When Should You Perform The C8 Trans Filter 1st Replacement to Avoid A Voided Warranty

  • When should you change the DCT trans filter for the C8 has become a hot topic as of lately, especially since there is a concern about the factory warranty being voided if it's not done correctly. Many new Corvette owners are stressing over the right time or mileage to get the trans filter replaced and dealers are adding to the fear by telling owners even if they changed it as 6800 miles it needs to be done again at 7500. How critical is that additional 700 miles? Will your warranty really get voided if you don't do the filter change in 700 miles? Lets talk about the crazy concerns of voided warranties based off the trans filter 1st change.

    The Tremec DCT TR9080 dual clutch transmission (RPO M1L, M1M) (Fig. 1) on 2020-2024 Corvettes features a transmission canister filter that should be replaced at the initial 7,500-mile (12,000-km) maintenance service. After the initial service, the canister filter should be changed at 22,500 miles (36,000 km) and then at regular 22,500-mile (36,000-km) intervals.GM has extended maintenance coverage of the filter (Fig. 3) to two years or 7,500 miles (12,000 km), whichever comes first, on the first filter change to cover vehicles that do not accumulate 7,500 miles in the first year. It is recommended to only replace the filter at the required maintenance intervals due to the loading characteristics of the filter.

      Thanks for the detailed explanation, as I've stated before that information is inside the manual and what I recommend the C8 owners follow. But the questions people always ask and dealers try to exploit is the drivers that don't drive their cars. I try to explain to people it doesn't make sense to change the filter the first year is they only have 3800 miles on the car, but get it done if it's approaching the 2 year mark and you haven't had it replaced even if you only have 4000 miles on the car. What has caused the biggest uproar is the announcement that the filter needs to be changed as close to the 7500 mile mark as possible and even if you got it changed with low miles on your car it needs to be changed again as you approach the 7500 mile mark or the warranty could be voided on the trans. So dealers now have people shook telling them if they change the filter at 6800 miles they need to come back and do it again at 7500 and that's not true. People try to make the words and numbers like law and it's not law its suggestions with an explanation.
      GM 's initial statement about the DCT was it takes about 7k-8k miles for the trans mission parts to wear together, so the recommend and cover the first trans filter change to remove all the metal particles that should accumulate form that process at 7500 miles. The wearing process should reduce by a lot less going forward so you should do the 2nd one around 22,500 or 15k miles later. After that service it should be done in intervals of 22,500 miles, but you also have a trans fluid flush and replacement scheduled in the maintenance plan as well for 3yrs or 40k miles which the filter will get replaced as well. So sticking to the exact mileage isn't life or death like many people try to imply.

    My 23 has been perfect for the first year and just as a precaution on the first service I had them change the DCT filter. What harm could be done? Got in the car after the service and it's not been the same. Intermittently, the car just won't move in 1st gear, press on brake and press throttle and it moves. This all started after they changed the filter. They checked the fluids, there is no CEL, they said it's fine. Fortunately, there are 2 more years of warranty remaining. It had 2500 miles at the time of the service.

      I'm sorry to hear that and I have no real explanation for you. I know the GM engineers said the closer to the 7500 miles you change it the better. The filter replacement is suppose to be focused around removing the metal shavings from the gears wearing together and the car learning your driving habits so the trans can shift based off your driving ability. My thoought is have you taken it to another chevy dealer one that sells and services Camaro ZL1s or C7 ZR1 Corvettes. Locations like that typically have master techs for GM performance cars. I'm thinking something wasn't put back correctly or the pressure is being lost. I would look for another dealer/location to address it .

      @ICNVDE  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sorry for the long gap time, been under the weather lately. I would get it done if you don't see anything reporting it has been taken care of just for your piece of mind. When it comes to warranty coverage as long as the original trans filter isn't in the car GM should honor any repair maintenance on the car because it doesn't state the filter replacement has to be done by a dealer. Most 2020 cars are drifting outside of the original 3 year warranties anyway but the 5 year engine and trans warranties are still in affect. I tell people not to be to concerned about it as a second owner because most aftermarket warranties will cover trans repairs regardless of servicing neglect, but that doesn't mean go out and create an issue. i say maintain the car with the intent on preserving the peak performance out put of it.

      It's complex but it's still not that hard to turn a wrench on you just have to turn on more parts than in the past. That's the one part about having a mid engine car everything is condensed and thrown together in tight places but the performance is something else. Now i know 2 guys that own C8s and do all their own work, so if your truly want to be hands on don't get discouraged there are videos out there that show you how to do so much on these cars

    I firmly disagree ..what do you feel the issue is? I have a hydraulic backhoe and I change engine every 100 hrs and do a trans filter as well..Factory questioned me as to why and my response is filters are far cheaper than a transmission
    I’m looking to buy a new vette and will change filter after 1500 miles or sooner..yes it’s most likely not necessary but I do work myself and filters are cheap

    • @ICNVDE
      @ICNVDE  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Charles first off I want to say its your car and do what you feel but at the same time people don't believe there is a such thing as over servicing your car but you can over service something to the point you "could" create another issue. The transmissions failures aren't as frequent or common as many groups try to make it seem. But you are right filters are cheaper than a transmission so I understand your logic. Now the only thing I can say to you is if a transmission is going to fail extra filter changes not gone prevent it from happening. Transmission failures due to clogged trans filters are so rare, you have a better chance hitting the power ball for $500 million. Plus there hasn't been 1 transmission failure so far where the reason for its malfunction was listed as a clogged trans filter. The reason for the intervals is to see if the trans parts are wearing or breaking down quicker than expected. The extra filter changes and your own personal servicing removes the reporting and record keeping of the transmission wearing habits from the system and doesn't help them identify a possible issue with your car. Every service interval has a reason other than taking your money. I mean lets be real the Full Synthetic High Performance engine oil is rated for 10-12k miles 18-24 mos of use, so do you really think it needs changing at 7500 miles because it can't handle the use and abuse or lack there of? Do you think the test they performed on their engine oil to determine its wear capabilities were flawed? We can agree to disagree but some times people focus so much on the wrong thing they loose sight of the big picture.

    • @ICNVDE

      Depends on your view point, you can waste money performing unnecessary maintenance, you can increase the risk of not installing items back correctly, you can increase the chances of parts getting stripped out and the correct amount of fluid getting replaced, you can increase the chances of the wrong fluid getting used and contaminating the system.... you may feel like there's no way to over service a car but you can create unnecessary problems.
