I'm not surprised Dan didn't realize this is just a demo until editing, it's one of the largest demos I've ever seen! There's like 20 levels in total, with how hard the last few levels are (e.g. the hanging gardens) it's probably gonna take upwards of a dozen hours for the average player to get everything.
I would love to see this as a full play through has been my thought for every one off wednesday game i've seen you post videos on. And this game is no exception
You can't spend coins in the demo, the demo's goal is simply to collect all 696 of them. Something does happen when you do this. The game doesn't say it, but it seems basically mandatory to know that the gem on the compass turns red when you're near an area with uncollected coins.
The animations on the little 3D UI elements, the music, the atmosphere. Gorgeous. I'm getting Rayman 2 vibes specifically, though that's definitely far from it's only inspiration, obviously. Absolutely beautiful to look at and listen to. I am enamoured.
You mentioned PS1 and I was wondering why it was the pixels were so precise Really like that they had a setting for that, I miss that look sometimes (for people who didn't play on the ps1, divisions are hard for computers to do and 12 bits to decimal precision wasn't much to work with so it can swap around a lot between frames)
When I saw it has elements of Sable, with the ruin hopping in a desert and all that, I went from intrigued to wish list in a snap. And then I saw it's more or less a free demo for a game they're still making. OK, I'll bite. Think the hook line and sinker will follow soon.
I should have made sure you hadn't played the dang thing yourself before recommending it! I don't know how I missed this video...! I will watch it now!
It's funny, I played so many N64/PS1 era games on emulator, since I couldn't afford the consoles until the PS1 slim, that for me the clean emulated look is the most nostalgic look for me. Of course these emulators weren't playable until the late PS2 to PS3 era or so, but they were so much fun I didn't care that they were graphically "inferior." And when I was eventually able to buy that PS1 slim I could only get a few games, so the Composite look is also really nice and nostalgic, despite the fact I HATE aliasing. They've really nailed them really well.
I think some of the platforming influences might be like Sly Cooper? There's also some Psychonauts in there. I'm also getting some Jak&Daxter maybe. I think this one just kinda pulls from All Of The Things and takes whatever it likes
If I recall correctly the team behind this game did the fan game yo noid two, with the closest analogue to the fishing rod maybe being the noid's yoyo. Wait a minute yo noid yoyo why haven't I seen that before.
Very cool-looking game, but I don't think I enjoy 3D platformers enough to power through the frustration of mastering the movement mechanics. I imagine this would be fun to watch someone speedrun, though.
yesssss, i've been following development on this game for a few years now, and it's a real treat to look at every time. i totally adore the more subdued, almost melancholy(?) feel of the environment and especially the music. very PS2 era on the vibes alone.
I may consider getting this if I'm ever in the mood for a platformer. I would like to recommend Arco to anyone that likes tactical rpg's with some unique mechanics and a very nice retro look.
0:10: Not me. It reminds me that games from _my_ childhood are retro now, not just games from before I was born. 3D games shouldn't be retro! 6:33: And if they are, more retro-inspired titles should find an excuse to implement a first-person viewpoint like so many of those PS1-era games did. Aiming a fishing pole or other weapon is a _way_ better excuse than the old games had. (I mean, in retrospect they were probably just trying to show off their 3D rendering tech, by doing something that would be impossible without it. But it's still silly.) 16:16: That's a cute way to do fishing without a fishing minigame. 40:49: Well, obviously. Everyone knows how quickly fish run away from you.
1:30 It's starting to sound like you're trying to say "it's like Mirror's Edge, but fun". 9:12 I still have mixed feelings about "retro" anything. It usually just feels like an art style choice, most of my interactions haven't felt "retro". Like you can make a clunky 3D N64-level shooter, but can you make it feel like Jet Force Gemini? Can you make your 2D adventure game feel like Link's Awakening? It's like how DOOM 2016 and the C&C remaster nail the vibe of their thing (which in C&C's case was because it changed basically nothing but graphics), but so many "retro" games just don't seem to land for me. You can't sell me nostalgia with graphics, you have to nail the reason I still fire up UT99 to this very day. 18:51 The tutorial is talking about move buffering... out of my league. 23:11 I really don't like the camera not following you. 31:38 Yea, not having the camera follow the PC would be a dealbreaker for me, if this was my kind of game.
Sorry, I only saw the last point in your comment and wanted to correct. Dan is accidentally holding the lock target button when he grabs those springs; you don't need to do that, and doing so causes that weird launch camera effect. I haven't finished his video (was around 35 min in) but I fell if he plays it more, he will intuit what the game is asking of him more easily. But yes, at the very beginning, the game feels difficult, yet immensely rewarding when you land the jumps they ask of you. And these are (lorewise) the training grounds, the place to practice, iirc.

