I’m 60, started backpacking at 52, though always camped, hiked, etc. I’ve combated fear. 1st time backpacking solo I was anxious so got to camp waaay too early. Got to experience boredom. :) there have been other times I’ve been scared of the dark, and many others, very proud of my accomplishments. My first time backpacking in Yosemite a crazy storm came in and it was 18 degrees. I still did it and did not see another sole the entire time out there. I will never forget that.

I recently started hiking alone, and the first time I made so many mistakes that I actually didn’t go back out for awhile. I have gotten back out solo and it’s just so peaceful! I eventually want to start backpacking; this video is so inspiring. Love to see other girlies facing their fears!

Great video. I went through a similar emotional journey when I hiked a portion of the John Muir trail for my 50th birthday. I am a man and it completely exhausted me and I ran very low on water at the end. I sat alone and cried when I finally knew I made it. OMG. So hard but I want to do it again.

This was an amazing story! I hiked Clouds Rest last week with my college-aged son and daughter. We began at Tenaya Lake and took the left turn into Sunrise Lakes and camped overnight a half mile in at the first lake, before heading to Clouds Rest the next morning. I will copy your route (also solo) that starts in the valley, which is far more difficult but looks like so much fun!

Wow I didn’t think you would make it back in time. Determination! You inspire me to take the same route, except take the John Muir back down instead. Ive only done day hikes there and Im quite fearful of the backcountry.
For a while I didn’t think I was going to make it in time too! It was a great route. The climb was difficult but incredible! Snow creek trail is not a high traffic trail but the rest of it is! You will run into lots of people and probably not very many animals. I hope you enjoy your hike there!

Permit me to commend you on your solo Yosemite adventure. I appreciate your candor. The video was excellent. In less than two months, I will turn 70. Five years ago, I did a solo thru-hike of the JMT NOBO from Horseshoe Meadow. I have approximately five decades of backpacking experience, most of it solo. I assure you that the feelings and angst you felt, especially early in your trip, are things that I feel every time I do a solo trip. So I think those emotions are perfectly normal. Out of necessity, you did things you probably didn't think you could do. As you noted, meeting big challenges is how you grow as a person and gain self-confidence. Well done, young woman! I most heartily recommend that you thru-hike the JMT if you get the chance. That trail is extremely challenging but also incredibly beautiful and rewarding. You've got the right stuff to do it. All the best to you on future adventures!

It can be a bit unsettling to be out in the backcountry alone, but it's also quite magical at times! I do almost all of my backpacking so and I truly love it!

Overnight solo backpacking in wilderness is no joke, for woman or man. Many men don't get the anxiety women feel being out alone. On a solo hike you have to make decisions. I was really inspired on how made a decision didn't give up. Eack backpacking trip brings lessons and what to add to the pack list for next time. What did you eat besides Ramen? Try electrolyte powder so you don't bonk out. There are so many hiking groups if you truely want company on the trail. The backcountry of Yosemite isn't for the faint of heart and you did it! Thank you.
I completely agree, I always learn so much about myself and how to navigate different circumstances when I backpack.
I ate a freeze dried meal from trailtopia that night, it was already dark so I decided not to film it. both my GoPro an my camera are pretty bad at filming in the dark. I did use electrolytes, mostly in the form of salt tablets and blocks. They helped tremendously! ive considered hiking with others, however I really enjoy spending time alone and being able to take the trail at my own pace! Thanks for watching! more adventure to come!

