G&L Bluesboy Semi Hollow Tribute : Demo and Review

  • This is a G&L Tribute Series ASAT Classic Bluesboy, semi-hollow! This is a great T-style guitar with a few unique appointments, semi-hollow design and a hum bucker in the neck position. The neck pickup is a Paul Gagon designed G&L hum bucker and the bridge has one of Leo Fender's MFD pickups. Really great instrument, smooth and easy to play!
    The guitar was recorded direct from a Line6 Helix using the USB cable (yes, it's ok to do that people) with all of the effects and amp modeled by the Helix.

    I own this same guitar and felt the same way about the humbucker. I ended up wiring a 500K pot in the tone control and it absolutely blew my mind. Both pickups became incredibly usable and now the tone control has a much more usable range. I thought it would make the bridge single coil pickup “ice picky” or shrill, it did not. Now both pickups sound amazing and it was a simple fix that cost me about two dollars in parts.

    Other reviewers have said that the major tonal differences between pickups take getting used to, but it's what really ends up making the guitar. That middle position especially.

    I have this exact guitar in orange.....god I love that thing...I actually love the neck pickup but I seem alone in this. With a tubescreamer just slightly pitching in you get a growl out of the amp I have yet to hear from another guitar. The contrast with the bridge pickup is very nice when used on purpose. Then again, if you donkt like it just change it, choices enough!

      I do like the neck pickup, they are just so different! Hard to wrap my mind around sometimes, but as with any guitar, the more you use it the better you get at pulling out the strengths.

      I bought mine used. I really like both pickups. Some say the neck pickup sounds muddy but I don’t. I would say mine is punchy and warm. The 3 way switch, and 2 pots have a lot of play, and will replace them. Neck is very comfortable. Tuners seem to work well, no problems staying in tune.

    nice and honest vid, thank you! I agree with your opinion about the neck pickup. It's a bit muddy; I changed it to a Seymour Duncan SH 2n (JazzNeck) with a coil split; gives you a clear and bluesy jazzy tone and splitted with both pickups engaged you have a really sharp bite for chords in funk music...my2cents

    I've been considering this one. I have an Asat Deluxe Special. The one with no pick guard, flamed maple top and 2 of the large MFD Special pickups. My take is you don't need humbuckers with these guitars as the pickups are quiet and full sounding. I have been looking at the Bluesboy more because it is lighter and the tone is a bit different.
    I will tell you that the neck on the Asats fit my hand better than any neck to date. Not as slim as others but oh so comfortable. My only criticism is upper fret access. You can get there but other models are much easier to play in the extreme registers.
    I have other guitars and have bought and sold many over the years. These G&L guitars are really hard to beat. The 9.5" radius makes for very comfortable playing. Chords and bends are really easy.

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you're looking for a different sound this would get you part of the way! They are very comfortable to play, and the semi-hollow helps a lot as well.

    I subscribed immediately after hearing you talk about the problem brought by neck humbucker. As an amateur player, I don’t necessarily have a good sense of tone and may realize the potential harm when gigging, and that would be bad. Just sold one of these to help pay for a ASAT Classic S (alnico). I liked it a lot, but I felt it was the most replaceable of my guitars. I felt it was really made to be played with both pickups, with single pickups for "extreme" use.

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is a large part of me that agrees with you. The individual pickups are voiced so far from each other it does make it hard to balance them without adjusting amp settings. Middle position blend is great though!

    • @christebo7305
      @christebo7305 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you need to use the PTB system instead of full tone and volume. A higher output humbucker might help here too. But I suspect most would use the blended or bridge pickup most if the time anyway.

  • @klovig1
    @klovig1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Nice, I have one in the clear orange color. I replaced the neck pickup with a TV Jones classic neck pickup. It was still muddy until I replaced the pots with 500k value with a 470k resistor. It sounds much better now but still may swap the neck for something that balances better with the bridge pickup

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I had bonded with the guitar more I might have tried something like that. I tend to lean more to the ASAT Special but it's helpful to know a few little changes can make a big difference!

  • @sboy1955

    Thanks for the demo! I never gave it much thought but putting any single coil with any humbucker in a guitar would give you the issues you discussed to some degree. I have Helix patches for either pickup type but not both for that reason. I would think a TV Jones would work best in a set up like this.

      Thanks Rob, unfortunately I don't have the patch anymore! I have a bad habit of wiping out my patch lists and starting over every few months. My guess would be that it's the USDoubleVib amp model with a dual cab, Fender-y 1x12 and a 4x12 greenback. I crank the Volume and Master controls and then EQ to taste. The tube screamer I use in the drive sounds was the default settings though, at least I'm pretty sure!

      Great. A lot of people have issues with that. I enjoyed your take on the guitar. Just got mine, and I agree with you about the neck pu. Reminds me of the Fender pus on the 72 thinline. I kind of like the extreme contrast when they're both hot- makes a nice blend to my ears. But what you say about switching from neck to bridge can be a real problem in some situations!

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love the bridge pickup, for as much as the classic single coil sound is great, I can't get enough of the MFD's. Also really like the middle position where the pickups can work together, gives a huge sound! I guess two out of three positions isn't too bad. I tend to lean heavily on the neck pickup with most guitars so having something so dark makes it a little trickier. Still though, plays and feels great, just might need a different neck p'up!

    • @christebo7305
      @christebo7305 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have only heard G&L bass guitars having long term issues with neck stability. G&L, whether USA or imported, are very high quality instruments. Some of the Tribute models have mostly USA electronics and some of the hardware. USA made is generally better but it isn't because of fit and finish but due to 100% USA made components and electronics. Some will swear thrle neck feel is a notch better though. Plus the USA models can be ordered with any Jescar fret wire including stainless steel for durability. Buying used narrows the price difference considerably.
