I'm only a few chapters in so far and I do like the general idea the author gets across. However it was very strange to get with that little rant about young people and snowflakes. I get the point he was trying to make about the education system but it really seemed to come out of nowhere. Also later on he comments on feminism and he says it in a really snarky way which is kinda funny how out of left field it seemed. I still intend to listen to the entire book but just FYI anyone who reads this the author makes some iffy statements.

My mother worked as a waitress for 40 years. Her "best" period was working for the same hotel for 20 years. Still earning minimum wage as everybody. Still no raise not anything besides a "Good job!".
I was raised watching my mother going to the same place, at the same hour, doing the same and coming at the same time for many many years.
I don't know how I'm getting it but I know that I don't want that life for myself. I work at a great place, but I feel like I'm helping to build my boss's dream, not mine. And when I talk about this, even to my girlfriend she says that "Well, compared to the rest is a good job, right?".

I read the story on Why Harrison Ford went to become an actor? (He was a carpenter..) He saw his father after so many years working for IBM retired and got a watch at the end. He said " I don't want a watch at the end, I want more...". That's why he gave up carpentry and went Hollywood.

Hey Josh, first comment.. just wanted to say, this video made me reconfirm that quitting my job was indeed a right decision. I live in Japan, and I went into a pretty huge manufacturing company ready to learn lots in life. But my company sent me to a workplace where all we do is cost management and chores. One time on a Friday the head of the department was holding a presentation and a "dinner party" for our subcontractors. So aside from him, 3/4 of the workers in my workplace including myself spent literally almost the entire day setting up tables, putting out snacks, opening doors for incoming guests, handing out beers, cleaning trash and ultimately literally standing not doing shit for 1 fucking hour, only to move when the guests needed guidance to the bathroom.
I thought I needed to wait for another 3 years because in Japan, that's we do. But I did not got a PPL and graduated from a technical institute with a mech engineering degree to do jobs like that.
You inspired me to start a career in development, so from next month I will joining a coding bootcamp to pursue my dream of becoming a freelane full stack developer. Won't be easy, but I'd like to make the best out of it to not make this decision regretful.

I would honestly be fine as a a normal employee if I got to work 25 hours a week instead of 40+. No one is even productive for the full 40 hours. The work week needs to be shortened.
People would just be unproductive in proportional amount...so, even less productive.
Seriously. I personally hate that I spend most of my day at work. I wouldn't mind working everyday of the week if my shifts were 4-5 hours long. I currently work 10-12 hour days and I hate it. I leave home when it's dark and get home when it's dark. I have no time to do anything but rest and go to sleep.

I am lucky that in my industry early morning shifts are a thing (6AM-2PM) so at least I can have the evenings free, but there's many people that don't do them and stay all the damn day at work. What's the point of a life like this? Living only for the weekends, never seeing your children grow, paying for a home that you mostly only use to sleep in...

Great advice that's also very level-headed. I'm glad when you said that you made 13K one month, that you also stepped back and asked yourself "is this sustainable?" Too often, social media gurus and youtubers highlight the momentary good times, giving the illusion their choices and approach to making money are profitable in the long term.

your content is GOLD and ive been looking for someone for years to give this harsh reality advice - especially for people like me who ENJOY working hard and are motivated to help others...which leads to being fully taken advantage of and your heart hurt when you realize you've been played (as a young person not knowing better and rose colored glasses)...wish i had this advice 20years ago...

Going off script is difficult and scary because, once we do it, we have to figure out which way to go and we have no one else to blame when things don't go as planned. Still, if we're honest with ourselves, there's a big part of ourselves that feels restless when we follow someone else's script: we know we're just a character in someone else's plot, instead of being the hero of our own story.

Dude it's funny cause one of my breaking moments was actually when I WORKED at Starbucks. We had to go to these "rallies" once a year where we do bullshit teambuilding exercises and shit like that. The manager of my district was giving a presentation and giving a bit of background about herself and she showed us all these pictures of her travelling and she said something that literally made me sick. She's like "travelling is my passion and I just work this job so I can get money to travel basically lol" and it just clicked, I'm thinking like if travelling is your passion why aren't you figuring out some way to monetize it like thru a blog or YT or something so you can do it fulltime instead of working for a coffee company and accepting the (maybe) month that they give you per year to travel? I realized in that moment so many people are sacrificing their one life on this earth for bullshit that's the day I knew I had to quit and pursue finding my only path in life. And looking around at all the people smiling and agreeing with her, literally made me nauseous I felt sooo out of place
Maybe vlogging about your passion might kill your passion. I agree with the rage you're feeling but maybe it's not a good idea to mix things too much (I wouldn't want to work with my partner despite us getting along splendidly, just so we don't mix stuff too much and trying to manage everything in life leads to the opposite of the desired effect - inverse effort law, discussed in Alan Watts' The Wisdom of Uncertainty).

