How easy is it to open a bank account in Colombia? Is a passport enough to open the account?
There are a lot of misinformation about opening a bank account in Colombia. We repeat it a lot but it's so important to keep that in mind, NEVER TRUST JUST ONE SOURCE OF INFORMATION!
Especially here in Colombia where 1 + 1 can equal 3! Always try to get different opinions, inputs, sources in general before making your mind up.
I saw a lot of Facebook posts about opening a bank account. Some say it's not possible without a Cedula (Colombian ID) and others say it is. What is the truth?
The truth is, it is actually possible to open a bank account it just depends on many different factors if it's going to succeed for you or not.
Those factors can be such as:
    - Is your Spanish sufficient to do it alone?
    - Are you friendly enough?
    - What's your clerks mood ?
    - In which area of the city are you trying to open the bank account?
And so on, there are a lot of things you can't even know about or change. Somethings are just based on luck in Colombia. It's a cultural thing you have to get used to when you plan to live here long-term.
There are some tips I can share with you in order to make the chance as high as possible to get a Colombian bank account.
Keep watching the full video in order to get all the important information.
Don't hesitate to contact us with any Expat questions you might have. No matter if you've got questions about Medellin, Bogota, Santa Marta or Colombia in general. We would love to support you on your journey.

With a Migrante Cedula I was denied at Bancolombia and Banco Bogota. Unreal, the takeaway is the employees are unsure of rules during the account opening process for foreigners.

Also if you have an account with BBVA, there are plenty of branches here. I actually opened one here and they use your passport to verify if you're a US citizen because it's connected to your social security card. BBVA is also located in certain parts of Europe. A lot of people go to Bancolombia because it's the most popular, but the largest bank is BBVA. Just another option consider if you're coming here for an extended time or planning on relocating here. Good video Sam and I've ran into problems with Bancolombia which pushed me to consider BBVA.

Thanks a lot. Bancolombia is spread thought Colombia. In Pereira I would also open a Bancolombia account. The comment I made is that I'm not sure which are the most popular banks in let's say Bogota or Cartagena. Because it makes it easier to have a bank account with the most popular bank in the region. :D

For americans is quite plausible to be required a w-9 or w-8 form depending on the income source to open a bank account. Specially for business purposes.
Credit score system does exist, (2 american companies keep the score here) but banks don't give out loans easily. And most probably require for the individual to be a customer for over 12 months.
There is a tax treaty between colombia and the US and some european countries too.
Edit: you do NOT need to be citizen or have an expat cedula. Ask at least 3 times for details in the same bank in 3 different branches.

  • @GBU61
    @GBU61 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a BancoColombia bank account. I still do not have my cedula but when I opened it, I had a fiador help me and got it done very easily. I do agree it depends on where you open it and who you speak with. I transfer money from my United States bank into to my bank here, I use Remitly, and with my debit card I go grocery shopping, but for everything else, I go to the ATM for my regular spending money. Credit is not very common here as almost everyone uses his debit card or cash.

It's not a nationalist of racist thing! It's for the fun of traveling and knowing the World and also living more affordable as it is getting expenssive to live in the USA! There is no racist philosophy in tropical Latin American countries. We don't have that complex!
