One of the last of the John Wayne era of actors has passed. It was Wayne that recommened his friend Arness for the role of Matt Dillion. Thanks for the memories and the great character of Matt Dillion.
was a young girl and mom and dad all ways watch gum smoke.now my husband watchs everday we love matt Dillon . god rest his soul .I love to see him in person and kitty and all . great show .thanks to all of then.
Gunsmoke was the only show my dad made us watch with him (there were 10 of us kids). I think he thought it taught good morals, although it was criticized at times for being too violent (boy have times changed). I still love that show and it causes me to think of my pa occasionally.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Arness. I did enjoy watching "Gunsmoke" with great-grandmother and my late great-grandfather when I was five or six years old. Thank you, sir!!
As a child growing up in the 60s and 70s I loved the western genre of television shows, especially Gunsmoke. I looked forward to the program every week. It must have been exhausting for these actors putting out an hour program every week for as long as they did. The quality of the show was always excellent. I often wondered why Matt Dillon always wore a pink shirt.
James Arness as Matt Dillon he was awesome I idolized him very much and still do,he was tough, didnt have to use his gun unless he had too,he was brave and bold I would love to be like Matt Dillon,I wish I was as Bold and Brave not scared of anything. I wonder if James Arness is anything like his character Matt Dillon, that Question remains unanswered...
My favorite scene was Matt, in disguise, shooting a gun out of a guy's hand--and when the guy is leaving, he tries to pick up the gun--and Matt says "leave it"; then the guy says "you don't leave a man with much----...and Matt says "you didn't come with much"
Matt Dillion represent the federal government, he uphold the law, made the city safe, but did not interfere with daily life of the citizens, comparing that with the todays federalize who want to have a finger in everthing, James thanks
In fact, there were very few gunfights in the Old West. There was more Saturday night back-shooting. Even drunk, few of them wanted to stare at the wrong end of a gun.
The THING!!! Classic, he was a terrifying Alien, that movie scared the crap out of me when it came out... So much better than the remake which sucked with Kurt Russell
In the early shows,he would draw in the opening. Then there was a crack down on violence and he would just stand there. Today,I think NCIS is the most violent show on TV. Guns, guns, every week.
My personal interest was why I seldom heard James Arness discuss his brother. The few times he did, that I heard, it was nice enough but it was so rare. Same with Graves, hardly ever heard him utter a word about his brother. NOT saying there were any problems, they both seem to be very high class people, and I admired both of them. I did learn of the surf connection and that Arness' son became a champion here in LA
@STEVEMOR909 Sooner or later you have to give it up and move on.I recall the play,"Fanstaixs", Was that 7 days a week and 3 on Sunday? Get a life or stand on an assembly line and watch life pass you by.
Grew up watching Gunsmoke, its the best western series made. I still watch it every chance I get. We miss you Matt Dillon.
Rest in peace, James Arness, you gave my family hours and hours and hours of entertainment. My dad didn't like many tv shows, but he loved Gunsmoke.
Mat Dillon was what every man aspired to be honest, humble and tough when he had to.
What a great character and a role model for so many of us who watched the Gunsmoke series thankfully i'm still watching it now. at 58years old.

Someone mentioned Peter Graves, I wonder how many people know they were brothers?

I would hate to be a TV actor. Same old shit over and over and over. If I were an actor I would go for the big screen No TV period.
