    Follow this magical summertime train trip though the Swiss and Italian Alps on high speed rail between Zurich and Milan. This STUNNING journey can be had for as little as 43 Euro in second class and 70 Euro in first class... it has been a while since I posted a train video, so I hope you enjoy this one!

    Fantastic video! The name Zug comes from the latin word tugium which means Zug in German, Zug as the noun of ziehen, which means to pull. Of course, the word is also related to train, because the locomotive pulls the waggons. But here, the town is situated on a lake and so, Zug means since long ago Fischzug, draught of fish. The fisherman pulls the fishing net out if the lake. I hope, my explication was a little bit understandable, unfortunately, my English is not so good.

    • @redwillrise
      @redwillrise 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sorry but there's a small, but important error here: Zug doesn't come from latin tugium, it has the same root as Latin tugium. But they developed independently from each other, starting from the same origin.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@redwillrise From my understanding, "zug" does mean to pull, such as a horse pulling a wagon or a fisherman pulling a net out of the water, which is related to the town because both those things were common in the town therefore named same name before trains existed. And then later, "zug" also did come to also mean an engine pulling a train down the tracks. And to my knowledge, "Zug" and "tug", the English word for pull, did both stem from Latin tugium, but then yes they did develop independently from each other

    • @redwillrise
      @redwillrise 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@alvexok5523 No, that's where you are wrong: "to tug", but also the German verb "ziehen" oder the noun "Zug" aren't derived from Latin "tugium", they're rather cousins so to speak - they all ultimately derive from the Indo-European root "*deuk-" from which both the Latin amd Germanic forms would emerge, independently of each other. Germanic languages don't descend from Latin, but Germanic languages and Latin are both descendants of an earlier common ancestor.

    • @alvexok5523
      @alvexok5523 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redwillrise Oh. Well, that was just what I had read before, but I suppose that the writers of that source were mistaken by thinking that since "zug" and "tug" both mean to pull, then both words must be derived from "tugium". It's probably been a common error to jump to that conclusion, but I now do see your point on the relation to the German term "ziehen" and how German and Latin forms developed independently of each other, and I do recall having read about that now that you've mentioned it

      I agree, and trains are amazing. However, you do have to remember that America is twice as big and half as populated at Europe, so the density is 4x less than Europe which makes the economics trickier. That said, regional rail in the north east, Florida south coast, califor a coast, etc should definitely be better than they are

    • @TheRailwayDrone
      @TheRailwayDrone 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@anthonydpearson I REALLY wish people would stop using that excuse. We can have city pairs that can be connected. We can have rail corridors that are just like the northeast corridor. There are certain places in this country which are heavily populated that can benefit from high speed railways. That is evidenced by the endless traffic jams that take place all over many of our interstate highways. So no, I don't ascribe to that idea that the U.S. is half as populated as Europe and therefore, shouldn't have high speed rail.

    To make this quick trip in winter is a great way to see the difference in climate on either side of the Alps. It's never been so cheap, fast and comfortable. In February, Zurich can be gloomy and snowy while Lugano and Milan bask in a California climate.

      I'm not sure its faster to go by plane anyway. By the time you get to the airport, check in, board, offload the other end and get back out it can take hours - way more if its delayed as they often are.
      Train stations tend to be much easier to get to and have none of the check in, boarding and so on delays.
      I've been to some airports where the bus from the car park is every half an hour and takes that half an hour going around all the carparks before heading to arrivals.
      I've also never had a 3 hour wait from check in for a train.

    • @dennisroyhall121
      @dennisroyhall121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@siraff4461 : Agreed! I reckon a very valid route comparison including total net fares, total distance covered by transport entities and net time taken from start to stop journey’s end is one that begins and ends at city centre pick up points which give a much fairer assessment of rail travel. The basic fundamentals are what you pay for what you get and what you get is what the carrier has to provide ie land or air coverage in discounted by shortest time they’re able to do it in to wit distance discounted by fare times time taken ie travelling passenger forfeits his time and his fares for which he receives carriage over distance. The carrier’s gain is fares for which it expends carriage over distance and time also. Here time factors cancel each other out the longer time taken the relative greater the charge for both parties. Not so for tourist journeys where the longer journey meaning greater pleasure to the tourist for greater cost, to greater earnings against relatively greater expense borne by the carrier.

Every taxi was a newer Mercedes and it seemed like every other store was a jewelry or high end watch store. It was expensive and had vending machines that sold almost everything from food to clothing...I don't think we have anything to match even today.....hope it is still some semblance to what it was...look forward to getting to visiting again. Don't get me started on Milan...Madonn'

      Wealth, efficiency and technology is a great summary but don't forget cleanliness. A good exemple of rail technology & efficiency is Lausanne driverless M2 metro. After adjustment for inflation, cost was $109 million/km. Using less efficient classical signals, New York Second Ave phase 2 extension should carry twice as many riders but is projected to cost $6300 million. That is $2625 million/km, 24 times as much as in Lausanne but significant cost overruns are likely.

    Swiss trains are definitely the best in the world, especially when the train is Italian and the food is Italian too! 😀

    The Gotthard Basistunnel ( base tunnel) is, with its 57km, still the longest railway Tunnel in the world.
    After completition the Austrian Brenner Basistunnel ( which actually consists of two separate tunnels) will officially be the longest tunnel in the word. However that is not one railway tunnel but two, of which one was pre existing.

    I done this route Back in 2019 from Milan with some friends friends on an interrail trip we had to pay a Suplimet I think it was €10 each a few days earlier we got the Slow train from Bern to Domodossola we hand nearly an hour until our next train so we went into town and found a lovely Cafe and had an early lunch befor continuing our journey to Milano and the next day we got the train to Lake Como (Town) later I found out Como has two Stations! I hope to do another interrail soon top western Italian cost.

    It's good to see you finally coming back to covering Train trips once again! The airline trips are not usually anywhere near as interesting. Except for the scenery, if you have been on one airline in coach class you have usually been on them all. Having travelled "sardine class" many a time, I find little difference between most air flights. With Business class on airlines running 3 times or more then coach class, not many can afford to travel business or first class. I hope you continue covering more Train trips in the future. My wife also greatly likes those as well!

    The through trains at Zürich don't reverse. There are loads of platforms dedicated for this under the main conccourse (e.g., platforms 31-34 and 41-44)

    If you are interested in the „Kontrollstelle“ in Zurich, then you might also be interested in the „Zentrallstellwerk“ in Basel. It is one of the first buildings planed and consctructed by the architects Herzog & De Meuron, who later became famous with countless buildings worldwide like „the nest“ for the Peking Summer Olympics, but also for controversial projects like the Opera in Hamburg - BEAUTIFUL, but three times over budget …

    As an Italian is always a pleasure see your review about an Italian product.
    Anyway you where also lucky to find the restaurant coach open: until recent they were closed for the Pandemic (although the prices were very Swiss for an Italian train 😂).
    I hope you will also have the possibility to try the Frecciarossa and Italo

    I travel by Amtrak between San Diego, Los Angeles & Oxnard, CA. It beats driving & riding on buses. Flying is a hassle & drudgery when flying domestically in the United States. I enjoy looking at the scenery when I travel by train & also read when it’s night before I go to sleep on the train.