I have tried and failed with side hustles too. Gave up on seeking new ones due to the burnout of the corporate grind, but it’s time to get started again.
Awesome advice for the way things work right now. I used to think that the 9 to 5 was the future and I vividly remember the realization hitting me in the face the first time, thinking to myself: can I really go through with this? Best case scenario this is the rest of my life day in day out? It shook me to the core, but that was like 10 years ago. I was stuck in corporate without a clue back then and also suffering from depression... I had that jaded "why even bother" face. Eventually things got shaken up as we went public and I thought I had a chance to really shine and prove myself and get a raise and all the other dumb naive shit you can think of. A few years later I did everything I could, I learned, I optimized, I worked my ass off, I found a way to make it sing using skills from multiple fields none of which were my main job, but I was eager to be the best and find a way to do anything and everything. Man I was a fool, and I'm salty as hell to be used and abused like that. No raise, no promotion, other people's stress, duties and deadlines dumped onto me even though it had nothing to do with the job I was paid to do; unpaid overtime, you name it that was me. But the point is - I began looking for a way out same as you did, that FTE happened and I started thinking this way, except first it was a career change then my own business but I didn't have the balls to go through with it, I was burned out and spent, too tired and working too long on overdrive to put any effort back into something completely new.
So I went and did what you did except I was blessed with a job that fixes all the usual problems. If you want to work corporate, you'll be paid the minimum they need to pay you so that they don't have to replace you (if you're even worth a damn that is). If you want to be a freelancer good luck finding your own clients or even choosing the right things to make money and getting skills to do them properly, all by yourself. Not to mention all the required effort and knowledge that you need before you even get a shot at success. And you mentioned security - you're absolutely right, if you don't find a way to make money work for you while you sleep you're just living paycheck to paycheck, and you need to invest into your future. But you don't need a million dollars, thankfully. Sure, it's relatively easy to make money from more money, but as you said, in order to make it truly passive and worthwhile you need loads of cash. Which is why I went and bought a franchise. I was fortunate enough to find one that doesn't require a large upfront investment, since you're basically investing your work instead of your capital (but not your time for a salary). It's genius really, and the definition of true passive income. Now you might think "nobody would give you something like that for no money, or what work could you possible contribute to live off it passively no strings attached?" Well yes, you will be paying a lot back, but only if and when you've earned it doing what they do. You don't make money overnight, you'll probably spend a few years waiting on it to take off - but if you won't need money in 3-5 years then great, congratulations on your million dollar inheritance or whatever.
For me, even though I have some inheritance slated in the years to come, and I get by nicely with this damn corporate job, I just don't see myself wasting away in that office doing some shitty job that nobody will appreciate/reward, or getting promoted to an even shittier job with a bit more pay and a lot more stress. I have recognized this franchise as the future (you haven't heard of it yet, but you will by the end of 2021) and I have big plans. I love helping people and I can't wait to be able to do more. I won't go into any details - that's not the point. But the thing is capitalism promotes scarcity mentality and that's a bad place to be; I prefer 1+1=3 because when you pool resources the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. And if you're a human being you will realize that you couldn't have done it alone, and that you need to share with those who make it possible. If 100 people give their 1 and create 150 then take out 1.5 aren't they happy? Do they need to be millionaires? Well some assholes do, but they don't have something as valuable as we do. Their success hinges on markets with heavy competition and no humanity, while we build a strong and fair foundation and thus have no problems creating value or distributing it -- sure, nobody is a millionaire, but do they need to be?
The opportunity to do things the old (regular) way is there and always will be, so good luck getting your investors and shareholders and assemble the finest talent in your field while staying ahead of the competition... Good luck doing it forever. Or... Don't be a dick, respect and give back to the world and you just might earn true passive income within just a few short years of casual work with no need to invest serious money. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to do it the new way, and I'm pretty sure everyone else will when they become aware of the possibility.
Anyway, I've gone off on a rant here and sorry about that, but it needed to be said. Your advice is pretty solid and I wish I knew it 5-10 years back. But within a few years that'll be horribly outdated even though you'll still have to start out the usual way - education, find a job, but you won't be saving money to invest, you'll be working on your foundation which will eventually work for you even after you stop doing anything. After that everything's fair game, depending on how much you need and how quickly in order to live the life you want. Or if you were lucky and your parents did this ahead of time good for you, you enter adulthood settled.
Keep up the good work Josh and btw I'm a long time sub - I know what you're going through atm with family but I don't wanna talk about it and bring up scars while you're hurting. I like to help, but not with hugs and sweet words, I'm too damaged to function on that level. What I do like to do is offer support, advice, motivation and focus on the issue at hand. I like to work on problems, not bitch about them even though it seems impossible at times (during depression I couldn't imagine ever getting better, but I pushed on through with the last of my might with just the faint idea of keeping the foundation as solid as possible just in case some miracle happens so I can go on from there; I was about to end it many times but I found the strength to tell myself "just struggle through today, dying is always an option, I wanna see if it does get better no matter how much pain it takes to get there".) I prefer action and focus, and working those blasted 12+ hour days that I'll never get back at least did one thing for me - it kept me focused on the work instead of my pain (as much as possible) while my soul was dealing with what it had to deal with during healing. I found some strange sense of self-worth and ability even though my talents and efforts didn't get me any money or status... But I proved myself I could get better and that I could be the best (worker), even though it didn't benefit me. I found out I was a better person than I thought I was and that carried me through the day.
I am sorry for being a naive fool back then, but at the same time I've come to terms with it that it just had to happen in that period of my life. Knowing what I know now, I'm so excited about the future because casually putting in an hour a day into something I like to reach truly passive income while helping others do the same is exciting, motivating and refreshing. I'm still doing corporate but crossing out the days like an inmate in a prison. That feeling of "it's almost over" with no stress about new careers or risks of self-employment or freelancing is god damn priceless. Some day we'll be able to talk more about it, but that's all for now. I can go into further detail on FB but that has nothing to do with your video.

