As a Kiwi, I'm very sorry for your experience. However, I'm glad our Customs are on the ball. The thing is, as New Zealand is so far away, most people entering have long term holiday plans, and friends and family to meet. Someone on a short visit with not much luggage and very little money (not saying that's you but you did say you were low on funds) is very suspicious, and they do have to check you out. It is not racist, it is just your circumstances they are looking at. I just hope they were professional and polite, and I hope you enjoy your stay notwithstanding.

As I said earlier, imo that officer did what he did from a racist perspective. A bit of power-tripping too, I suspect.
Found the following about border control in NZ.
“Once the passenger has arrived at the port, Customs officers also have the opportunity to assess that person based on their physical presentation. Frontline staff visually profile arriving passengers, looking for signs of intentional or unintentional non-compliance with New Zealand laws.
If a passenger is considered to be a risk they will be sent to a secondary search area, which gives frontline staff the opportunity to question the passenger and gather information. Following further inquiries, the passenger or the contents of their bags could be searched.”
He had NO reason imo to suspect you of anything, right, except you were a different colour! Just saying.
Loved your videos of your Waiheke trip. But bro, your accepting the boss’s offer for his employees to take you around and then seeing those dudes and their van, I thought whoa, this was like a kidnapping movie in the making. @Jeni10 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

The scanner isn’t at the passenger checking area, it’s in another department, which is why they have to take the empty bag with them. They can’t invite the passenger because that’s inviting a prospective suspect into an unsecured area. Trust me, they are not gone long enough to fill the steel frame of your bag with drugs, or to line the bag with a hidden cache of narcotics and glue it inside. That’s a lot of trouble that smugglers know takes days to do. The scanner isn’t in a public area.

I’m sorry for this pathetic treatment from our customs! I had a bad experience this year! Bought a Big Mac from the Sydney terminal, ate half of it but couldn’t finish it, so thought to finish it on the plane. Filled out the customs form and declared my Big Mac as food in case I forget to finish it or throw it away! Well, I forgot to throw it away so I got stopped, half eaten burger taken off me and officer disappeared around the corner. Second officer motioned me to a desk, started filling out a form without saying anything! I told her, that I had declared the burger as food, she gave me the piece of paper and told me to go to another desk across from where we were. No one was there so the same officer came around to the 2nd desk and started filling out another form and I’m like, “What are you doing? I’ve declared that I have a half eaten burger as food! All she said to me was, “not the meat!” Gave me the infringement notice and that was it!! No explanations, she didn’t take the time to educate me cause I thought a Big Mac can be declared as food! Long story short, I wrote and complained, I receive an email back with no apologies of the officers behaviour but still had to pay the infringement notice!! The most expensive BigMac I’ve ever had! $413.00!!! 🙄

When you have short stays in one country and fly to another country, the border security will see you and check you and your luggage for suspected drugs. Having no itinerary is unusual for tourists, because everyone does their research about the country and places they want to visit. You came in with several red flags so they needed to check you thoroughly before admitting you into the country. Australia is the same. We do random searches too, and the border and immigration officers are looking for passengers with any red flags. If you have nothing, you’re fine, but they will always check someone who stays for short periods and/or has no itinerary. Those two things fit drug smugglers.

We have both been searched during random bomb detection searches & are aware that NZ is the same as Australia in being very proactive in protecting their flora & forna from introduced deseases. Please don’t be mad at the customs officers. They are just doing their job. Drugs are a big problem for every country. You are lucky you missed the big massacre in Sydney from a guy on drugs. I always get interrogated as a solo traveler. When I travel to the States they either think I’m a drug smuggler or trying immigrate illegally even though I travel on an Australian passport.
I’m really enjoying your travel series. It’s different because you try to show the not so nice parts of places but do it with respect, good humour and kindness. Keep up the good work.

I had a similar experience in Israel--and this was when I was leaving the country. I had travelled on a Holy Land Tour organized by my church. So upon leaving Israel, we didn't travel as a group. I was headed to Malta for a little R & R. Upon arrival at the Tel Aviv airport, my US passport was checked and rechecked against my face. I was asked my name and what I was doing in Israel. I told them where I visited in Israel. In fact, they could have checked my carry on luggage for evidence of my tours but they didn't. I was also taken into a room for further searching. I needed to be on my best behavior to say the least 😂.

At Heathrow I have been taken out of line and been put in a body scanner. I have had my luggage opened and gone through! My husband can’t understand why I am always treated this way and the only thing we can think of is that they figure I look like a person who wouldn’t make a fuss but we believe it is really so they can say they are not racially profiling certain people … I am so sorry this happened to you because it looks bad for the country. There are many reasons for security to check you over, but if you’re innocent, just relax and be patient, because what they’re doing is their job, ie looking for contraband, undeclared foods, anything of a biosecurity nature that threaten their farmers etc. If you’re not doing that, you’ll eventually be allowed to leave.
If they see someone sweating and not making eye contact, that can be because they’re behaving guilty and they’ll pull them aside. Also because people who are carrying drugs internally often appear sweaty and nervous, so they might be subjected to a body scan to see if there are pellets inside them. That’s also for the traveler’s safety because they can die from an overdose if a package leaks. If they have come from a country known for drug smuggling or if they are doing short trips, especially i n series, that’s a red flag to them because smugglers also go from country to country to pick up and drop off narcotics. Also, since flights are expensive, such short trips make them ask the question, how much money have you got? There are lots of valid reasons for border security to stop and search you. And yes, having the same name as a previous offender is one of them. So is a message from the previous country’s border security that you “fit the description of a prior offender”. Getting annoyed with border security only elevates their suspicions, so stay calm and be your normal friendly self. The less reactive you are, the easier it is for them to check everything and let you go. One important thing, NEVER LIE TO THEM! If you do that and they find out, you’ll be added to a list and then they’ll be watching you everywhere. It’s a serious offence to lie to border security because their job is to check and detect. Innocents will always be sent on their way eventually.

