I would recommend How to Think Like a Roman Emperor by Donald Robertson if you're interested in stoicism. I find it less "motivational" but more interesting than books written by Ryan Holiday.
I've been homeless. It's worse than you can imagine, especially if it's winter. Shelters are always filled and if you get a flu, get ready to DIE. Your imagination usually exaggerates, but in this case, it probably underestimates. On top of all the horrible experiences, you also learn how little people care about you. As Louis C.K. said, "learning who your real friends are is a HORRIBLE experience"! It's even worse when you figure out that no one is your friend. Your imagination can't understand what it's like to sleep behind someone's business on a smelly couch some other homeless guy used, unsure of if you'll get arrested for trespassing. Your imagination can't understand what it's like to be stranded and starving, to the point you break into a fairgrounds restaurant to find food, only to find a can of coke and drink that, because it's better than nothing. Your imagination can't understand windchill factor -20F. It can't understand the feeling of, "we don't have any space". The sinking feeling in your heart, when you think you're done for. This is it. This is the ditch you die in.
@@manictiger A tip, I used to work at a 7-11 and they throw out a TON of food that would otherwise be edible (for reasons of "freshness"). I used to take home a bunch of free food each night instead of throwing it out (with the owner's consent, of course). Now, I'm not saying you should go dumpster diving at a 7-11, but that's what I would probably do if I had to. Another note, Seneca the Younger had recommended pushing yourself as low as you can, ie, going homeless for a while, just to practice it. The idea is that if you can survive without your normal dependencies then you will be that much stronger and that much more prepared for the inevitable slings and arrows of life.
@@hwilliampolenz6713 At the time, I was WAY too far away from any restaurants, where people usually leave food out. It was also down-pouring. Not only did I need food, but I needed a roof. I wound up sleeping in an animal stable, because it was the least likely location to get me caught. I figured someone might be back for that cooler full of sodas, so sleeping in that restaurant would be a terrible idea. That was day 1. I didn't even know about shelters at the time, but if I did, I still wouldn't have been able to make the distance without getting severe hypothermia.
I personally know no one, who has the fear of not being able to affort health insurance for yourself or family. As a European I can't understand how you can still have this system. It's medieval.
Hi Joshua, I’m 61 and I never worried about being homeless until the 2008 recession when I saw homeless people everywhere. I remained fearful of being homeless until I met a homeless man who has lived here in the Florida woods for 12 years in a tent with his dog. He turned down housing because they wouldn’t allow his dog. I deal with depression with hiking, music and prayer. I wish you well.
I feel for you, I have also fear for homelessness. I have no reason for that. You have overcome your fear, so be proud of yourself. I wish you all the best. 🇸🇪🇪🇪
Your voice is shaking when you talk about difficulties you parents came across. In Chinese Confucian, that's called Filial Piety. You care about your parents, they should be proud of you.
21 here and same fear, as my parents neither have good health nor income. It won't be easy but I'm confident I'll be able to help them, but the fear is absolutely global, most developed nations have both health issues and lower class issues sadly.
22 here and same for me. I look at the positive side, the main reason I’m concerned for my parents’ well being is because I love them. They raised me well and sacrificed a lot for me. Idk if I can say most families have these bonds, so I’m grateful I have them
The US have to fix their healthcare system. It's absolutely not normal for a rich country that its citizens all live in constant fear of going bankrupt if they get sick. I can't even imagine what feeling this must be.
One major political party wants healthcare for all and is willing to pay the taxes involved and the other party is much more concerned with self gain and self fulfillment and is not willing to help all the citizens by paying more taxes. To be fair though, the european countries that do healthcare well are much MUCH smaller than the US, and healthcare is a LOT harder with 360 million citizens.

