    Angela, to keep your scraps perfectly organized, you just send them to me and your quilt room stays super clean! lol! Loved your feathered star, that seems beyond me still, but maybe! I would spend more time eating those M&M's than piecing! Thank you so much for the great tutorial and giggles, you are amazing!

    My first and still only quilt, made for my daughter, is a pattern of yours. You’re a joyful person and you make fun n easy everything you do! Here in Italy we don’t have the same quilting tradition as you. So I learned from you all, the best teachers we can find on web. Just Thank You!! 💕

    Hi, Angela! I always look forward to Wednesdays! Gotta say, that feathered star by Edyta Star is gorgeous and you break down the hard stuff and make it look doable. I'm tempted, but too many UFO's right now! I have 6 deep clear stacking bins with locking lids. Labeled 1.5", 2.5", 3.5", 5", and 7" squares; the last one is for 2.5" strips. That's it! Works great.

    I have a friend that I give my scraps to that makes postage stamp quilts. I kind of think she's a little crazy sewing 1-1/2" pieces together but, hey, they all turn out beautiful and she's happy and I'm happy. Love how your feathered star quilt turned out. All my favorite fabrics!

    Like you, I have never been to a retreat either. I have that as one of my new goals. We have just experienced Hurricane Harvey and while my family was truly blessed many others faced total loss. My quilt guild is making quilts for children whose families are struggling to recover from the storm. This week we all gathered and made jelly roll quilts to be distributed to families in need. I believe the tool bag would come in so handy for such gatherings. So many people showed up to help and space was at a premium. The tool kit would certainly help keep all my supplies in one space and not take up much room.

    Hi Angela. I absolutely love your tutorials. With my scraps I like to make throw pillows, pillow cases or shams, tablerunners, placemats, napkins, or even a pieced backing. That way whatever the project is, it will have its matching accessories.

    What a gorgeous quilt. Still super daunting though- all those marching points are what nightmares are made of. One day.
    I keep my scraps in clear boxes on a shelf in my storage room. Okay. It’s a shelf unit but hey. They’re organized by colour. I like using them to experiment with new techniques, block design, practice blocks and the like. When a block is done, I put it in a separate bin and slowly sew those blocks together to make scrappy quilts that remind me of old projects. They’re like memory quilts.
    I don’t like wasting and these are a great way to do that. I’ve also toyed with the ideas of using my scraps to make smaller projects like journal covers. Then it also feels like I’m getting more done lol.

    I organize my scraps by each bright idea I have, meaning the bottom of my container actually makes sense, but the top reflects more of an effort to clean up my quilting space and move onto a new project. Angela, thanks so much for being such an awesome young quilter! When people look at me weird for being the youngest one geeking out on quilting, I show them your videos and say, "Look! She's way weirder than I am!" Seriously, though, you're the best! Thanks for making Wednesdays the best day of the week!

      I felt like that too! Wanted to make quilts for my daughter's bunks .... 35 years ago. Always felt I would be no good at it and the desire got lost in the busyness of life. Now that I'm retired I thought "what harm can it do to give it a go? It's only remnant bin material and I don't have to show anyone if it doesn't work". Started of very simple jelly roll strip quilts backed by minky blankets for my 6 granddaughters and fell in love with the process and the result! I would never have found my hobby if I hadn't given it a "what the hell ..." go. Don't waste 35 years like I did.

    I do so enjoy your midnight quilt show! I have started sorting my scraps into two groups. One group is for me, to work on new projects with-I also make hats, wallets, & purses. The second group I save for my granddaughter for her dolls and such. She has so much fun playing with the tiny scraps and fabric I never intend to use. I'm not sure my daughter appreciates all those scraps all over her house, but I picked up a lot of tiny bits and pieces when she was young, so it's her turn. Anyway, I put small things like fat quarters in plastic storage bins in light, medium, and dark color ranges. It works pretty well for me.

  • @marthaaiken7808

    Love watching you... As for my multitude of scraps, I used my sew sampler boxes and cover with paper or fabric. Then each box has lables for sizes.....ex=1 1/2, 2, 2 1/2 , up to 8 1/2 inch blocks or strips. For things like my HST or extra blocks I use an open box to be able to get to them quickly for borders or baby quilts. We all know the scraps are usually some of our favorite fabrics, so making getting to them easy. Keep quilting and Inspiring those like myself. 🤗🤗🤗💖

  • @Gale4health
    @Gale4health 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I started with the ziplock baggie idea to sorting colours, however, I outgrew that system quickly when I inherited my mother's fabric. I now use plastic stacked drawers. I line them with aluminum foil because they are clear and the sunlight will fade the fabric. I try to keep it organized, but that only goes so far :) I love this quilt and am so glad I stumbled onto your TH-cam late one night - which seems appropriate for a Midnight Show! Thank you for keeping it real!

