The MC6 Pro is awesome. I use it to midi control the Tonex, and 4 x Strymon pedals plus Morning Glory drive Red switch. Also use it with the Hotone pedal's expression function to control the FX listed above. Really great for live playing.
Another great video, Jason. Delighted to hear IK are making so much controllable over midi. Now Tonex + a midi controller really can compete with some of the competition's flagship units but at half the price. Or if you need even more effects, you could add something like an HX One into the mix and I really can't see how you'd need anything else.
Hey Jason! This is very helpful! I just got set up today with the new TX software. I would some more vids going through more MIDI setups with the Morningstar when you have the time. Thanks for all you do!
Thanks Jason. Can I use an external foot pedal like a switch 3 foot switch in the tonex pedal external control and use that to turn on and off the new fx like reverb and delay, in stand alone mode(without being hooked up to a computer?). Appreciate all your knowledge that you share.
Thanks to Jason for the informative video, and this is certainly good news that you can toggle effects on/off and even change parameters with MIDI CC. However, I still question just how useful this is as a pedalboard solution. With the new update, Tonex will have a very limited selection of delays and modulations to go with an expanded reverb lineup. However to both trigger and EDIT those effects in meaningful fashion, you would have to add hardware to your board. You're looking at something probably like the Morningstar MC3 or MC6, for probably another $200 and more real estate off your board roughly the size of Tonex Pedal itself. And you'd still be very limited to controlling maybe a few on/off switches with no knobs to change parameters unless you menu-dive on the Tonex. But if you really want delay on your pedalboard, wouldn't you better off applying that $200 towards a Boss DD-200, or something even smaller like an EHX Canyon? That would give more (and better) types of that effect, and dedicated knobs for the types of parameters relevant to a delay pedal. I think it's great that we get the effects within Tonex - it costs us nothing, and they sound good to my ears. But I just caution against people going down an expensive rabbit hole to make this amp capture device work like a "multi-FX" by throwing more gear at the problem.
Great points & questions @StormJH1! As you say, the new effects selection is limited, but it's clear IK isn't trying to make this a unit that does absolutely everything. I guess it all comes down to use case - I absolutely love my pedals, but if I took my MXR analog chorus, phase 90, and source audio Collider off the board to do everything in the Tonex itself, the audience sure wouldn't know the difference. So if I didn't already own that gear, a midi controller might be a smarter purchase - it would be cheaper, and would open up even more options. Plus I get one-click switching of everything rather than keeping up with my current tap dancing routine. Obviously not for everyone, but whether we choose to go the midi route or not, it's certainly a great time to be a Tonex user. Have a great day.
@ All fair points. Actually, after I posted, it occurred to me that IF you could set a single footswitch just as a tap tempo, that would get around a lot of the issues for using the delay. However, I don’t know if this is possible, and a lot of casuals obviously won’t be able to set that up.
@@StormJH1 I believe in another video Jason showed how you can set up tap tempo on the Tonex itself, even without a midi controller. So that's obviously awesome. Makes me wonder whether you could do that using the exp.input. I guess we'll find out in the settings after doing the firmware update. But yeah, I'm sure any midi controller should probably be able to send tap tempo to the Tonex - I'd have thought it's just a CC message like any other (although I didn't notice it in the list that was overlayed at 1:10). I believe morningstar units have their own midi clock, so even if you can't directly control the tap tempo over midi, you'll be able to sync the midi clock of the 2 devices. Like you say, though, falling down the rabbithole of midi messages definitely isn't for everyone. Cheers.
Hi Jason, very nice your videos and helpfull with great content. I´ve a question: I miss any Midi Function into the ToneX Software stand alone application. Do you know if IK Multimedia will add this functionality to the software? I would like use my Line 6 FBV 3 so that I can manage delay, chorus etc. Many thanks
Thanks for the video, Jason. I have a question. Say you have a 10-button midi controller, and you wanted to set buttons to turn on/off effects (e.g. button 1 chorus on/off, button 2 tremolo on/off, 3 phaser on/off, 4 flanger on/off, 5 rotary on/off, 6 delay on/off, 7 compressor on/off, 8 tap tempo, etc). Now, obviously, selecting one modulation after another will switch one off and the next on (i.e. selecting 3 after 1 will turn phaser on and chorus off). And you said that the Tonex software recalls each previous modulation settings if you change the modulation type. The question is, are each of those modulation settings stored in the saved profile, or do you have to include the desired settings in the midi commands for each button? For example, button 1 select chorus as the modulation type, toggle it on/off, rate 30%, depth 50%, level 50%, button 2 select tremolo as the modulation type, rate 10%, depth 60%, level 70%, button 3 select phaser, rate 20%, etc, etc. Hope that makes sense.
Great content, Jason; we can only thank you for the excellent work. I have a question that maybe you could clarify for me. If I save all my presets with the parameters set (but turned off at the time of saving), will the MIDI control work across all presets, right? Thank you!
