    I dub my docs soon as I get them, helps smooth the leather. I use a thin layer because that's what it says to use on the jar.

    I have these exacts boots... DO NOT use dubbin on them. I followed this video, got some dubbin, applied it as per the videos instructions.... it totally changed the colour and finish of the crazy horse leather.
    Also got the 1460s in crazy horse & learnt all you need to do to maintain this kind of leather is wipe it with a damp cloth to clean them up... and apply a good quality leather conditioner SPARINGLY once in a while when you notice the leather becoming dry.
    Hopes this helps someone else avoid ruining their boots haha.

      I have this exact boot. And they get scuffed regularly. The dubbing protects the leather. And yes it goes a bit darker, but worth it to protect the leather.

    Other recommendations suggest rubbing the dubbin in then waiting 30 mins then a good rub down with a cloth, otherwise dust and dirt just attracts the boot..

  • @foxo4992
    @foxo4992 2 ปีที่แล้ว +98

    I cringed when I saw it being slathered on like that. You’re supposed to use it extremely sparingly, or the leather becomes so softened that it is weakened. It is almost as if Doctor Martens don’t care about our potentially having to buy tonnes of dubbin and prematurely wearing out our Docs! ;)

    • @MrSuvvri
      @MrSuvvri ปีที่แล้ว +15

      its win-win for them: more shoe care products sold and more boots sold aswell haha

    • @frankyramone
      @frankyramone ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So the leather keeps its strength if you use it sparingly? You only risk more damage by using more? I just got some Doc Martens for the first time and am wondering about the treatment process.

    • @foxo4992
      @foxo4992 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@frankyramone well, I’m not an expert, but I’ve read in various places that dubbin can decondition the leather if used regularly in excess - I’m guessing it gets oversaturated, and thus oversoftened? I would use it occasionally (opinion varies on how often, but I do about once a month), and a thin layer is all you need - just as long as you can see you’ve applied it to an area, that is enough - you’re not putting buttercream on a cake. Also, wonder balsam is good to keep the leather soft, and prevent cracking. I had a pair of Docs for years that I never bothered to treat, because I thought it wouldn’t make a difference, but it did, and the leather is now quite cracked in places. So, I’d say definitely don’t overdo, but underdoing could be even worse.
      Also, as others have commented, do NOT use dubbin on the type of leather shown in the video.

      If it has petroleum like kiwi products then it will decondition and ruin the leather over time. Saphir brand polish is a better choice.

      Are they a dyed leather or are they an oiled or waxed leather? If they are dyed, then you can use a simple spray protectant which shouldn't darken them or change the color. If they are waxed or oiled then you want to identify the appropriate protectant from the available Dr. Martens products and use it as directed.

      @benjamindavis8906 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This comment is about a year too late but I hope it helps somewhat still. Dubbin is different than mink oil. Wonder Balsam is more comparable. Dubbin is used mainly to waterproof the boot, but isn't that good at moisturizing the leather (only using dubbin will actually shorten the lifespan of the boot). Wonder Balsam and mink oil helps get that moisture back into the boot but again, shouldn't be used too much because if the leather is too soft it will destroy itself faster. Using a good balance of both will give you the best results for the boot.
