Curious about two considerations: - Clearance Delivery before starting engines. - Looked like you could heave departed VFR initially. Advantages: Info about delays and actual routing (no need to change your filed route in the FMS [and depart VFR]) and engines start takes only a few minutes before contacting Ground. I like how you display your (small) mistakes by showing it, just when I hear it. Great flight; thanks for sharing.
You always ask the best questions! I'll try to elaborate some: 1. Fort Lauderdale Executive does have a clearance delivery which you are required to call to get your clearance (but not before engine start). When I call for clearance, they will tell me then if there are any EDCTs, Ground Holds or just general delays. There weren't when I picked up my clearance there were no delays relayed. My passengers showed up an hour later :-) 2. Departing VFR: This used to be a trick pilots would use many years ago, and although a lot still do it, it's generally frowned upon by ATC, and you wind up developing a reputation for yourself. Also, ATC doesn't need to allow you into the system if you're VFR, and you may wind up not getting a clearance after departing, or worse yet, put in a "penalty box" for doing that. In this particular circumstance, it was Jacksonville Center that had requested the ground stop due to saturation, and more than likely we would not have been able to pick up in the air unless we landed somewhere first and re-filed. You also need to stay below 18,000 feet where we'd be burning a ton more fuel. 3. Reprogramming the FMS is a breeze in this airplane because my iPad talks to the G3000 avionics. So, whatever I file from my iPad I can send directly to the avionics. It literally takes 5 seconds to do it, and I have a video or 2 coming out that will show that. In retrospect on the whole thing, being that it was after the holidays, I should have called Clearance Delivery or Ground before I started my engines just to double check. But, it made for a good "ATC will work with you if you ask..." teaching moment. I just wish I would have kept the cameras rolling when I called ATC back asking about a different departure corridor.
@@AccidentalAviator Thanks for your feedback. I see a few things have changed... but not for the better in my humble opinion, for it makes no sense. My footloose memories are: CD: Get your actual FP, run the right engine when you see your pax arriving, close the door and startup the left and start moving on the tarmac while contacting Ground. Punch the route and do your checks while trying to switch over to Tower. Worked out well every time 😅 You can always depart VFR! Yes restricted, but you are on your way. Its not a trick, you get out and the airport has one more problem solved. At 17.5 you can ask for your route and if they are (childish) reluctant, retry with the next controller. It is cooperation and common sense that works well, not ridged rules and infantile behavior. It makes no sense to program the FMS with an unknown, even with the iPad. CD is there for a reason and I think all info should be present and gone over, before starting engines and Ground. Probably a nice discussion when you talk to Kamar again. Thanks for your participation and I'm looking forward to your next clip.
@@raccoonair departing VFR and requesting IFR in congested airspace (South Florida, NY metro, etc.) is risky business and ATC is not being childish to deny the IFR pickup. Sometimes the overhead stream is so full that there literally isn't a place for a pop-up IFR aircraft. Activating a pop-up IFR airborne can, at a minimum, violate the traffic management initiatives in effect to prevent sector overload or it can potentially not be possible from a safety perspective due to proximity of IFR aircraft who actually waited for their spot in the stream. While it is perfectly legal to depart VFR and hope for the IFR pickup, it is absolutely not the safest option when you are departing into one of the busiest TRACON/Centers in the US.
@@joshh2705 The way you present your argument is correct; however that is not what I meant. Burning gallons of fuel on the tarmac and going nowhere is a waist. Better spending it on 17,500' in VMC in a fast jet, far away from the busy TRACON and request a clearance then and there. Just arguing that that is not a trick, but a solution for both parties. I have the utmost respect for ATC and I do respect their limitations, for I know the congested Florida area very well. Using a SID with flight following will make it probably even easier for all concerned. Perhaps when considering this option as a solution for a quick departure for some jet aircraft in VMC, it could work out for all parties.
@@raccoonair I hear ya, just want to let folks know that if you try and head up the east coast it could be awhile before you are away from busy airspace. Hey there,Great video. When you descend through 10,000 and you were slowing to the speed restriction, is that built into the Vpath on the FMS? Or do you have to start slowly 500 above to not bust the speed below 10k?
That's a great question! I just need to make the throttle adjustments to slow down. Newer versions of the CJ3+ (called Gen 2) that will be coming out soon have auto-throttles and will fly all of your speed restrictions for you.
@AccidentalAviator thank you for the reply. As a follow-up to that, how does the CJ3 handle when slowing and descending? Will a throttle adjustment alone allow you to slow to 250 or is there a speed brake deployment needed?
@@phillipday2391 Obviously that all depends on the situation, but I'd say under a normal 3 degree descent (which is what VNAV plans for) that you do not need to do anything other than adjust throttles (like you see in this video) We do have speedbrakes on board and you can see me using them in other videos.
