A Charles Schwab checking account from the USA (no ATM fees, no foreign transaction fees, plus reimburses ATM fees) and a credit card with no foreign transaction fees leaves is a good mix for me. It would be much more useful to have a Bancolombia bank account while traveling in Colombia.
Also, for what it is worth, I just learned Davivienda (a popular bank in Colombia) does not charge a ATM fee. And on the subject, everyone should always decline any conversation rate proposed by any ATM anywhere. And when paying with debit or credit card, if you see dollars instead of COP on your credit card receipt, you got ripped off (Google Dynamic Currency Conversion for more info.) You always get the best exchange rate through your card company as long as you don’t have any foreign transaction fees.

Good info Ace. I didnt use BBVA because they limited withdrawals to $300,000 pesos per transaction. Colpatria allows up to $900,000 pesos per transaction, however, you do need a cedula to open an account with them.

The fees are def expensive. I used my card and purchased a soda and total the fees were about $9.00
I wonder if they would give you a credit card to build credit there 🤔

I don't know if this helps but I live in the UK and when I go to Medellin I use a card called monza no charges and you get the a instant update on the app so you know exactly what the cost was in your currency. However if you draw cash out the first £300 pounds is free but after that there's a small fee
