Yep, if there is one thing I understand is how to be confused by Autodesk products. They are so powerful, it is a hard area to break into. Sort of like C programming. Everything assumes you already know everything, so lots of tutorials are hard to follow. Still have not learned C type programming.
@@paulmcwhorter C is hard to digest but it pretty much the only programming language I use. I learned python but I felt like I was skipping a bunch of steps. Python does a lot of stuff for you in the background with C every detail is left to the programmer.
Another 66-year-old brain here. I ran three software companies back in the 80s and 90s and was involved when the GUI on the Mac and PC (GEM and Windows) first came out. The design mantra back then (and ever since) was "selection precedes command" which meant that you always FIRST selected something by clicking with the mouse and THEN did something to it with the mouse or by clicking on something in a dialog box. Your tutorial is absolutely wonderful for clearly describing some of the ways this program breaks with all those conventions that have built up for the 40 years that the conventional GUI has been used (if you go back to the late 1970s and Xerox Parc and then the Apple Lisa). You very accurately described the journey I took prior to arriving at your channel: my son gave me a Ender 3D printer for Christmas; I built it and learned how to make Thingiverse objects (both activities, including using Cura, were a piece of cake); I decided I needed to learn how to make my own parts because 3D scanners just aren't good enough to create replacement/repair parts; I looked at all the CAD and modeling software and realized that I'd be able to do more if I could figure out Fusion 360 rather than learn a kiddie toy; I installed the software, I followed a few other tutorials, but then realized that even after hours of learning I couldn't even create and print a cube. So, thanks for an A+ first tutorial, and I now have some hope that I might actually learn this program before I die (at 66, "die trying" takes on a different meaning). John Meyer P.S. This thing still might be the death of me. Why? Because the designers seemed to have gone out of their way to do things differently, but without any reason. Case in point: center mouse wheel zoom. It works backwards from every other program in the universe. Why??? F1 doesn't bring up help, unlike every Windows program I've ever used or built. Why???
Your videos are great I have taken AutoCAD 2D and 3D and several fusion classes and my understanding has blossomed through your teaching style. Thank you!

One of THE BEST Fusion 360 Training Videos. There are many training videos for Fusion 360. But this is the best. Paul McWhorter, is really a nice instructor !!! Good start Paul, I will go through all the videos. -
You are a life saver . Thank you so much for the help.I always had these uncomfortable questions like "where sould I put it" "why it's not copying itself" etc. You really gave me a zero point to start learning .Thank you!
Excellent teaching techniques Paul. I've watched other ones that claim 'beginner' status...this is the best I've found so far at actually going right back to true beginner stage. Thank you. I'll use your lessons with my students at school. Great job!
This lesson has given me the confidence to apply myself to the task of learning Fusion 360. I am an absolute beginner but I can sense the rich possibilities that might lie ahead. Thanks for your careful explanations and your awareness of how terribly perplexing and frustrating it is to attempt to teach oneself without adequate introductory lessons. I am much obliged and hope to progress to further lessons.
Greetings Paul. Just wanted to write a quick note to thank you for putting this series together. It was an absolute pleasure to work through each video, and your thoughtful and methodical approach to teaching made learning the basics of Fusion 360 possible, and fun! I learned enough from your series that I've been able to model fairly complex replacement parts for my car, and they fit and work perfectly. Thank you!
Wonderful. Just the right amount of repetition to anchor concepts. Well organized and explained. Autocad site tutorials just have one do things without explaining the "why" very well at all, which makes it much harder to assimilate.
Paul, thank you. I have used AutoCad for over 20 years and started Fusion a year ago but gave up because it did not make sense. You break it down where other TH-camrs make jumps that are sometimes difficult to follow. I will now breakout my 3D printer and really start using it.
Definitely recommend this series if you are wanting to start learning fusion 360. Tip: if you can't find something he is clicking on, check the comments. The latest version of fusion 360 has moved a few things around. Most videos have someone commenting on where it is. Don't give up!
I like how you emphasis on helping us understand how the user interface differs from what has become the norm nowadays. I too have been stuck in not understanding where I were in the process.