I totally feel you dude. I'm also afraid of losing my dad one day. I lost my mom to cancer in 2015 (it happened suddenly with little warning). Ever since then, everyday I'm afraid of losing my dad, despite him being in decent health. I envy that you're able to financially help your dad too, as I'm not able to help my dad that way atm. Man, healthcare in the US is incredibly terrible. I live in Canada. I never knew folks in the US had to pay to call an ambulance or go to the emergency room until I watched people in the US film their experiences. The lack of security sounds like it takes up so much mental space.
One of the main reasons why I like your channel is because of how *real* *and* *honest* you are. It is motivating to see you make progress and grow as an individual. Two thumbs up here my friend =)
im canadian and this pains to hear me man, your fears are real though and its a bad system that such a hard working young entrepeneur like you should have to spend his lives work to save his parents life, or potentially not even have enough to cover it under health insurance. shit is unfair and unjustice.
Videos like these always seem to come out right when I need to hear them. I can relate with what you’re saying about fear of not spending time the way I want. Thank You.
As long as you are working on being your greatest version, you have nothing to fear Josh. Your parents greatly appreciate you. The bigger the adversity, the greater the legend.
Thanks for sharing this Josh! My mum was sick for years and I was afraid of the day that she would die. When she finally passed away im March 2017 it was hard, of course, but less painful than I had imagined. So I think the Stoics are right, when they say that our fears and imaginations are often much worse than what it's like in reality.
Hi Josh, Your words are talking to me, two years ago we discovered a tumor in my father's brain, it is a cancer. From this time, I see how heavy the treatments are and how he is changing over time. I understand how you feel, I mean, I really understand because my biggest worry is to see someone else dear to me having something like that, or get it myself. It is something really hard to face, to see your father suffering & changing like this and I still don't know what tomorrow will be made of but we have to move step by step and not over react too fast. One thing I can tell you from my experience: with his cancer, his lifespan was estimated at something like 5 to 14 months. And it is more than 2 years already. So nothing is decided, but what I noticed from my father is that he quickly accepted his condition and stays positive with it. This is his way to fight it and I deeply believe that being positive can really help A LOT. I don't know what to say more to cheer you up but, it is hard, really hard, and you will have your own ups & downs due to that as well and we have no other choice but go through it. You are doing the right thing at the moment and don't forget to keep energy & time for you as well because you cannot help people if you don't have anymore energy. That's a tricky balance to find, but you will find it. Good luck Josh!
Almost finished with my boot camp after a previous career, and wanted to share my fear with you, and it shares a relation to your fear. I come from a low rung is society, poor. My parents did everything they could to give me the opportunity to start my adult life better than they did. Naturally I squandered all of their efforts. But as a father now, their is no greater responsibility. Whatever greatness I may achieve in life, the base is always giving an example for my children to follow. At a certain point, you accept that the past lead you to this point, it’s up to you to pick up the torch, relight it since you burnt it out, and carry on leading the way. You can’t control the outcome, you just learned where you failed in a combined history of your parents short comings, to produce a better result for the next generation. Keep your head up, it’s the human condition. The learning curve will always be more rewarding than the perfect algorithm to solve life.
Well Josh everything DOES work. I'm 60 yrs and taking care of my 87 yr old dad who has alzheimers. Diagnosed at the beginning of pandemic plus he had another heart attack..it ends up flowing very well...there is a higher power involved with everything. Once u accept that, everything flows....
Everyone has their own fear, your fear is something I also have. The reality is too harsh at times. You just have to take one day at a time. Something I realized when my life went downhill a year ago. Inhale, exhale and take one day at a time! You can do this Joshua!