    I have been quilting for just over 1 year. I made 10 quilts and then as an anniversary present to myself I made a scrap quilt (named it "Year One") so I have a bit of all of them to remember. What I learned from that exercise is that going forward I will (a) cut leftover backing into strips for scrappy binding for other projects, (b) organize the remaining scraps by colour, (c) not cut scraps into preset sizes until I know what pattern I plan to use, and (d) will use more scraps and less background colour in my next scrappy quilt so I can use up more of them.

I love the fabric stores and the smell of the fabrics, all the sewing notions. Have have lots big sissors and sometimes can't even find a pair.vi got the QUILT POX virus. That's my name.

    I'm lucky enough to have a closet in my sewing room, and hang my longer strips of scraps by color on hangers. If the pieces are too small to hang - they either get cut into 2 1/2 squares and kept in a plastic bin by color, or left a bit bigger and put in a different plastic bin. SO MANY SCRAPS! Love your tutorials - and I love the feathered star, but wow does it look fussy! Thanks for making it also look doable. :)

    You are one brave woman for embarking on a pattern that can be intimidating. I am glad you persevered - you teach us all to stop being afraid of trying something new in quilting. I have a tendency to keep decent sized scraps from projects in fabric covered bins, organized by color. I find scraps are good for making baby quilts, table runners or quilted ornaments. Thanks for another great episode and it goes without saying to everyone out there: be the 'mad scientists' in your quilt lives and experiment with each quilting project!

  • @tracystrobel1065
    @tracystrobel1065 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your creative and wonderful sense of humor never disappoints.. You give all of us permission to not stress over "the perfect" seam. Thank you for that. When i am making quilts my color schemes vary so dramatically from quilt to quilt cuz I too get bored with sewing the same color so my next quilt is the total opposite color. So i sort mine in stackable plastic bins by color so next time i need a specific color no digging thru the endless scraps.. 🤗💚

    I like to make my scraps into a quilt bag the quilt goes into. The theory is that if the quilt is ever damaged, hopefully enough of the right fabric remains in the quilt's bag to repair it. Any scraps beyond that go into zip top bags by project then into a larger tub with others.

  • @mischellsmith7774
    @mischellsmith7774 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have great respect for you, you did it. I wanted to do this quilt , but not now. Way back when I got into quilting by taking a class it was the type of class that you bring your projects and your class mates help you. I talked to a few of them and decided what quilt that I wanted to do. It was a lone star. I got a pattern bought material, not the best but OK. Got some equipment, and went to class, I had read the pattern a lot so I sounded like I new what to do. They helped me cut it out and helped me start and I did. I worked on the quilt for about 3 weeks cutting, matching, pinning, sewing, unsewing , resewing , I got 4 rows done and all my free time was in that quilt. After the 3 weeks I put it in a bag in the closet and never worked on it again. Still haven't and won't. This quilt reminds me of that one so as much as I would like to do it, there is a NO WAY with it, but you did a great job on it. : ) : ] ♥♥ xoxo ps I keep my scraps in plastic storage bins arranged by colors or patterns on them, all sizes of scraps go in the box except for large enough pieces to hangup with the other fabric. Patterns are in another box, and templates have there own.

    Love. Love. Love. That you said that it wasn't perfect when the seams' points didn't line up but... "it's OK! We're gonna leave it!!" Yes!! (Uh oh. I can hear my mother saying if it's worth doing it's worth doing right!). However YOU are the instructor and she always said to follow my teachers instructions. :). ( Have to wonder what I've unknowingly put into my children's' heads to deal with their entire life long. Sigh. Wish we could take classes on being the perfect parents.). Beautiful quilt. Thanks.

    Loved that pattern....and now it is under the "to do list"....I will not live long enough to make them all! Now, for the scraps...like most, I cut into 2, 2.5, and 3....anything bigger goes with any of the yardage that may be left over and then in by color. Now the REALLY small scraps (you know the stuff you throw away, slivers from trims, etc) they go into an old pillow case....once filled, I sew up the end and it becomes a the mattress for a cat/dog beds. I make a removeable case for it and donate it to the animal shelters. I usually wait until I have around four beds before I bring them in. Love your show and the humor!

    Whoa! Hello! This is a gorgeous quilt but waaaaay above my paid grade! I think I'll stick to simpler quilts but I sure do enjoy watching your Midnight Quilt Show. I wish I was more organized with my scraps (like cutting them into strips and squares) but that ain't happening! I do, though, organize by color. Each color has a bin and they get thrown in there. Works for me! Enjoy your show and I do believe I own every one of your Craftsy classes...I'm a fan!