You are a fantastic tutor. Starting with the basics like this is so unusual that it like a breath of fresh air. Plus I love how you repeat things to make sure we get it firmly fixed in our mind. Thank you.
Fantastic! I’ve struggled with other “beginner” tutorials on F360, but I’ve just finished my 9x9 grid and am now going to carry on with the series. Thanks so much 👍
I saw a 20 minute video on Fusion 360 and I was planning on skimming the whole thing. Thank god I didn't LOL Thank you for posting this, I can't wait to learn even more.
Thanks Paul. Just recently decided to try Fusion 360 again after giving up a few times. Your tutorial makes all the difference. I am actually "getting it" this time!
This is a great video that describes the basics of how to use Fusion360. Other videos just dive into making something and hope you'll learn along the way, but this video describes the fundamentals of how to use the software. This is what I refer to as "teaching", a concept lost in most TH-cam videos these days in exchange for flashy click bait presentations, titles, and graphics. Thank you Paul!
You got me started with fusion 360 (I know max well) and now I use it for things to 3d print often or now tend to goto it often. I started with the box that has the hinges, that one teaches everything well with the constraint parts of this and I feel decently confident to do simple things in it now. The box with the hinges would be the one to watch if youre only going to watch one.
I learn Fusion 360 from these video 1-2 years ago, now I almost forgot many things, so I just watch the video again for revision. Still the best tutorial video for Fusion 360
Thank you sir. I have been wanting to make 3D printing a hobby for a very long time but the learning curve is incredibly large. I will be watching all videos in this series. I just downloaded Fusion 360 yesterday and it looks some what different though.
@@DennisMurphey good day sir. where can i download the old fusion 360. coz i cannot follow the one sir paul whorter is doing. please help. i cannot find the sketch menu. its not the same as mine
Great tutorial! I have tried so many that rapidly skip around and I spend more time being confused than learning. Paul's approach of emphasising the basic building blocks in a structured fashion with repetition has already helped me properly understand so much. Thanks!
Love your videos. As you draw an object, one of the dimensions turns blue. Just type in the dimension and “tab” to the next dimension and so until all your dimensions are entered. No need to type “D”. Keep up the excellent tutorials. P.S. I learned this from Lars Christianson
Hey Paul, just wanted to take a minute to thank you so much for your videos. You got me going with my raspie, and now I'm learning fusion360. Don't know how to contact you directly but I'm wondering as a fusion360 beginner would you be interested in any detailed feedback from me as I go through your tutorials. Gary
OH my. I learned from Mr.Lars 's clip but he did not mention about how to show dimension at all. I felt gave up and nearly quit then I found your clip with 3d printer beside you. You are my best teacher from now on.
Lars is a real pro, and knows more than anyone. Just he is sometimes so good he is hard to follow if you do not have a background. Wish one day to be as proficient as he is.
"Don't rush into creating 3D objects before understanding the tools" - Are you inside my brain Mr. McWhorter? I do this all the time. LOL! Just a great tutorial that shows HOW to use the tools instead of just WHAT the tools do. Other TH-camrs just say "click her to use the dimension tool... click here for extrude..." Paul shows you how and why. Thanks!
You are a freaking genius, sir! Why didn't I discover this channel before? Thanks for explaining in a simple way something that took me weeks to understand!
This is just lesson 1 and it already have my eyes open on many things that could be done with fusion 360! It feels like I am beginning to get to know the app like the back of my own hand. Your method of teaching Mr. McWhorter is truly A class and you're able to make the complexities boil to reasonable simplicities. I have watched all your most excellent Arduino lessons and now it seems you have created yet another set of lessons of the same class. (Your lessons from "The Bible Boy" ARE THE BEST!)
Compared to other tutorials, your teaching method sticks better because of your explanation of "why" and and best practices. Love having you as a teacher, excited to finish another binge watch for me on this series after finishing your excellent Arduino series.
just a little tip paul, since I use AutoCAD/Civil 3d at work, you can click in the wheel on your mouse to pan around instead of selecting it at the bottom or using zoom to move/pan the screen
Mr. McWhorter, You're a first class instructor with this sort of thing and Lord knows we could use more like you, so please don't take my comment the wrong way: I'm an old CATIA hand from back when the older versions ran on the old risc-6000 UNIX boxes. I can honestly say that we used to do what you've described here with less than half the clicks and rigamarole you've walked us through.
