  • Maharishi explains everything about the Transcendental Meditation mantra and how it is important to have a meaningless sound.

    Maharishi Mahesh Yogi:
    "The teaching has been set up in a very very standard form. What we do is actual practice involves thinking of a word. A word with no meaning. The principal is if we know the meaning, meaning is a static thing. Someone who doesn't know the meaning of the word pencil in English will just here the sound pencil. Someone who the word pencil, the meaning is static."
    "The thought functions as an impulse as a motivation for impulse, then the mind is pulsating if we don't try to manipulate the thought in anythings concentrate or hold it on or anything then the thought will start to refine refine refine and it will sink out and the activity will start to die out die out die out. So this is what we say, naturally greater activity of the mind reaches its least value, in a very very natural way. Any activity has the tendency to settle down and be quiet. So this natural tendency of the mind to be quiet is all we use in Transcendental Meditation, and nothing else. So in a very innocent manner, we think of the thought and every time we think it becomes finer finer and finer and we experience its finer thoughts and then it dies out. The mind is left wide awake by itself without any sound to experience. that inner wakefulness is that unbounded awareness, no boundaries."
    To have that effortless thinking, one needs verification from the teacher and then one knows what it means to have thought with no effort.

    The Transcendental Meditation technique is a simple, effortless mental process practiced for 15 - 20 minutes twice a day, sitting quietly and comfortably in a chair with the eyes closed.

    The prices charged are reasonable for the times. Why should anyone expect "Free" training? The movement does offer discounted courses depending on financial condition or status, such as student, or otherwise. I learned as a student at student rates back in 1975, which was then $90, which was hard to come by at the time for a student with a very limited income. But TM works. I am now a very healthy older man with excellent heart health and good physical conditioning. When men or women ask me my age, they are surprised on how much younger I appear. Part of that is genetics, true, but the rest is the effects of a lifetime of practice of TM twice daily, just like when I started, 43 years ago.

    The TM fees not only pay for your teachers time, but they help bring the technique to impoverished areas and schools. Most of the kids in these schools live in hoods that stress them beyond belief. Learning TM is helping untold numbers of people to be able to de-stress and focus on school work, etc.

  • @MichaelMaitri
    @MichaelMaitri 13 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Whenever you focus your mind on something your mind becomes fixated on it. As long as your mind remains fixated on the “object”of thought you won’t be able to refine it any further. Through practice you can train the mind to allow thoughts to pass through it without any form of attachment to them this will allow you to reach deeper states of being. As your mind settles down your awareness expands at some point your awareness will reach a fully expanded state / unbounded awareness.

    This is part of a talk Maharishi had with a group of scientists. They are not shown here but you’ll hear them in the last part of the clip.
    A question for the original poster: Maybe you could update the excerpts of Maharishi’s explanation in the description? What is there now is very sloppy!
    And better don’t write "explains everything" because it’s better to make clear from the start that one can’t learn TM from this clip! Anyway, here is my transcript of (some of) Maharishi’s words:
    Maharishi (a few excerpts, slightly edited):
    "The teaching has been set up in a very, very standard form. What we do is this: actual practice involves thinking of a word. A word devoid of meaning. We don’t know the meaning; we don’t try to know the meaning. And the principle is that, if we know the meaning, then that meaning is a static thing. … Someone who doesn’t know what "pencil" means in English will just hear the sound "pencil". someone who knows the word "pencil", for them the meaning is static."

    "The simple formula is that the thought functions as an impulse, as a motivation for impulse. Then: the mind is pulsating. If we don’t try to manipulate the thought in any sense-concentrate, or hold it on, or anything-then the thought will start to be refined, refined, refined and it will sink out. As if the activity starts to die out, die out, die out… So this what we say: Naturally, greater activity of the mind reaches its least value, in a very, very natural way. Any activity has the tendency to settle down and be quiet. So this natural tendency of the mind to be quiet is all we use in meditation, and nothing else. So in a very innocent manner, we think of the thought and every time we think it becomes finer and finer and finer, we experience its finer states and then it dies out. The mind is left wide awake by itself, without any sound to experience. That inner wakefulness is that Unbounded Awareness-no boundaries."

    @Transcendental Meditation - Yes - that is the question I have been wondering too, - why so expensive? That makes a lot of people unable to learn the method, since you need to be trained, or how to put it, by a certified TM teacher. I am not saying that you should not pay for it, because those who teaches it, they gotta make a living too, - just questioning the fact that it is quite expensive, and for some people it might not even be possible to pay the fee for a course, to learn the technique, - when they really could need it, benefit from it - getting a better life quality from it. What are your thoughts around that?

      to MAKE money?!?!

    • @mhikl4484
      @mhikl4484 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Any organisation has costs and needs either members to pay dues or sponsors, or both.
      I took TM around 1972 when in university. The movement could be found in many Canadian cities at the time. A special price of $75 was charged for students. This was half or better?? than the usual cost. At the time, I felt it was fair.
      I still mediated using TM and Tibetan Buddhism methods. Each serves its purpose. I have never shared my mantra.
      The cost for students $750 & the general public $1500 sounds a little high. Using an inflation checker it seems my $75 dollars is now roughly $425. However, comparing tuition costs today to 1972, the rise in the cost of TM seems in the ball park. I believe once you have paid the cost, support there after is free. I’d do it again and recommend it highly. My children and wife do TM. My wife and I made up mantras for each child though we both took proper instruction from TM instructors.