    Angela, this is my three year old’s favorite video on TH-cam. I’m not kidding. Every day, we read a few books and watch this video before her rest. She has it memorized. We may have skewed the “view” count because we are obviously your biggest fans. I thought you might get a kick out of that. She’ll say, “I’m my biggest fan?” or giggle and say, “It’s not going to end well,” like you do in the video. Later she’ll point to a quilt I have hanging on the wall and ask, “What ‘patter-ryn’ did you use when you made this quilt?” It can be a bit like the movie Groundhog Day but I’m thankful for the help with getting her down for a rest! Happy quilting!

    Hey Angela! Great video as usual.......as for scrap organization and storage.....I separate by crumbs, strings, and chunks, and then all of those are separated by color. I use plastic shoe boxes from bargain stores for the crumbs, a rolling drawer cabinet for the strings, and larger plastic containers for the chunks. This all fits on an industrial sized shelving unit.

    First of all, I always look forward to a new video from you. Love the way you remind us we don't have to be perfect. I am an unorganized perfectionist. Which brings me to how I "try" to organize my scraps. I have a little basket that I throw my scraps into. I also have 3 drawstring bags that I have embroidered, small, medium and large on them. When my basket is OVERFLOWING, I sort by colors and size and put them in baggies inside the small, medium and large drawstring bags that hang on a hook. LOL, I forget sometimes they are there.Thanks again!!!!!

    I have recently went through my entire sewing room and organized ALL my fabric. I had a lot more than I thought! I took wonky shaped scraps and cut them into 5in sqs, 2.5in strips, and 2.5in sqs. Anything smaller than that I didn't think I could reasonably use got thrown away (I know, it was really difficult). These 'precuts' went into their own plastic see through tubs. Fat qtrs got neatly folded and put in a see through drawer. Cuts larger than 1/4yd were put on cardboard mini bolts and are beautifully displayed on a shelves by color. I can see what I have, and am inspired every time I go in the room. Its like walking into the fabric store, only I already own everything! It took a couple weeks to do (working a few hrs every day), but was well worth it.

    What Victoria Nardone said :) - economic cutting is the way to go. When I first started quilting I took a class, instructor was terrific and showed multiple ways to cut economically. Minimal scraps. I don't keep small stuff (fraying!) and I don't cut fabric pieces any further, since I don't know in advance what sizes I will need when I use them later. I group pieces that came in a collection. I have one plastic tote with scraps, kept in a very cool space (as in chilly). Some quilt guilds/circles do swap days and have a section for scrap bags. Thank you for showing us this method for piecing this, it's going on my bucket list!

    I've been watching this kit on Craftsy. The comments there mentioned it was a bit tricky. Very helpful to see how you put it together. You do a great job with your videos. Thank you!

    I organize anything smaller than a fat quarter by size. Have started cutting some pieces into 2 1/2" squares or strips or 5 and 10" squares like the precuts. Have had to become a bit more realistic lately about just what all I was keeping and have been taking all the smaller and odd bits to the local Humane Society. They use the scraps to make dog/cat beds. Thanks for always making me smile with your videos!

    Another great episode. I have always wanted to try a feathered star and you really make it look doable. As far as organizing my scraps, I buy decorative boxes on sale at AC Moore, Michael's or Marshall's Home Goods and TJ Maxx. They look beautiful and useful. I also use plastic totes with lids to keep dust off when being stored. Happy quilting! :)

    Wow! That is a LOT of piecing! Way to go on making it look so easy!! It is beautiful! The fabrics you choose for these quilts really are inspiring! I'm playing with the idea of quilting and you make it look so easy! Would you have a suggestion on which of your quilts would be best for a beginner to try first?

    I love your enthusiasm and sense of humor! I have two large, squatty vases that I dump my scraps in - one for odd shapes and one for "to be cut" pieces. The odd shapes I use for paper piecing and the other I cut into the largest squares I can while watching TV - ie an 8" strip or piece will be cut into a 5" and a 2.5" square and the leftover goes into the paper piecing vase. I keep same size squares in tubs or shoe box w;/lid containers. When I need a quick gift, I will grab the 5" sq bin and turn it into a disappearing 9-patch. I use the 2.5" ones in pairs as the starter when I am chain piecing and will do one at the end of the chain. When all of the 2.5"s are in pairs, the I use pairs of them as a starter, turning them into 4-patches and so forth until they are the size I need. Sometimes I join strips of them with sashing from my scraps bins. Bonnie Hunter's blog got me started doing this and I've used this technique to make bags, baby quilts, table toppers and donation quilts in no time only using 2.5" squares.