This is one of the best tutorial videos I have come across so far. Thank you so much for not only producing it but also for being such a great instructor
I love you video man just a pointer or two when you first lay out that rectangle in the dimension you can tell this Dimension is highlighted before you even click you can put the dimension in then and hit tab to go to the other dimension so you set it up right from the beginning also after the first rectangle you can go up and hit rectangular array that will give you the other rectangles right there without even drawing anymore that you need
HIGHLY UNDERATTED, this should have millions of views!! Paul, thanks for the great video. Really makes it a lot easier to understand! i have linked this to my sons as well.. we are getting a 3d printer and will be using your vids!
Paul Really enjoy your guidance on 360. You are without a doubt, one of the easiest instructors to follow and I've tried many. One question, what model of 3d printer are you using for these demos? Many thanks. Bill
In the background is a Prusa which s low cost and rock solid. We also have a Raise3D N2 which is a higher performance, higher price one. Both are excellent machines.
I started work in a computer services dept at a university in England in 1986. We all pointed Autocad problems to one chap because we found its interface 'user hostile'. We held the view that this problem was Autocad's designers originating in tech-drawing on paper and WIMPs (Windows, Icons, Mpuse, Pointers) were new. You could feel an invisible t-square moving about so it was perfect for drafts-men and alien to computer scientists. As you mentioned I too kept veering away from it with the thought "It does not do what I want it to" Thank you very much for showing me how it wants to work.
Fantastic videos..I work for the president of the European Guitar Builders Association..Michael Spalt of Spalt Instruments formerly located in Los Angeles, and currently in Vienna. I am learning CAM and was frustrated with other software. I did have some training with Autocad products in the past, but have forgotten much of what I learned. Your videos are an excellent refresher..thanks for your interest and dedication to teaching.
Paul, Your TH-cam title grabbed me in a microsecond. This is exactly the emotions I've been feeling. I've been trying to wean myself off of 123Design which I've been using for 3 years. After lots of research I decided to retrain my brain to work in the free version of Fusion 360. You are just what I need. I'm with you Buddy! (I don't want to die though).
Hi Paul love your first video i'am on the wrong side of 60, just followed you to the letter and it worked had to have a few goes at it, when you re dimension to 3 inches ( 75mm) the rectangles join up....correct ? the one thing I have learnt through my work is KEEP IT SIMPLE....SIMPLE WORKS...
I'm not sure what is more amazing... The fact that you effectively taught me the basics or every other instructor suffers from a massive case of the curse-of-knowledge and is that much more horrible at teaching. Thank you dearly!
Paul, if somebody asks me why I migrated from ZW3D to Fusion 360? My only answer is, you should blame Paul for that! Paul, your Tutorials have successfully implanted Fusion 360 into my brain. Thank you so much, bro....
Parametric Design is where it is at! I can not tell you how many times I have had to start from scratch and redraw because I could not edit something. I love parametric design. Hopy people will stick with this new series. I dont regret learning sketchup, but we do get to the point we outgrow it.

I'm at a point for my business I need to learn Fusion360. Your videos are the right amount of specific without overloading the viewer, thank you!
in the country where i live if a man wanted to teach the way you are teaching, i have to pay them lots of money. bundle of thanks to you paul here it is amazing tutorials for free you are awesome
Great job!
Thanks Paul, I was ready to give up on learning Fusion 360 until I discovered your tutorials. Now I am sure I can make it work for me. Well done!
All of his videos are the best.. No matter what he teach, he always brings the standard and quality ...
I have just installed Fusion 360 and You sir, are going to be my official teacher. so i'm gonna start with lesson 1, and do a lesson every day.
Your instruction with the interjection of “why....” enhanced my understanding of the product. Well done.
Even after 2 years.. Paul, you're the best professor ever! I'm coming back here to review a few concepts! Thanks
Thank you!
Paul thanks I'm your age and I love that I can keep learning as long as there are guys out there like you.
Glad you are still learning. I think it is good for us to keep our minds learning like that.