this was still a really good video....yosemite is by far my favorite national park and place to go along with tahoe and telluride...i worked there for a summer and i try to go back every year just because i cant get enough of the peace and beauty even though most hikes im cursing at haha...the snow creek trail is no joke its like hiking upper yosemite falls (which u should 100 percent do the next time ur in the valley) but less miles and more elevation which probably makes it the hardest hike in the park going from the valley up..i came down it one time and was completely shredded. My friend and i started at porcupine trailhead on tioga road where a shuttle dropped us off went to indian arch then camped on top of north dome (sunset was incredible that night) then the next day went the rest of the way down and then hiked from there all the way to the valley via snow creek i think with me not drinking or eating much that day plus the 8 or so miles we had hiked going down the trail felt like an eternity it was soul crushing haha...also, i hiked from tenaya lake to clouds rest another time and camped on top which was the best day and night i have ever had hiking...seeing the lights from tioga road in the distance, the bazillion stars on a clear night and then the slight cool breeze all night it was just a moment ill never forget and ur right i hiked down from clouds the bext morning, great beautiful hike but going 6k down in elevation was rough so i feel u there lol...i stopped in yosemite valley got some water and def knew not to go down the mist trail the steps going down nevada then the hard steps on the side of vernal will get most people so i stayed on the jmt another brutal day when i was done i was sore for a few days...sorry for the novel but i can talk about yosemite all day. Lastly at the end of april beginning of may i plan on doing a 6-7k car camping trip across the country form wv to glacier maybe alaska crater lake yellowstone tetons yosemite tahoe sequia joshua tree arches bryce canyon zion telluride Rocky Mountains and a few other stops (hopefully the wind river range)..maybe do the PCH and hike the Hollywood sign again but God willing it should be an incredibly epic 2 months or so of just exploring! :) i also will be doing at least rim-rim hopefully as well but over 2 days...
Yes! There are so many trails is love to hike In Yosemite! I decided that I need to go back at least once a year. I’ve filled out a couple of permits for hikes this year. We will see if I’m able to secure any of them!

Awesome video, thank you so much for sharing your adventure.. a few years ago three of us (my friend and sister) backpacked from the valley floor to Little Yosemite Valley Campground, it took us many hours because the trail was all up hill, so I empathize with you on those up hill sections of the trail... So hard but so worth it when you see the beauty around you..

I hiked down the Snow Creek Trail and thought it was one of the most amazing trails Iʻve ever been on! The only person I met on the trail was a 70+ year old woman at the top of Snow Creek also hiking solo. She was amazing! I’m regularly asked if I’m scared hiking alone. A quote I repeat to myself daily: “Fear is a controllable emotion that can trick you in to a boring life”. You only have one life, so live it. When I was young I did the day hike to the top of Half Dome 3 times. The last trip the trail down off the mountain had me almost in tears because of my knees and leg pains. I can't believe you took the Mist Trail and did it in the dark! Glad you made it out OK.

I am a simple hiker with limited overnight backpacking experience in Yosemite, and all of it has been for Half Dome overnight trips. Still, I was able to visualize most of the trail with you, and found myself hoping you didn’t take the Mist Trail!
Obviously, as a guy I have nearly no perspective on getting your period while hiking. Whereas I know full backpacking trips require one to consider every item packed, a box of tampons likely now seems like a thing by a mere comfort. I also wondered if the ranger station in upper Yosemite valley (back section atop Nevada Falls) has some emergency medical aid including period product. It’s been 20 years since I have been there so I’m not even sure if it’s staffed any more.

I did have a few people comment on this video that the ranger station may have some tampons in stock. And looking back that could have been an option. I went to Yosemite in July. Never seen that many bugs in my life. So beautiful.
There were still quite a few mosquitoes around the valley floor, not ideal! But once I left the valley floor there were far less!
The Yosemite backcountry is AMAZING! The trails on top of the granite cliffs are unlike any other places I've explored. It's so encouraging to see another solo female backpacker out there crushing it and enjoying nature. I know this trip wasn't how you planned it, but what an incredible experience 😄

Right on. I solo'd from Cathedral Lakes th to the Valley this summer. My thoughts coming down the jmt into the valley were, I'm glad I'm not climbing up this rn. Props for ascending that trail and then basically running down. My knees were screaming along, as I watched.

Loved your video! I m 65 been hiking and back packing for 53 yrs and still get a bit antsy when I solo, even when I have Gus with me. It is totally normal.... I got a kick out of yur mishap with your cook kit, rest assured we all have our WTF was I thinking moments! My son and I did a back country hike, got way the heck up and gone , got to camp and realized we both forgot out spoons! It happens. Keep on keepin' on! Cheers!

