  • A fantastic evening session spent at the incredible station of Zurich in Switzerland, just about every service you could think of serves this station, it's one of the biggest and busiest I've ever been to. And certainly one that I would come back to at some stage.
    The first station in Zurich was built by Gustav Albert Wegmann on what was at the time the northwestern edge of the city, the station was situated on a stretch of land between two different rivers, the Limmat and the Sihl. The trains accessed the station via a bridge that ran over the River Sihl. The eastern side of the station had a turntable which was used to turn the locomotives around at the station. It stayed this way for 143 years.
    A new station was built and opened in 1847 by the Swiss Northern Railway, this was also a terminus station.
    The lines in the station were set to a gauge of 5ft 3 but they were eventually re-done to standard gauge 4ft 8 1/2 to accommodate the vastly growing Swiss rail network and the need to match up with what was happening throughout Europe.
    The station was once again redesigned in 1871 due to the fact that the original station could no longer cope with the growing demand of passengers and rail traffic coming into the station.
    The station was officially named Zurich Hauptbahnhof in 1893 and it remained that way ever since. In 1902 the Swiss Federal Railways took over operations from the local operator at the time and then set about changing some of the themes of the station, the eastern side of the station had it tracks lifted and the terminus tracks were situated elsewhere. The North shed had 4 more tracks installed with a new restaurant and rail mail service. The vacant space inside the shed made way for a new baggage hall.
    In 1916 the SBB decided that the rail network in Zurich and the surrounding area should be electrified and in 1923 the Zug - Zurich line became the first one to be electrified in Zurich and eventually all lines coming into and out of the station were electrified in 1927.
    By 1960 the majority of the Swiss network was fully electrified which meant that they could introduce a Four-system electric current on its trains which meant that they could introduce the Trans Europe Express title to some of their trains meaning that Zurich was starting to garner more importance as an International station.
    Over the next 20 years the station and surrounding area went through several changes with a pedestrian area built to the main entrance and a shopping center built on the lower level, there was also the Zurich S-Bahn that had been built, there was never a U-Bahn system built although plans had been made for it.
    During the 2000s the station was again given some work for additional tracks and the lower level being widened for the S-Bahn to get more traffic.

    Zurich is heaven as a railfan. Bierwerk Zuri is a brewery with American IPAs with a view of all tracks heading out of Zurich HBF. Made my girl go there 3 times when we were there in May hahahaha. The RaBe 502 Twindexx trains might by my favorite in the world.

      And if you get tired of the action above ground, there are underground platforms for through trains

    I've only visited Zürich HB a couple of times. But it is by far one of my favourite stations to watch trains at. München HBF isn't far behind!

    Quite possibly the best all passenger upload to date. Great variety, not only in the types of train sets, but the formations too. Liked the quaint two-car set. This brought back some memories. I was at Zurich back in September 1993 as part of a week's holiday travelling on Swiss railways. One day I'll return.

      That's very kind of you to say, I've been watching this station on a live cam for quite some time now and have always wanted to get a film done from there as it looked like such great fun, I never really appreciated just how big and busy it was until I got there. You really need to have your wits about you when you are filming here as there is so much to be seen.

    I think some of those trains, the reason they have the single level and dual level cars is for ski season so they can use the single level car is at the rear as a place to put all the skis

      Ski season in 30+ degree heat isn't something I would fancy doing

    Another amazing video from your European trip,these Austrian german French Swiss and Italian locos and rolling stock make the UK look like a museum of dullness,did you have any problems filming

      UK trains are so behind the rest of Western Europe, it's not even funny anymore. It feels like a 3rd world country sometimes when it comes to railways.

      Thanks very much, throughout my entire holiday I had no issues with filming at any station. The Europeans have such a relaxed approach to people filming on stations compared to the UK

    Can you see double deckers ever being deployed in the UK,and what are fares like in the region you filmed at

    • @davidfinch5062
      @davidfinch5062 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is unlikely due to the restrictive UK loading gauge.

    • @Tornado922
      @Tornado922  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The loading gauge in the UK wouldn't allow it, plus you've got all the bridges and tunnels to try and contend with. In regards to the rail fares I found them to be very reasonable for the journeys that I was doing.
