much and am not a pattern writer 🤣 BUT it gives me enough for a bonus project Lol I hope this helps a little bit! Thank you and Happy sewing! 🧵 🫶🏼💙😊
New subscriber ✨thank you so much for a great video. Are you using 1/4 yard pieces of fabric so you can get length of fabric or can you also use fat quarters to make smaller tubes? Really like this way to make HST’s…..Can’t wait to make a practice block 🎉🥰😂
Yay! Thank you for subscribing! I am glad you are here. 😊 I used width of fabric yardage, but I have also used this same technique with scrap yardage, as well as fat quarters. I love that you are going to make a sample block! It has truly made a difference for me since I have such a hefty seam allowance. 😂 All the best to you with your Quilt! 😍❤️🌺

@@OxygenFarmQuiltscan you explain how you figure how wide to cut your strips. I loved your video with so many ideas. I have trouble with hst and want to try this technique
Hello and thank you for your question. I started with two 2 1/2 inch strips from scrap or ‘not so pretty fabric’ 😁 I put right sides together and sewed down both sides of the strip. When that was done, I used the technique in the video with lining up on the stitch line. Typically, what I found was I could get 2 to 3 different sizes of HST’s from one size of strip. I put notes directly on the fabric and saved it as a sample strip. I did this with a few different sizes of strips and made notes on each. I hope this helps and I wish you happy sewing your HST’s 🤗❤️🌸

That's how I learned to do hst's.
It’s fantastic!! 😁🌺
Wow what a beautiful quilt thank you for the great tips I have just subscribed and will be checking out all your other tutorials Hi from Western Australia 💙
Hello from Nebraska, USA and welcome! I appreciate you for subscribing and your kind words! 😄🫶🏼❤️
Thank you,
You are welcome! Thanks for watching 💙
Спасибо огромное у нас в Белоруссии печворк не развит из за ткани, нет такого изобилия цветов и качества. Очень люблю вас смотреть❤❤❤❤
I’m glad you are here! Thank you for watching! ♥️😊❤️
I love all the different ways of doing things in quilting. I appreciate your ideas. Thank you for sharing with us. 😊
@@OxygenFarmQuilts Lots of ways to skin the quilt cat. Love your sharing of your beautiful makes.
Lol, so true! All the best to you 💙
I do the same thing. 😊❤
Thank you for your feedback! The samples are so very helpful 😊 All the best to you 🌺❤️
Hello, I love this quilt, the black background makes these colors pop.
All the best to you ❤️
I love this quilt! Can you tell us how much fabric you needed for it?
In love with this quilt !!! ❤ I need to make a king, how much of each color fabric do I need. Is there a pattern somewhere I need to purchase?
Hello! Welcome to my channel and thank you for your questions. 😊 I am not a pattern writer but please take a look in the Description Box below the video tutorial. I give all of the free details of this Quilt, which is a King size. I hope this helps you with your Quilt! Happy sewing! 😁🌺🫶🏼
This is a great way of doing HSTs, but we just have to careful because all the edges are on the bias.
Thank you! ☺️
How many colors and yardage? I love it!!

@@OxygenFarmQuilts oh thank you That's exactly how I buy fabric! I make quilt tops for a quilt shop and she lets me keep the left over fabric! I just finished a batik quilt top for her and have quite a bit of fabric left!! Love it! Thanks for the info it helped a lot!!
Oh my goodness! You are making us quilters drool 🤤 😂 with thinking about the fabrics you get. That’s so cool you do that for your quilt shop! Glad the info was helpful! 😊🫶🏼💙
Great way to make HST's Do you have a chart for the cutting of the sizes of the strips and what size square they become? Your quilt is beautiful!!
I appreciate that! I’m not a pattern writer so I don’t have a chart. I have plans on experimenting with different sizes for other projects so be on the lookout for that 😊 Thank you so much! ☺️ 🫶🏼❤️
Can a clearly slotted perfect trimmer ruler work? I use mine quite often.
Hello and thank you for your question. I don’t have one of those to see for sure, but I think it would 😊