From my understanding, the bears you would see mostly moved out of the backcountry and into the regular campgrounds due to the bear canisters. There used to be well known places in the backcountry where everyone lost their food each night. The bears had figured out ways to get to your food no matter what you do. That said, the bears who know how to live without human food are still there but less often seen. Black bears didn't used to be very dangerous. But that has changed and no one is sure why. Grizzlies are still more dangerous as a whole, but there are some crazy black bears. A little fear will keep you safe. It's like most things. Develop and use some skills and there's not a huge reason for the fear. Start doing some tracking and any remaining fear will evaporate. Let the bear spray keep emotions in check after that.
The rangers said that the bears scare very easily and they like to keep it that way. The bear canister help with keeping food in the back country safe! luckily I don't think that grizzlies are in yosemite any longer. After talking the rangers about the bears, I felt a lot more comfortable with being out there by myself. I didn't bring any bear spray, however I did read online that it was illegal to have bear spray in yosemite and possibly all of California. I need to do more research on that. All in all it was an amazing experience and I am grateful to have been able to go!
@@trailandtravel That's good to hear. One of the places where all backpackers used to have their food stolen every night was Lyell Canyon. We were on the Muir Trail coming into Tuolumne Meadows from Devil's Postpile. We knew Lyell's reputation and so we camped up on the pass that drops down into the canyon. We had decided to continue on the PCT for at least 200 miles (it became 300), but our food supply was low and we didn't have much money. The last thing we wanted was to feed bears our food.
It worked. Our food was safe when we got up at sunrise. We hiked through Lyell and there were dozens of camping groups. I kid you not, every single one lost their food to the bears. The legend was true. The bears had figured out how to get your food no matter what you did.
I'm glad the bears are wild again. My guess is you can probably do what was common back then: stand your ground, yell at them, throw rocks at them if needed. No bear spray needed.
I know the cannisters were a big part of the change. But I can't wrap my head around how rangers solved the problem when the bears moved into the drive in campgrounds.
Black bears have been getting more and more dangerous in places like Wyoming, Montana, and Alaska. No one really knows why. My guess is Yosemite rangers could probably help them figure out why and it most likely involves food.

I was lucky to backpack in 97 with a friend up yosemite falls past yosemite creek to 10 lakes. We got to grant lake. It was heaven zoom!! I wish i could do a small backpack trip before i die. I am 68 years young!😂

This video popped up as a suggested video for me. Gosh, it's been 10 years since I've backpacked in Yosemite. It was nostalgic for me to watch your video 💓 10 years ago, I also started my menstrual cycle at the beginning of a backpacking trip. I'm a heavy flow gal so I used tampons at the time. It honestly sucked so much. In 2019 I backpacked through Banff and by this point in my life, I had been using menstrual cups...such a game changer for me. My luck is that I start my cycle at some point on a backpacking trip. Menstrual cups are so small and compact that now, even if I'm not out backpacking, I just always have it in my toiletry bag. Also, something I've never tried- but in case of cramps- bringing a plastic roll up bottle that you can fill with hot water. Otherwise, I would have also made the same decisions as you did 💓
I also use a menstrual cup, unfortunately I didn’t have it on me. But I’ll change that for my future trips, for sure! It’s so light and compact, it’s worth carrying just in case! I am very stressed about it because it is the first backpacking trip I planned by myself and a million scenarios are going on in my head, so hearing your experience was so reassuring. This was also the very first backpacking trip that I planned like this so I can relate to the many scenarios playing out in your head. Nice trip thanks for taking us along. I did the Golden Trout Wilderness for 6 days a couple weeks ago and had a lot of the same experiences. Although I am a male and missed some of your fun I am 67 years old and out of shape so I did get a lot of the other pains. Oh and I ran out of gas for my stove the first day LOL . I bet you are anxious to get back soon. I know I am. In fact I bought some property about 5 days hike down from Mt. Whitney. I know I will be out there more.