I'm in high school applying to college for CS right now and this has helped me see what direction my journey is supposed to be headed in. I was so short sighted before just looking at what career was rated the highest on Glassdoor. I was settling by putting the best of the worst corporate life on a pedestal. Interesting. I am 33 years old and unhappy most of my life. Bullied by my parents then my bosses when I was 'allowed' to leave the house at 27. No friends, just the phrase I want to die in my head on a looong loop. That is 1 /3 of my life assuming I live very healthy (doubt). I got on meds and I can't be around narcissist any more. My time is too valuable. I cant be around bullies or ppl that devalue and waste my time. I want to be free and I just started a job as a 'buffer' as you call it and I wonder when I can get a savings to escape...or how to escape.

Josh, you undersold this book in this video. I'm reading Unscirpted now, having read Milionaire's Fastlane before it. It's word of Truth, basically. It's like a Bible for anyone looking for TRUE wealth and fulfilment. It gives you the most real "I was blind but now I see" you can get. It sounds really over the top, but it's exactly what it is. Everyone, pls get and read those books. You can thank us later for recommending.

An outside sales or territory management role could be a good option for people who can sell, but not at the next step of working on their own. Outside sales allows for some extra freedom over a cube job in terms of flexibility, work from home, control ones' day etc.

I totally agree with Josh. Unscripted and The Millionaire Fastlane by MJ Demarco are the best books I've ever read. I also agree with Josh's sentiment. I don't understand how people go to work and don't care about wasting their lives.
The Millionaire Fastlane (same author) is also a good book. It's more of a mind set book; it doesn't contain as much advice but is still worth a read.

You are an amazing story teller. Straight talk no fluff. I hated working because I hate socializing and talking to my superiors. So I started my own business for 7 years which did ok, but then Uncle Sam came knocking and I was taxed everything I made and more, end up owing taxes for each year I was in business. Then I had to look for a job in my 40s as Amazon delivery driver, now I got a regular job but I always dream of working for myself. Everything you say is true but starting a business is near impossible, especially in USA, where you get taxed to death.

Currently I'm doing exactly what you said. Like, literally, I'm trying to figure out every day how to shorten my lunch time to get home a little sooner. The reason behind that however, is that I have more time working on my side hustles when I arrive home early. That's the same reason why I wake up at 6am every day. So I can quickly get my eight ours to pay bills, and then the real work stars. That's my exit plan right there ;-) And It doesn't bother me at all yet. I'm perfectly fine working 14-16 hours a day, because it's all part of the plan.
Took the words out of my mouth. It’s odd because, I spent so much time working to become a developer. Only to become one and realize that I’m genuinely not destined to be an employee. Still working my 9-5 job for now, hoping that I can find some other hustle to escape. Thanks for the encouragement though, it’s nice knowing that I’m not a complete psycho for wanting to trade security for freedom. 🙌😃
Hey Josh, don’t know if you already have a video on this. I’m feeling like you but more in relation to university and education than work...I feel like my major is taking everything from me when I could be dedicating myself to work and live my life comfortably. But it also feels bad thinking of dropping out of university. All that math stuff is just killing me, I’m only missing 9 subjects which are all math related and I just can’t deal with that anymore, I just wanna code, it feels like I’m wasting time because I know i won’t need to understand the intricacies of linear algebra to do Web dev freelancing.

There's been moments where I've said to myself, "Okay, one day down. All I have to do is do this 5 days a week for the rest of my life."
I would see the same faces on my commute to work and on the commute home. It makes me feel like I'm going insane!
It's clear to me that I am not built to be an employee.
All my buddies from my old accounting days loved to talk about how many returns they would do or possible clients they could get for bookkeeping and they were shocked when I told them I'm moving on from that life and working towards selling products not time. Till this day they don't get it but I guess producing something isn't for everyone

Hi Josh,
I currently have the mindset to work my ass off to get the skills so that my skills can open doors for my future. Is this a good mentality to have? Luckily most of my time at work has me learning more about architecture, new technical skills and continually improving my communication skills. I also have the mindset that when things become too easy and I am not learning it’s time to move on. Do you think this is a reasonable approach?