Hi Josh, Man, I really love your channel, I just discovered you today but I really like your calmness and how you offer the voice of logic, in today’s as you may already know, many people are in fact reacting emotionally rather than logically with whatever situation or conversation they may be in, reacting emotionally is never helpful for anyone as it never solves anything. I’m a gay guy so don’t freak out on me LOL, I know you’re not gay but man, so far, I literally love everything you are seemingly about, your calmness, cool, collective and have a depth to you that I really admire and like, unfortunately, these traits are not often found in many people these days and I find this especially true in the gay community, I actually despise the gay community because it’s all so phony and pretentious, for the most part the gay community has very little depth to it and I am a man who needs substance and meaning, I’m not meaning to blanket statement everyone and put them in the same category, but from my personal experience, it has a lot of growing up to do. Anyway, again, I know you’re not gay and that’s cool, but I can still appreciate and admire you just the same, from everything I have heard from you, in my eyes, you are absolutely perfect as well as handsome. Please don’t take offence to this, I just like to point out good people that I witness in this life like yourself. I find you to be a wise man and eager to expand your experience on your journey. I’ll now leave you with the following quote as sort of reflects what you were talking about in this video and I can only hope that it finds you well. Peace… Keep up the great works and messages. "It is only by going down into the abyss that we recover the treasures of life. Where you stumble, there lies your treasure. The very cave you are afraid to enter turns out to be the source of what you were looking for. " ~Joseph Campbell
I remember a professor recommended "A Guide to the Good Life" to me, and it was one of those books that really put things into perspective. It allowed for me to come to terms with some life struggles I was facing at the moment.
12:23 - ,not just you mate, the older you get, the more people you lose around you and it makes you think that your loved ones are treated the way you want them to be (spending times with them even when you are going through some busy periods etc.)
Great book that I will definitely check out, josh. Think Like a Warrior is another good book. My personal fear is loneliness in the long term. Sending good vibes to you and your family for good health
My biggest fear in life is becoming homeless, everytime i see a homeless person on the streets it freezes my nerves not like they scare me, but the situation they are in oof... nodoby seems to give even a shit about them and it's like if they're not even human beings and part of this society anymore
Thank you for opening up & book recommendations. I can relate to this fear in some way or another. All the best wishes for your father & to the many more moments that you're still able to enjoy with him while it's possible.
Would love to hear more book recommendations from you. Being homeless is also one of my fears. Expecially now. My parents work the kind of jobs that can't be done remotely. If they loose their jobs I will be the only one to provide money. I know this probably won't happen but it definitely makes me stressed.
its amazing how similar my own fears are. down to the T. I also did this exercise of imagining myself homeless as the greatest fear. I also fear going back to corporate. I also fear not being able to take care of my parents and/or them ruining me financially.
Your videos are real & down to earth-I can appreciate that in this modern fake world we live in today. Thanks for the book suggestions, they look worthwhile! Have a beautiful blessed day! 🥰
It’s so sad that the US would have a health system that would put its citizens through the choice of pay rent/buy food or get medical treatment. You’re a good man for trying to do what you can for your parents. There’s a wisdom to you that points to you having an ‘old soul’ and love how you still keep growing.
Sorry to hear about it, I wish you and your family the best. And don't even break a single sweat over Instagram profiles they are objectified and clueless on why and if they are miserable.
Thanks for opening up. My biggest fear is that I feel I might never be smart enough to be a great developer, maybe good but not great, especially being self-taught. I understand slower than everybody else. I stay away form JS frameworks and focus only on vanilla JS, jQuery, HTML and CSS. I feel like I am making progress but at a slow and steady pace. If I don't succeed, I ended up jobless and homeless and failure is not an option.
im only 21 and had to buy health insurance for my chest surgery. Is 500$ a month for a decent insurance that covers my surgery. It includes me and my parents
I lost my job and had to help my mother take care of her two widowed sisters who had severe health problems. After they died my mother's health problems began. I took care of her several years until she died. Sickness and death were all that I knew for almost ten years. The tough times were difficult to endure, but I learned to take life just one day at a time. Adversity is something we will all confront sooner or later.