Yosemite is my favorite place on the planet. I've been there a couple dozen times, and during all seasons. The only hiking I did was to the top of Yosemite Falls, which I did 3 different times. But I appreciate your taking me to a part of the Park I've never seen. I really enjoyed your video!

One issue with putting your head down and grinding out a hike to meet a goal, in this case the store, is that you missed the beauty of your decent. I hiked the JMT and remember the stretch of trail you were on, it is gorgeous. With this being said, you must have been in great shape! Awesome achievement!
I actually was able to soak up most of it, it was absolutely stunning! I just missed the last 2ish miles of the trail, but the mist trail was incredible and VERY steep! I am in great shape, I work out multiple times a week and walk almost ever single day. I was ready for what this trail had to throw at me! Thanks for watching!

Loved the video. For future reference, there is a Ranger Station in Little Yosemite Valley near the back packers campground. My gf got a tampon there once and they also have a emergency cot for people who get lost in the dark doing Half Dome without bringing a headlamp. You can sleep there and walk out in the daylight. The snow creek trail is the steepest trail from the valley floor and the only one I have not done. Lol Its on my list though for sure. Great video.

I did see the rangers station in little Yosemite valley, it didn’t seem like anyone was there. But I didn’t stop to investigate, I was already set on getting to the valley floor. The most trail is extremely steep and is comprised of many sections of big rocks. The John Muir trail is just a little bit longer, however more gradual and less rocks. Both trails will take you to same place, little Yosemite valley! The most trail is very beautiful and intense!
I’ve been looking into hiking half dome, but I think I’ll start by doing your path 1st, so thanks very much for sharing all of this great information! The Mist trail is a common way to half dome. I would imagine it’s much easier going up than coming down. Especially because it’s probably slippery most of the time. Thanks again for the info. You’ve got a new subscriber! Happy trails 🙂

Very good video, by a nice young lady. I live in Canada, and do a lot of solo hiking. I also have pushed myself to the extreme, and at the time, i wonder why i torture myself. But then, when i get discharged from the Intensive Care Unit, i feel a great sense of accomplishment. 😂 Keep up the good work 👏

So many young hikers with bad knees. Maybe eventually they'll stop putting fake seed oils in everything when everyone finally figures out why their knees suck and they're not even 40... anyhoo off topic... great videography, beautiful place. I hope to see it someday.
I don't have bad knees in general. It was just a lot of elevation loss with a heavy pack. I was just feeling the intensity of the hike, But in general I have pretty good knees. I own a personal training business, so joint health is a priority for me! Thanks for watching!

thanks for watching! It was a great experience all in all. so many lesson learned! Yes I remember the spot where I got water. its about a mile and a quarter from the top, and maybe a half mile before the trail spilts to Mt Watkins. It's in the valley before the last climb. just keep your eye out it's not hard to find. There are small stream crossings too that you could filter too.

I turned 60 in September and have been doing mostly solo hikes, started on the Appalachian Trail in the 100 mile wilderness in Maine climbing up Mt Katahdin(had no clue that’s where most hikers end there adventure😂). My daughters alternated going on my fall hikes and my oldest said she was done hiking with me (because I like to do a marathon a day 🤭, to see all I can see on a hike). Now my oldest wants me to go on hikes with her out west. For Christmas last year she asked what I wanted? I couldn’t think of anything off hand, then she asked, “do you need anything for hiking”? I said I want to go to Zion national park and do angels landing. So we did in May. Then in September we went and saw the sequoias and hiked kings canyon. This upcoming May we’re gonna do Yosemite which is why I’m watching your video. I’m training to do the cables. I’m so excited I can’t wait❣️ I had prayed and asked the Lord to help me lose weight, to which he said “move“. Now I have adopted a model, I read once, “running water, never go stagnant”. If you ever need a Hiking partner, let me know. Happy trails. My trail name is glory 2 God Hope a Walker or hope for Michigan. Still working on the Appalachian Trail over 2/3 of the way done my spring hike I will be finishing up Vermont and getting into New Hampshire. I will be hiking in the white mountains/Presidental range. I’ve which there are 24 Mountains 22 of them are over 4000 feet in elevation.🙏🏻✝️💪🏻🥾🎒🌄🏕️😮💨