@@Jeni10 anyone putting my name into a computer would have found out that I had an extremely high security clearance with several countries so being on a watch list was definitely not the issue in the main countries I travelled to and from. One instance, the full body scan at Heathrow was definitely to allay profiling claims, because when we woke up in Singapore and turned on the TV we found out that there was a terrorist bombing threat and travellers out of Heathrow were queuing in their thousands for hours to undergo exhaustive clearances and the no more than 100 ml of liquids became a new restriction.

Everybody knows that New Zealand has a problem with racism. In 1976 over 20 African African countries boycotted the Montreal Olympic games because of the participation of New Zealand in those games.

I encourage you to contact the United States Embassy in New Zealand. One of the missions of diplomatic representations abroad is to defend their fellow citizens in whatever country in the world. Westerners do it very well, especially the United States. Even here in France, the white police officers in front of a African American are afraid, because the white police officers here in France know that the African American will contact the American Embassy in Paris, and he will be found and sanctioned, punished. recognize that it is in front of Africans that certain racist police officers allow themselves to behave in a racist manner, but in front of a black person who has an American passport, it is not the same attitude.

You were certainly profiled, unfortunately many of those who enter the country who have no idea of what they are going to do or any plans prior to travelling fit the profile of drug mules. Given you are a frequent traveller, single, answered certain questions the way you did fits the profile of many who get caught trying to import drugs. I have visited Younde and Douala in Cameroon, one day I was taking photos in Younde (early 1990s) I unwittingly took a photo of a public building, I was immediately stopped by two armed soldiers who asked me to hand over my camera I was told you cannot take photos unless you have authorisation, so I asked them "where do I get authorisation?" given I was in the street, after some debate and checking my passport the soldiers let me go with my camera and a warning not to take any photos of public buildings.

Both times on the trip back to Auckland from Sydney in between the two trips and the return from Brisbane a month later I was pulled over at customs twice and asked a million stupid questions. Lots of ppl on here saying it was just customs… bullshit. I was profiled for being a single male travelling alone. Anyone who thinks profiling doesn’t happen in NZ is living in dreamland. I’d also like to point out that I didn’t have any problems regarding customs in Australia and they too have a fragile eco system to protect. Australia was good to me but NZ was not… I’m a Kiwi returning home and like yourself I felt like going straight back to OZ where I felt more welcome. New Zealand is a very bureaucratic country, and the questions he asked are somewhat typical and expected. Probably, it was down to your nationality(I'm too polite to say "race"); they don't realise just how many rich people there are in places like Africa or China or India. They think you are coming here to work illegally or something like that. Also, they are probably shocked at all the travel you have done, and don't understand how you(an African) can afford it.
Actually, in the US they have a similar attitude. I live in Beijing and I know a number of young single Chinese girls who have been refused visas to the US. The US embassy staffers think that they don't want to go on holiday, instead they desperately want to go to the US to live the American dream because life in China is so bad compared to the US---what they don't realise is that a lot of these girls don't even have to work, they spend their time playing golf, lunching, shopping and travelling around the world.
A lot of average people in NZ don't comprehend people with money and the lifestyle that goes with it, as NZ is a very expensive country to live in and the "average" person struggles financially. Actually, they don't even realise that there are rich people in NZ......years ago I used to clean rich NZer's houses....and I learned then that "the other half" definitely exists in NZ too. P.S. my comments will very likely "trigger" one or two of my fellow Kiwis. Damn $59.....prices have risen since I lived in Auckland.

That’s very true. That’s what I told him but he didn’t care about anything I had to say.

Hi there. I am from Auckland and I just started watching your channel this morning. I couldnt believe it when I saw you coming to my home town! Sorry about customs! We have a rising coke problem here! lol Anyways I hope you have a good time here and if I see you around I ll say a big hello!
NZ is great! And yeah not so much racist as people are definitely not used to seeing African americans here, unless they are here doing a rap concert! :)

My father had a similar experience in Aukland. He was a white Australian 60. Also, my grandmother got caught smuggling cheese back into Australia. It happened to me in London. I felt like a leper.

One time in 2019 I had booked a Two way flight ticket from the Midwest, to Oakland Salt Lake City. Before I could get a connection, I found that the plane lift 15 minutes. I was made to spend at a Hotel close to the Air port. The Hotel was too noisy.

Ivain, I believe that you were racially profiled. They thought that you were smuggling something and at the end they looked ridiculous. Thank God, that HE helped you to keep your cool.

Their job is to suspect based on their filtering category. In your case happen to be in their target for reason, just call it a bad luck, happed to me in US too. I see the rest of your clip how you enjoyed but don’t believe the guy by the wharf. Pukekohe is beautiful place and lovely people way better than his South Island.