I'm just a stranger on the internet, so perhaps this comment doesn't have a lot of weight but I wanted to say that your parents are incredibly lucky to have you as a son. A lot of people out there have not set themselves to the same standards you have and while you might feel that there's so much more you want to provide, what you've done so far is truly admirable. I try to follow the principles of stoicism as well and will definitely checkout the resources you've mentioned ❤
I thought my mom was fine and healthy until she collapsed one day. She was gone before she hit the ground. In some ways I think I'm lucky for never having to deal with the long term stress of taking care of older parents, but grinding without their support can be a challenge.
Josh - I love that you're making your own (moral) choices and looking for solutions while avoiding complaints... although I think there's a difference between whining and complaining and it's the former that's problematic. But: Don't you think you're being too hard on yourself? How are you going to have the time to build your future social circle if you hold yourself responsible for your father's well-being? I want my dad to live forever and all, and it's been hard just moving forward to figure out what I want. I wish you could stop giving time in visualizing your fears and invest more time dreaming about the best outcomes. You know it's our imagination that serves as the first step to materialization. Take care.
damn I feel that. Live in Chicago and ride the red line. I see all the homeless people sleeping on the el every morning. I realize that there is not much separating me from their situation. I used to think my work ethic would keep my alive. But now I realize that I'm one bad accident away from being homeless
My biggest fear is REGRETs. I already have some but forgave myself but for fuck sake I try now maximizing my potential and go do things. Fuck depression, fuck self loathing, fuck addictions, fuck wasting time.

Very well written. 🇸🇪🇪🇪
Acceptance is a stoic mindset. You are doing what you must the best way you can. 🇸🇪🇪🇪
Everyone has their own fear, your fear is something I also have. The reality is too harsh at times. You just have to take one day at a time. Something I realized when my life went downhill a year ago. Inhale, exhale and take one day at a time! You can do this Joshua!
Thats all there is to it
@@JoshuaFluke1 know that you have a community who supports you!
Every single fear can be boiled down to fear of death. It's all that is, fear of death
Your Grindreel videos are by far my favourites, nothing but truth...we all can relate with truth. Stay strong and keep it up man (Y).
Hi Josh,
Man, I really love your channel, I just discovered you today but I really like your calmness and how you offer the voice of logic, in today’s as you may already know, many people are in fact reacting emotionally rather than logically with whatever situation or conversation they may be in, reacting emotionally is never helpful for anyone as it never solves anything.
~Joseph Campbell
Good for you bro, and for your parents who have brought up a responsible son.
Your videos are so refreshing. Good luck with everything Josh
I suppose that my biggest fear is loss of freedom due to poor health or unacceptable financial situations, among other things.
A fear a majority of ppl in western cultures share. Do the possible preparations you can.
Shit happens. (We use that term in Sweden) 🇸🇪🇪🇪
What I really like about your videos is that you speak and sound very humble, great man keep the good work greetings from México!
Most people would have bailed on their parents. You are a good person.
He did lol.
@@Kuroganemk2 Yeah that comment didn't age well. I can't blame Josh for bailing, though.
Or a sucker, there are alternatives to shouldering the cost.
Great book that I will definitely check out, josh. Think Like a Warrior is another good book. My personal fear is loneliness in the long term. Sending good vibes to you and your family for good health
No worries about being lonely. Become ok with being with yourself.
1) fear itself
2) forgetting what I fear
Anxiety. I wish you all the best. Get tool to handle i. More and more people have anxiety in the western word. 🇸🇪🇪🇪
A lot of good philosophical ideas in this one, nice job Josh
Would love to hear more book recommendations from you. Being homeless is also one of my fears. Expecially now. My parents work the kind of jobs that can't be done remotely. If they loose their jobs I will be the only one to provide money. I know this probably won't happen but it definitely makes me stressed.
I have the same fear. My dad has had some serious medical issues himself and I’ve been trying to support him and mom as much as I can.