Took me 16 hours to 100% it
You can see the little Banjo-Kazooie machine in Dan’s brain beginning to spin up😄
Dang, if this is the demo, the full game’s gotta be pretty great tbh!
For me, the hooking, swinging, and tightrope walking remind me of Sly Cooper.
the 3 ps2 sly games are great
2:07 BAAAYYLLEEee oh wait, nevermind, wrong game
Kept thinking the same thing
I mentally read the signature in that voice on every note. XD
I HEARBY VOW...
the fast-paced wall running evokes prince of persia to me, mixed with the less rigid expressive platforming of mario
While the sand surfing is a little reminiscent of BotW's sand seals, the kick-off of the music is still much more Wind Waker.
that catch animation is just oozing with style!
Your sense of intuition is on point with this game! I have seen many-a-struggle with the wallrunning mechanics.
this looks so fun already, but that catch animation is absolutely my favorite bit.
The music when you're traveling across the desert is very much like the Wind Waker ocean sailing music
Ok, this looks and sounds just delightful, and the platforming look fun as heck! Thanks for showcasing this Dan!

I'm here to spread appreciation for the little no at 21:35
The tightrope movement feels really psychonauts to me. I love it!
That was my first thought and the rails had me thinking Jet Set Radio
The spire-jumping thing seems...Sly Cooper, maybe? Didn't play a lot of platformers, was that a common mechanic?
This seems super charming! Really digging the music in particular.

Dan always finds the best games

Wait a minute yo noid yoyo why haven't I seen that before.
Finally, we get to dive in a game again, victory!🙌
It's like sly cooper.

A really nice game, fun to play and enjoyable like the times of old! I hope you will let's play it fully once it will be out :)
I may consider getting this if I'm ever in the mood for a platformer. I would like to recommend Arco to anyone that likes tactical rpg's with some unique mechanics and a very nice retro look.
This’s a free standalone game
Sly Crow-per?
The movement feels almost half between Jet Set Radio and Sands of Time.
Curse you, Bail!
Very excited at the idea of more
27:14 Feels a bit _Sly Cooper,_ I think. Tightrope, the trampoline mechanic, plus the scaling of poles, all point that direction for me.
That's one gimbled compas
the music is hitting me right in pokemon ruby and sapphire.
I'm feeling a bit of jak and daxter in the squash and stretch
The fish-catching kinda reminds me of Ape Escape. I had never heard of this game before but went onto my wishlist almost immediately!
Jack and Daxter for the platforming.
Really enjoying the funky mumblevoice they did for Bail :D
This is such a cool game, looks really fun!

Fiskar? Isn't the Swedish, or close enough? Is there some reference?
I have never Ever been this early to anything! Cheers, Dan!
This is really cool
The music feels very familiar, I'm not sure what it's invoking in my mind but it's very enjoyable
Ooooh it's got some shmovement!
I hope there's some way to get more then one Dan playing this at the same time....

I mostly got big Sly Cooper-vibes off the movement when I played this
Hey Dan & Carrie,
could you two show off a game on the Tilt Five gaming system please?