    I no longer keep scraps because for me they become a forever unfinished project. What I do now is cut my scraps into 6" squares and donate them to Project Linus. So, instead of cluttering my room it all goes to a good cause. A win win!

    I love this quilt. I organize my scraps (when I get the time to do it) by putting them together in the different sizes (1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 5 &10 inch) and keep them in either a clear plastic shoe box or a bin with labels. I also do the same with strips. Then when I have enough for a quilt or I am looking for a specific sized square or strip, they are available. Keep up the great work. I look forward to Wednesdays and seeing what you have in store for us.

    I love Edyta Sitar but I don't think I'm ready for a feathered star - YIKES! Love your video and I think it's good for us to get a look at a more complicated design. Scrapes...I swear mine multiply while I'm not watching!! Generally, I organize in two ways. Some by color and others by size/shape. I have been trying to cut up my scrapes into usable shapes/sizes as soon as I complete a project but I still have plastic shoe boxes filled with colored scrapes that I should deal with. Thanks for such fun, informative videos, Angela.

    Fabulous, Angela, thanks for the video. Your attitude gives me the impetus to try to do something this complex (with all those little pieces and angles) and not worry if it's not perfect. Although yours looks terrific, even though we know one of your points was not. See? We *do* need to "get our noses out of our quilts" and enjoy the overall gorgeous effect. So enjoy watching you Angela, keep them coming! ~Diana from Toronto

    Beautiful quilt! I made a huge 3’x3’x3” canvas pillow with a zipper opening. I stuff it with the small scrap pieces and threads. My dog uses this scrappy pillow for a bed! The more scraps I have the softer the pillow.

    Your quilt is beautiful and I'm so glad that you are OK with points that don't line up perfectly. Scraps are organized by size and shape. And if I ever have a large enough space for more containers I will separate those by color (my organization OCD has not quite gotten to that point yet....lol). But you have to do what works best for you. If you're not into scrappy quilting, best way to handle them is to give them to someone who is! 😉

    I think this is my favorite quilt! Really makes me want to get to that colder weather.
    I organize my scraps by size. 2 containers. One for large pieces, and a 2nd for smaller pieces that I really don't know will ever get used but there was JUST ENOUGH that I couldn't get rid of them.

      ConnieJo Henry, I do the same and then store those in plastic crates. I always iron any new fabric, straighten it, trim and refold. I use A6 index cards on which I write the fabric details, Retailer, Designer, yardage etc and when I use it for a quilt, just jot down which project and how much remains; This means I know straightaway whether I have the yardage or not. A spreadsheet listing ALL my stash (yep it was hard work but well worth it) allows me to do a rough audition of fabrics based on quantity alone so I can quickly eliminate fabrics with insufficient yardage. I know, I know, the quilt club ladies find my OCD habits amusing 😂😂😂😂

      I don't have a big enough stash to do all that for! But I wanted to ask you something. What do ladies at quilt guilds do? Are they sewing for charity, raffles for the church, or what? I have considered joining one, but I just want to know more before I do. Thanks.

    I love the quilt! As far as organizing, I use the large plastic Pretzel jars (my M&Ms). They hold a lot of scraps. I have jelly roll leftovers, 2.5" squares, 1.5" strips, 1.5" squares, as well as left over HSTs that I cut off and save when making larger ones. I love this method of storing because I can see at a glance what is in each and if there is a color I need for a project. Thank you for your inspiration!

    Hi Angela! Personally, I use these big glass containers from WalMart. My friend got them for food, but they turned out not to be airtight, so she gave them to me. They can also double as "decoration" that way, and keep pet fur separated from your scraps. Thanks for the humor and inspiration! (And the excuse to buy a huge bag of peanut M&Ms and wine when I'm at the store!)

    Angela, I love love your midnight quilting show! You have inspired me to really take on machine quilting with a vengeance! I use clear shoebox containers to groups small scraps into colors but I also keep a laundry basket to throw any long strips into. When I get enough strips I then group them into colors but this only happens about once a year!

    Wonderful... I made the download.. will try when I get more used with triangles... :) I live in a small cottage in Germany.. So, I don´t have a lot of place to save a lot of scraps (and I have a LOT). Out the small scraps in equal shades in ziplocks bags... Then I can make some confettis patchwork and the bigger ones I put on baskets. Always separated in shades! Thanks for more one great video, Angela!

    Beautiful! I love how real you are in these videos. ("Eh, it's fine.") ;) My scraps are semi-sorted by color, but I discovered I need a better system the other night when I tried to do something with them! I do have a plastic storage box that holds my leftover 2 ½ inch strips, hopefully it will make piecing bindings easier in the future.