I truly appreciate your wisdom and advice Josh. Thank You.
holy shit same bro, i fear all those too.
feels relieving i'm not alone, as silly as it sounds
its amazing how similar my own fears are. down to the T. I also did this exercise of imagining myself homeless as the greatest fear. I also fear going back to corporate. I also fear not being able to take care of my parents and/or them ruining me financially.
My sympathies for your father. You do a lot of good work man keep it up.
Josh, you might be one of the most mentally tough people I've seen. I watch your vids a bunch when I go through my rough patches.
Your videos are real & down to earth-I can appreciate that in this modern fake world we live in today. Thanks for the book suggestions, they look worthwhile! Have a beautiful blessed day! 🥰
Very profound video. Thank you for the book suggestions! 🤙🏾
For anyone interested in another great book: Marcus Aurelius' Meditations is incredible!
We're lucky to have parents staying around out there with us in this life and they're lucky to have our back contribution with love ...
It’s so sad that the US would have a health system that would put its citizens through the choice of pay rent/buy food or get medical treatment. You’re a good man for trying to do what you can for your parents. There’s a wisdom to you that points to you having an ‘old soul’ and love how you still keep growing.
Thanks for the book recommendations!
You got this man
@@JoshuaFluke1 Thanks :)
im only 21 and had to buy health insurance for my chest surgery. Is 500$ a month for a decent insurance that covers my surgery. It includes me and my parents
How much if you paid cash?
Not having time’s a bitch too i hear you. I just try to accept the laws of the universe and find a way to embrace it.
My fear honestly is that won't be able to take care of my parents. I her you man keep your head up. New sub.
I understand the health issues are the baddest thing in our life
HOPEFULLY WE DO OUR BEST FOR OUR LIVES
I share your greatest fear and struggle with anxiety disorder as a result. Thanks for the book recommendations.
You have to learn how to point your family to social assistance, like SSI, Medicaid and Section 8.
Respect.
Sensible as always. Well done lad. You’re a great inspiration.
I appreciate that
You can only do your best and make the best decisions with what you know at the time. You can never second guess the future.
Very emotional and real.
Thank you.
I thought my mom was fine and healthy until she collapsed one day. She was gone before she hit the ground. In some ways I think I'm lucky for never having to deal with the long term stress of taking care of older parents, but grinding without their support can be a challenge.
I have the same fears + not earning enough money to start a family safely.
"If your'e going through hell, keep going" thanks, keeping that one
Awesome Vid
Thanks man I've somewhat similar Frears thanks for sharing and showing the way.
I'm not sure if I do in fact 'no da wea' I just do my best
@@JoshuaFluke1 haha you do.
Take care.
I have the same kind of fear, I'm racing the clock as well.
Thanks for sharing, Joshua. I appreciate it.
Monetizing the fear of not being able to monetize....The obstacle is the way.
damn I feel that. Live in Chicago and ride the red line. I see all the homeless people sleeping on the el every morning. I realize that there is not much separating me from their situation. I used to think my work ethic would keep my alive. But now I realize that I'm one bad accident away from being homeless
Time is the most important commodity in life, the sooner people understand that the better.
God damn dude. I am sorry. I hope life will sort out for you. I hope you dad becomes better.
For the lazy/not readers😂: There’s a daily stoic podcast. Amazing ❤️
My biggest fear is REGRETs. I already have some but forgave myself but for fuck sake I try now maximizing my potential and go do things. Fuck depression, fuck self loathing, fuck addictions, fuck wasting time.
You're doing great man, keep going!
I found this video very valuable, thank you for sharing Josh, have a good one.
Listening to this in class instead of working lol.
I know the feel
Not a lot of people can post a video talking about something deep like that.
So much respect for you. I hit the subscribe button. I hope it helps
Wish all the best to you and your family!
Time is the most valuable thing,, you can give
Dwelling on the negative future creates ANXIETY. Pointless. Let it go.
Refreshingly real. Great work man.
Read can’t hurt me by David Goggins
I did the day after it was released. Pretty solid.