    • @meditationchannel
      @meditationchannel  10 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      doutzen177 Long story short, the price is set at a level that allows our organization to keep running, so that we can continue promoting and teaching the TM technique.
      Long story long...Our mission is to make the TM technique available to as many people as possible, and as you mention, it costs money to keep an organization running. As non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, all revenues from course fees go entirely to support our educational and charitable initiatives, and we do our best to offer scholarships and grants to those under financial hardship. The David Lynch Foundation, another 501(c)(3) organization, picks up where we leave off, offering the TM technique for free to some of the world’s most "at-risk populations" (veterans, refugees, inner-city students, victims of domestic abuse, etc) through the support donors.

      thedarkmoonman hello there. i am starting my TM training this Friday (and I cannot wait!) i never did it before because the cost was prohibitive for me ($1500). However, when i attended the introduction meeting, the rates have dropped to $960. for an individual, $720 each for a couple, and $360 for a full time student. They had applications for scholarships and reduced fees depending on your financial situation. I applied for a reduced fee, and am taking the classes for $500. I will make one payment of $125 at your initial training day, then $125 once a month for three months. I really appreciate that, in that they don't require you to pay it all before they teach you. To me, this shows they have there intent and heart in the right place. From what I have read and listened to, it will be well worth the money. David Lynch has a foundation that pays for inner city school kids, prisoners, enlisted people with PTSD, and Native Americans. The people that will teach me are Ph.Ds. I have tried many types of meditation, and have not gotten the benefits that TM seems to offer. Please rethink your opinion before you judge, maybe. And as always, you get what you pay for. I hope the info about the rates was helpful. Thank you

Transcendental Meditation requires personal instruction by a specially qualified teacher. This is because each person is unique: each person has a different pace of learning, different questions, different experiences during the instruction process. This ensures you meditate properly and gain the practical and profound benefits from the meditation technique.

    For those complaining about prices; People have to learn the value of meditation, because these teachers took lifetimes in the mountains so they can reach these states of consciousness, and they come back to the world and teach it in a more refined way so people would not have to go to the mountains, but people dont know how to value that, and new age hippies put this stupid program on the collective dividing money and spirituality, as long as we are living within a monetary system, there is nothing wrong with making money with spiritual practices :)

    when you create a large insittution, then people will be suspicious of it , if yiou give freely , then people will be suspicious of it, and yet word of mouth from giving freely really sinks in to devotees more than having to go bow down before someone ( even metaphorically ! ) that is praised by all, we can easily see how the "S"ams" of the world would find fault in such an approach, its not even for them. hence being subtle in the world, not making giant organizations if possible ?

    • @Geke1008
      @Geke1008 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'll try to answer that in Maharishi's view: pure consciousness is the stuff we are made of, so when we stop thinking during meditation, that's what remains. But we are still humans with a body, not angels :-) and in that deep silence, self-repair mechanisms kick in, which draws the mind back into activity. Only in enlightenment, when the body and mind have become free of all pollutions and distortions, pure consciousness can coexist with bodily activity.
      Does that make sense?

      But you are diving through several layers of counsiousness. Going to the source does not mean that these layers you passed, have stopped working or excisting ;-) You have just dived too deep to hear and see all these toughts at the top.

    @timone1002 - well the human mind is designed perfectly for the self help industry - events create thoughts - thoughts create feelings - feelings create behaviour - the mind is constantly in a spiral of doubt, concern, judgment etc ... & when you spiral with compulsive thought you search for the magic cure, trying the next thing that comes along - Anthony Robbins, Eckhart Tolle, Transendental meditation, etc - eventually one resonates with you - sadly by then yr bank account is empty :)

      1Kilili Yes, the TM technique is only taught by certified teachers. Sorry to hear there isn't a teacher close to you! My best recommendation is to use the 'Find a TM Teacher' on www.tm.org and get in touch with the nearest teacher. Often, teachers will make occasional trips to surrounding areas.

    • @meditationchannel
      @meditationchannel  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +LilyofFlanders There are not an unlimited number of mantras - what a TM teacher does is select a mantra that is suitable for each student. A much larger portion of the value of learning from a certified teacher, however, lies in learning how to correctly use your mantra. The TM technique is quite simple, but it is also very nuanced, and learning and practicing properly are crucial for gaining the benefits!

    @MickyG4444 $1500 seems like a lot at first glance, but i ask you this: how much did your mushrooms cost you? $20? $30? if you were to drop mushrooms once a week, how long would it take before you had spent $1500? begin to save a little here and a little there... the TM technique isn't going anywhere. that's why it costs so much; they aren't using the money in some sort of egregious way to swindle you, they are using it to build more TM centers, advertise more, etc.