Wonderful. Just the right amount of repetition to anchor concepts. Well organized and explained. Autocad site tutorials just have one do things without explaining the "why" very well at all, which makes it much harder to assimilate.
I trust in Paul McWhorter. Downloaded this series and now will try.
Whew boy, when you find out Paul does 3d printing tutorials after spending most of the year learning Arduino.... safe to say I'm excited!
Had a huge amount of things go on including moving but I'm back !!! Excited to start this course thanks Paul
I've given up for years....watching your series now!!
Thanks for this series Paul. You've helped me a ton in F360 where all others failed.
Thank you sir. I have been wanting to make 3D printing a hobby for a very long time but the learning curve is incredibly large. I will be watching all videos in this series. I just downloaded Fusion 360 yesterday and it looks some what different though.
They just changed the menu stuff but the guidance and methods will all work of us. plow ahead as I will too.
@@DennisMurphey good day sir. where can i download the old fusion 360. coz i cannot follow the one sir paul whorter is doing. please help. i cannot find the sketch menu. its not the same as mine
What an absolute revelation. Thank you so much. Nothing like laying down foundations before building something. Lekker. Dankie.
Great tutorial! I have tried so many that rapidly skip around and I spend more time being confused than learning. Paul's approach of emphasising the basic building blocks in a structured fashion with repetition has already helped me properly understand so much. Thanks!
Man! You're a genius teacher! You explain things simply. I am so happy to have found your video. Praise the lord! Miracles exist! :)
Wow, thank you!
Don't know how to contact you directly but I'm wondering as a fusion360 beginner
would you be interested in any detailed feedback from me as I go through your tutorials.
Gary
Really, really good side and top explanation. And the best is the watercooling for your 3d Printer in the background. Thx so lot.
Love having you as a teacher, excited to finish another binge watch for me on this series after finishing your excellent Arduino series.
after watching fancy starting u are the one who can get me started, thanks
Awesome introduction to Fusion Paul. This is exactly what I needed. Thankyou for putting this series together. Huge help.
Glad it was helpful!
just a little tip paul, since I use AutoCAD/Civil 3d at work, you can click in the wheel on your mouse to pan around instead of selecting it at the bottom or using zoom to move/pan the screen
Mr. McWhorter,
You're a first class instructor with this sort of thing and Lord knows we could use more like you, so please don't take my comment the wrong way:
I'm an old CATIA hand from back when the older versions ran on the old risc-6000 UNIX boxes.
Paul
Really enjoy your guidance on 360.
A TRUE beginners guide! thanks Paul!
The best intro video our there. Very thoughtfully done and filled in missing parts that other videos don't discuss. Thank you !
Thanks for the kind words. Glad to hear you found this helpful.
Thank you for posting this. This helped immensely!! Look forward to you other videos on this topic.
Great to hear!
Paul, if somebody asks me why I migrated from ZW3D to Fusion 360? My only answer is, you should blame Paul for that! Paul, your Tutorials have successfully implanted Fusion 360 into my brain. Thank you so much, bro....
Best one I've watched yet.
Coming from 2D Turbocad, I tried to get ahead of myself...unsucessfully.
This breaks it down nicely.
Thanks Paul.
Glad to hear your giving Fusion a shot. I love it! To me it's real power is the parametric aspect allowing easy modifications later.
Parametric Design is where it is at! I can not tell you how many times I have had to start from scratch and redraw because I could not edit something. I love parametric design. Hopy people will stick with this new series. I dont regret learning sketchup, but we do get to the point we outgrow it.
I learned so many things from you and applied in my projects as well. You inspires me a lot. Your dedication towards these engineering field gives me motivation to work more and more. 💞💞💞
It was very educational. I built my first product. You don't know how happy you made me. Thanks
You are such a great teacher, I am learning so much about Fusion 360, can you do a few beginner classes on Python?
Thank you so much Paul. You are a talented educator. That's how it's done :)
wow so amazing, iv been through many youtube tutorials some of them so slow and offtopic and some of them fast pace with no explaining the fundamentals, I think I have hit the jackpot with you,,you are a great teacher and lecturer thanks
this man is a treasure...such a good teacher.