I feel like tonex + hx stomp XL is going to be so powerful. You can offload some HX stomp blocks to the tonex (modulation, delay, compression etc) and still control them using command center on the HX stomp.
Using it w an hx effects now, because I LOVE the scribble strips and prefer tonex amp sounds to the ones in helix. Incredibly powerful combination tho!
@JasonSadites in the playlist of songs that I play live I use the same profiles in multiple presets. What I’m not able to do via midi CC is activate the effects on a single preset without them remaining active on the same profile in different presets. My Midi controller is a Boss MS-3. Do you have any advice? I’d like not to duplicate the profiles in the library. Thank you.
What I don't see is the program change bringing the selected mod with it. That is if I have a chorus on preset 0 and toggle PC to 1 the chorus stays on and does not have to activated by a separate CC. What am I missing?
Hi Jason, I'm using the Morning star MC6 and using it to turn sync on/ off as well as set the bpm with tap tempo. I set the global midi clock setting to Midi Slave, however if I change preset, the global Midi clock setting is reset to "off". Any reason why this is or any fix? Thanks
hello. I have hx stomp xl and tonex pedal conected via midi. How can i control ( sink) tap tempo of bouth pedals only to hx stomp tap tempo controll. Thanks!
Can I use the midi controller in an 'effect stomp mode' no mater which preset I'm on? Example: on the controller, Switch 1 engages the Delay - and it engages it no matter if I'm on Preset 1 or Preset 49.
You sure can! The CC message you're sending would tell the Tonex to turn on the delay regardless of the preset. One thing to bear in mind, though - depending on your presets, it might not turn on the SAME delay. For example, if your preset 1 was saved with a dotted 8th digital delay (which is turned off), and your preset 49 was saved with a slapback tape delay (also turned off), then when you hit your delay button it will switch on whichever delay is saved inside that preset. So if you wanted one midi footswitch button to give you a slapback delay regardless of what preset you're on, then you'd either need to make sure all your presets are using the same delay, or would need to send CC messages for every single parameter of the delay you want (ie - in addition to the on/of CC message, you'd want to program additional messages for delay type, level, time, feedback, etc). Hope that makes sense.
I have a MC8 with tonex, I cannot get it to change parameters I can change names which I can see on the MC8. I'm using windows 10, midi out from the MC8 to midi in on the tonex
Has anyone else noticed that when you are changing presets on the ToneX the Midi Clock setting switches back to off from Slave Midi? I have an HX effects that I'm using to send global tab tempo to the ToneX, but I have to reset the Midi Clock settings everytime I change a preset.
cool, hopefully the fbv3 works well with these new options. finally bought a usb midi host for it. line 6 seems to not want to give it an update to unlock it's features. "we need to focus on newer hardware" um... helix is a year older. 🤷♂😂 maybe dude will listen and push it up the chain and maybe it will get unlocked finally. else i'll have to sell it and get a morningstar mc8 that i've been wanting... shouldn't have gotten the blackstar live logic and just waited i suppose.
Every time I try to save midi click to slave mode it just goes back to off and when I hold the preset button to save it just seems to allow me to change name of preset rather than save settings would really appreciate help !
Great video Jason! So there is no option to just change the tone model in a preset? In a scenario where you're playing a solo, and with a midi controller I feel like adding a phaser, and 16 bars later I want increase the mix of the delay, and then 16 bars later I want to kick in a high gain tone model but I want my effetcs to stay the same! The last step is not possible by Midi right?
I think the easiest way to do that is just saving a slot with high gain and fx apart with the same configuration rather than configuring every effect activation via midi, at least from my point of view 😁
@@javimetalfan Yes and it might be the only way too.. I guess what I'm after is a way to have the Tonex function in a complete "Stombox mode" through Midi, But if tone models can't be changed through midi then that idea falls apart. :P
I was just thinking about this myself - if I'm on the clean channel with chorus, and then switch to a heavier sound, the chorus obviously turns off. As @javimetalfan said - the primary workaround here is probably making presets for the different stages. But depending on how clean your starting sound is, a workaround could be to use a high gain amp that sounds decent when the gain is low as the base tone. You may not be able to switch the tone model on a preset via midi, but you can change gain, bass, mid, treble, model volume, midQ, treble frequency, compression level, and much more. So say you start with a medium-high gain 5150 or Mark5, then wind the gain way back, and increase the model volume and compression makeup gain to make it as clean as possible You'd need to tweak the EQ to get a tone you like, but that would give you a clean sound at the right level. Then you can send midi messages for all the things you changed to get it back to your original high gain settings. That would essentially give you a clean & dirty version of the same amp inside a single preset, so your effects would all stay the same. I hope that makes sense. It could be a fair bit of work, but if you only need to create it once, and it ends up working exactly the way you want then it might be worth the effort. Cheers.
