  • This Theory from a Mechanic episode Tom and Erick discuss how to determine if a vehicle is under-geared, gear calculators, and go in depth through the changes and results to our vehicles: Ford F150, Mustang GT, and the Dodge Challenger. See why increasing the rear end's torque does NOT necessarily mean sacrificing fuel efficiency with real world testing.

@@rearwheelperformance torque converters and stall speed is one thing I feel that a lot of people including myself don't understand to the fullest.
I mean i understand the basics but I'm sure there is a lot to learn. Thanks for taking the time and effort on making these videos.

@@MartinAguilar213 Yeah, automatics and torque converter stall dial-ins are definitely magical creatures that can be hard to master. Having tech discussions with auto trans builders and racers can get pretty in-depth.

I have a 1974 lincoln mark VI with 2.75 gears, 9" rear. I'm planning on putting 4.86 gears in it.

If it's running a C6 and a big block it will be nice off the line, but hard to imagine 4k+ rpm highway. A ton of torque, sounds interesting!

I have a 1987 chevy silverado short bed. 305 5.0 tbi and a 373 ratio on the diferential. I want to change it to a 410 would it give better mpg?

It may, depending on the transmission, tire diameter, how and where you drive the most often, and if it puts the engine in a more optimal/efficient rpm range. If it feels like a dog driving now, then more gear will usually help.

I have a 2002 3500 Chevy cargo van w/ the duramax diesel. Will a different gear in the rear help with mpg plus torque? What would you recommend

Re-gearing may be able to help. Diesels have such a narrow and sensitive rpm range, it is even more critical to work through the numbers. We would recommend looking for forums and/or Reddit to see if you can find other truck/van owners, with you same engine/trans & similar diameter tires, to see what ratios are working for them. Obtaining better highway mileage is usually achieved when the engine is operating within its most efficient and optimal rpm band.
