    I was an intern at a Telco company and had been recently promoted to Financial Analyst. Everyone in my ACTUAL family was really happy for me. I was told by my manager that despite the massive layoffs that were going on at the time, everyone in my (rather small) team was safe. I felt relieved. One week later he told me that the CEO demanded at least one person from every team had to be fired. I was the new guy, so I got sacked. I felt pretty ashamed of myself. This taught me never to trust a company again. The good thing is that this turned out to be the best thing that has ever happened to me. I became a full-time freelancer and ended up making way more money working way less hours. So yeah... fuck corporations.

    Unfortunately I learned this the hard way. Every company I worked at they always said, "We are in this together" and "We are family" but when they are going through tough times then they will lay you off if they have to.
    At the end of the day, you do work for the company, and they will pay you for your work. However, if you see you can be paid better and get more opportunities at another company, then don't feel guilty about leaving your current company, because if they have to let you go, they won't feel guilty.

It was great fun but nobody felt obliged to attend...it was just like "Hey we're all going to XYZ place tomorrow night if you want to come along!' It was more organic than company organized events. An abusive family can be worse than a corporation.
    I didn't see what horrors a family of abusers could do to a person until after I left the engineering and corporate world. A doctor and I saved an ex girlfriend from alcohol abuse with disulfiram, and she hasn't been drinking for years. Her family has been trying to kill her to take her son ever since. Families aren't always good and can be worse than corporations.
    We are really lucky to not know how bad a bad family can be. They don't give paychecks.

    Employees, rather unfortunately, can be expendable. What you bring to the table - your value - ultimately matters. When I was laid off in 2015, I was happy because the company wasn’t going anywhere at the time, but at the same time, I was bummed out for losing a house 🏠 (laid off 2 weeks to closing). Ultimately, culture is very important. And you’re right - if you don’t go then you’re not a team player. It’s an interview for a promotion in a sense. Finding the right balance is key and it differs from company to company.
    I’ve done the escape room with my current colleagues and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I have to say that I have a great team. It’s not always like that for a lot of people though.

Even if the situation is difficult you would still want to find a solution for each other and move on together. Now I know that people that ditch you when you aren't valuable to them anymore or oppose their views aren't family. I've been through three buyouts, countless reorgs and transformations. I've been relocated and seen team members uproot their family, sell their houses, and moved across the country to only have to do it again only a year later or take severance. Basically, change that affects my job every two years. What has kept me successful has been staying mobile, versatile, adaptable, and steadily growing my skillset and reputation. People get comfortable and start feeling safe which leads to dependence and they ignore the signs of what is coming. Don't drink the kool aid, as sometimes the truth hurts but it is what we need.

    In real world people its never just business. If people were hired for their skills they would be no need to interview so often. What they are looking most of time is people fitting to their culture.
    Its business when they layoff you but when they hire its about person. This is what irks me most. Its absolutely annoying that companies first expect you to be teamplayer, good guy and think company. When you are suddenly laid off then its just business.. Nothing personal, unlike when you were hired and when you were working.
    I once went to this company. Interviews went fine. I worked my ass off six months. I also though it didnt go really well but there were other problems in company and nobody really came to give me indication they had problems with me.. One day came in and my superior wanted to have chat on me. I was on trial period(dont live in US) and he basically fired me on that spot. And escorted me out right away. No forewarming, no input before that and just like that I was out suddenly.
    Thats was fucking annoying. When you work with people that long you would expect somebody would say something if there is a problem. I was not actually really shocked I got fired itself. But I certainly didn't like the way they handled it. Its really tells way you are seen.
    You were a resource. They did not need to care what I felt. They did not need even think how to handle me and how I would take it. Just get him(me) out ASAP. I felt like piece of meat.
    If its just business then just hire people with skills. If its not then treat them well when you let go too. But many companies hire persons and layoff workers. Your personality ends when you're fired, you're not person anymore. You were resource and you should know it.

    "company family" is a forced superficial substitute (like Splenda but worse) for proper leadership which takes time. If they are taking short cuts trying to force it they will drop you like a hot potato!
    True leadership comes from upper management taking ownership for problems that occur from bottom level and up team members. If YOU are IN CHARGE someone there is something YOU could have done better to prevent this mistake. This keeps people humble, focused on solutions, and learning from mistakes. Guess what? This type of culture also builds trust and respect from those working for and with you. Taking ownership of problems is contagious once it starts. These principles ring true for parenting, teachers, corporations, essentially any human relationship.
    I spent way more time writing this comment than I intended to. Have a great day guys.

And I understand that many can't - they don't have the funds; But just don't start with all the 'family' nonsense;
    In my last job I worked with a guy who had been kept employed during the last recession and he kept telling me that the boss is a great guy and won't drop you even if there is a recession; I kinda just nodded and didn't believe it. Sure enough COVID struck, and I was let go almost immediately. You can do it. I started with no place to live, living out of my old drafty 1990 Chevrolet pickup truck. You can do it.