Solo’s cool but it’s still better to hike with a buddy. Stuff happens. I’ve walked down my buddy who got altitude sickness and twisted his leg. I schlepped his pack but kept him moving to lower altitude. Bears in camp with a buddy is safer...Yosemite routine mid night, get up make lots of noise. Always preferred picking a trail creek side.... at least partial. Still cool! Great vid - miss Yosemite backpacks!
Sure, but if brining a buddy isn't an option.. Im still going to go! I didn't see a single bear, and I followed all the bear protocol. There was plenty of water, I wasn't worried. Thanks for sharing your story and ideas, and most of al thanks for watching!
@@trailandtravel in my experience even big bears frighten off in Yosemite. Only once midday this scraggly thin small bear came in to a picnic table site near trails end. Could not chase that bear off, probably sick and starving. Three guys waving and making racket didn’t have much food out, eventually left... I hear you about no buds available... really beautiful camera work, back trail country so beautiful... 👍

Maybe for the future you can stock your car up with stuff. So when you get back you can indulge in your car rather than trying to race time to get stuff at a store.
My biggest take away was to hike with my menstrual cup at all times. That alone would have made all the difference! I had plenty of food, just no way to manage my cycle.
I was on the mist trail a few years ago and try to "free solo " a short 1 pitch climb somewhere and got stuck,I was 59 then and cried like a baby for a couple minutes.I then found what you said on a break.I recorded the moment but never replay it to anyone.Solo emotions are the best and worst.If you ever got time check one of my videos from Yosemite.I only do them for the memories🙂 thanks

Great video. I love, love Yosemite. I've been fortunate to stay in Yosemite Lodge, the canvas tents of Curry Village, and the awesome camp grounds of Upper Pines (all these are in the valley), but I've never done a backpacking trip to the back country. Your video is really great, thank you for sharing your journey in such an authentic manner. Coming down the mist trail with tired legs is no fun! :( Next time, take the John Muir from top of Nevada falls, down past Vernal falls where it reconnects with the lower and easier part of the Mist trail! Well done however in all ways!
Yosemite is an incredible place, I hope to explore it more in the future! Thank you for watching! I know now that the JMT would be so much better than the Mist Trail, even though it's slightly longer. Hind sight is always 20 20.
My favorite was parking at Glacier Point and taking the Panorama Trail to Nevada Falls. Less crowds.

Wow! First of all thank you for sharing and being so transparent. Lots of respect for you going through what you went through obviously as a guy I really can’t fully appreciate how difficult that must’ve been! I definitely would have stayed on the John Mayer Trail, though instead of Coming down the trail. I think that would’ve been a lot easier on you and the views are still pretty spectacular from the John Muir over the top of the Falls. There’s not as much elevation drop either.
That aside you did an amazing job! Something to consider. If you didn’t have them it wouldn’t hurt to double bandages in your first aid kit as pads. I’m assuming that would work.

I really enjoy hiking and backpacking solo. It helps me get to know myself better and connect with my surroundings. But I had taken me a while to build up to doing a trip like this solo. You could absolutely work up to it if you wanted to.
Sorry you had to rush your way down to the valley floor. There is two ways down once you reach Nevada falls. Must trail I believe is shorter with a much steeper decent. Not sure if you would have made it on time if you took the longer route which I believe is part of the John Muir trail.. I hope to do Tahoe to Yosemite one day in the near future. It’s a bit over 100 miles. One of my goals when I retire. Did not hear you complain about mosquitoes. Let me know if they were a problem that time of the year please.
yes, the mist trail was much steeper. If I had to do it again id probably take the JMT to the valley floor. That sounds like an amazing hike! YES there were mesquites, mostly in the valley and just a little bit near Tanya lake. In one of my videos climbing out of the valley you can see them swarming me, it was rough but up at mount Watkins there were zero mosquitoes!
The important thing is that she got out into nature and had a good itme. Didn't she?