I've not seen an answer to this one , if i have a 6 button midi controller with each switch set from preset 1-6 on bank 1 . If i hit switch 6 on the midi controller to change to preset 6 and than hit switch 1 on the tonex will the tonex send a midi message back to the foot controller to tell it to change to switch 1 , otherwise the led on the midi controller still thinks its on preset 6. Obviously in this scenario you will have midi in and out cables connected.
Thanks Jason, great video and very helpful for setting up MIDI to turn on new Tonex effects! However, I think new updated software version 1.8.1 and Firmware 1.5.13 got another bug for MIDI CLK. I have updated it and looks that even I have set Global->MIDI CLK-> MIDI SL it is only working with MIDI CLK for TAP tempo once I am staying on a preset. Switching preset is turning this Global->MIDI CLK-> to OFF. Anyone got the same? @Jason can you coment on this or give some advice howto fix it?
That looks pretty powerful ... sorry if that's a dumb question but what about the tonex one. Sure ... it doesn't support midi ... but am i able to change parameters via USB in a live situation. Is the plugin already capable of that or will there be a "live editor" in the future? Of cause you can use the plugin instead if a computer/mac is already involved in the setup but concerning latency and logistics on stage it would be nice to do that (or even with the iPhone powering and controlling the tonex one while running a backing track for practice). Well ... i guess i purchase "one" soon anyway. Thanks for all of your work and attention to detail regarding this awesome product.

@@7riX7er The Tonex One is not capable of receiving midi over USB at the moment. Obviously we can't know if IK will add that in the future, but it doesn't look like it's going to be part of this update. So probably not for the foreseeable future.
@@swordio777 but is it possible tweak parameters of a running preset on the fly when hoking up to a computer ... i thought i read something about a "desktop editor"
@@7riX7er No, that's not possible to my knowledge. The Tonex workflow means you need to create the presets in the software on your computer, then drag it on to the pedal. But you cannot use the computer software to actually edit presets on the pedal itself. I believe a lot of people have made that feature request to IK, but I don't think it's possible at this time. If your intention is to access all 20 of the Tonex One's slots for live use then there is a partial workaround where you can connect an android phone to the pedal's USB-C port, and then use an app called "Midi Chief" to control the pedal. You'd need a midi controller that works over bluetooth to send the midi messages to the android device, which would then send them to the pedal (the m-vave chocolate seems to be a popular midi controller for this). HOWEVER, I've only seen this work for Program Changes (ie - switching presets) and I have no idea whether this setup would allow you to send CC messages / change parameters of the new effects.
All good if your using morning star..but you didn't get into setting up tonex correctly for midi for those of us who are midi newbies and use a different controller
Tonex one didn't have midi connectivity at launch and midi is a key difference between the two products. I think that would probably hurt their flagship pedal sales. Tonex one is already such a great value, I can't imagine any more features at that price point! Guess tomorrow comes soon enough, and we'll find out
@@pauljenkins8677would be too bad if that's the reason why they don't do it but what about the desktop editor ... would that be a way to implement MIDI changes in a setup
Did anyone else notice significant tone changes from 1.8? For lack of a better word, all models now have a "crumbly" texture, where the distorted character has less depth and nuance. It makes all the models sound more similar than before. Maybe my ears are broken this morning, but it sounds different (and not in a good way).
This Tonex update realized that there are errors... (bug) Mistake in global time! And error in the command Mid example command midi for delay ping pong...! Error in the command of expression pedal and others.

Nice mix. Not over the top. Pleasant to my 54 year old ears
У меня не работает передача midi global input 😢😢😢
Tonex one?
I hope they bring MIDI via USB
Did IK really not include a CC for the Tuner???
Yes, they did, CC#9, value toggle - according to the manual
Is it possible to send MIDI messages via its USB port ?
Yeah, i've been already using it to send MIDI messages to other units on my pedalboard via usb port
@@nicolascadavid6123do you know if the tonex one is also capable of that?
Wow!!!!
tonex one no midi update?
Tonex one didn't have midi connectivity at launch and midi is a key difference between the two products. I think that would probably hurt their flagship pedal sales.
Tonex one is already such a great value, I can't imagine any more features at that price point! Guess tomorrow comes soon enough, and we'll find out
@@pauljenkins8677would be too bad if that's the reason why they don't do it but what about the desktop editor ... would that be a way to implement MIDI changes in a setup
@@7riX7er Would be awesome if so! But yeah totally, midi over usb would be the only possible physical connection I believe
Did anyone else notice significant tone changes from 1.8? For lack of a better word, all models now have a "crumbly" texture, where the distorted character has less depth and nuance. It makes all the models sound more similar than before. Maybe my ears are broken this morning, but it sounds different (and not in a good way).
Nice profile picture.
* does not include Tonex One
This Tonex update realized that there are errors... (bug)
Mistake in global time!
And error in the command Mid example command midi for delay ping pong...!
Error in the command of expression pedal and others.
I cannot for the life of me find the midi codes!! Not in the manual. It drives me mad how poor IK are with software and manual layout
The manual contains the midi codes, starting at page 35 - just google the latest manual
