    Wow this gives a whole new dimension to 3D printing, filaments are not cheap and there's soo many empty bottles all around here in Korea, someone should make a machine that can do all of this automatically and would sell like crazy.

    This is awesome man. You don't know how much plastic you will be keeping out of landfills. I use too many plastic bottles and too much filament. This is a solution to both. Also this is 100 percent recycling. Here in the US if you send something for recycling half the time it ends up in a landfill. This is real recycling turning the bottles into something new without any chemical processes.

    Just wanted to let you know that these videos got me into the hobby. I just got my Voxelab Aquila X2 yesterday and I have already got it up and running. I’m learning how to hook up a raspberry pie, modify the hot end, and extruder. All of these new skills started from your videos. Thank you for sharing.
    I can’t wait to see the rest of the set up so I can start printing with my own recycled materials!

    Just an idea that popped in my head, to increase the filament's production speed : put a 2mm holed nozzle in the heaterblock, then, the filament will be thicker, theoretically, but by increasing the winding speed, the tension on it at the after the nozzle will increase, lowering the diameter to 1.75mm after tuning.
    With that system, it would be easier to quickly produce large quantities of filament, and even more with a 2.5 or even 3mm hole, the main point would be that the hole mustn't be to large or the pet won't have enough time to melt and get the correct round shape

    • @mr3dp
      @mr3dp  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not know, but it is not possible to convert filament 2 to 1.7 with this method

    Amazing tutorial! Has anyone tried to join several pet bands together before the pullextrusion process? I tried to do that welding they with a tin welder but it didn't work, the bands split up when go through the 1.7mm nozzle, apparently the soldering isn't strong enough to resist the pulling, moreover the bands increase the necessary tension force. In a comment I read about welding them with a heat bag sealing machine, but I haven't tried yet

    Nice...now I'm wondering if it's possible to mount the extruder on an existing printer so the filament could be used on the fly instead

    • @umbette
      @umbette 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not sure how easily you can push and retract the plastic stripe with a standard extruder. In this set up the filament is pulled rather than pushed

    • @mr3dp
      @mr3dp  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but it is not accurate and the 3D printer system must be changed

    • @ziad_jkhan
      @ziad_jkhan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mr3dp The printer head would still be fed in the same way though so there would be no need to change the printer system. The filament would originate from the PETG extruder in the same way as well but it would be on the fly. The speed of extrusion will have be in sync with the speed of intake in the printer head however but I'm assuming the latter can be read accurately and the extrusion speed can be controlled accordingly.

    • @ziad_jkhan
      @ziad_jkhan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mr3dp Might not be worth the effort though ;)

    • @umbette
      @umbette 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The printing is not at constant speed so the extrusion should happen at different speed too to be in syncro. Changing extrusion speed might lead at different extrusion behaviour with different widths. Perhaps having a"bigger buffer" in between but it does not solve the fact that the stripes should be welded together, whilst today you weld together the filament. You need multiple bottles per print

    this video skipped the heating the bottle up over the stove step that you showed in your other video, but yet you show the set up of the valve for it, and the puffed up bottle after it. That feels like an important step people might miss if they didnt see the other one. I still have soo many questions.
    where did you get, or how did you make the nozzle the right size?
    is this for 1.75mm or 2.85mm filament? have you made both?
    what temperatures work best?
    whats the pull rate of the spool? ( like cm or inches per minuet or something like that)
    what are the gear ratios of the gears in the puller?
    how are you joining ends to make longer strands of filament?
    how accurate and consistent is the diameter of the filament?

    You could take 2 strings from different bottles to make some interesting filaments

    • @yourlocaltoad5102
      @yourlocaltoad5102 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, but it’s best to take material from bottles made by the same manufacturer and made in the same colour to prevent having issues from one bottle having other additives in its filament than the other bottle.
      These bottles aren’t pure PET, but rather a mix of pet and a bunch of additives (like colourants, softeners, etc) and this mix differs in bottles made by different manufacturers, so mixing them might lead to filament that is inconsistent in its printing requirements (like temperature or its properties once it’s printed), so it’s best to always use the same bottles for each batch.
      But you can try adding pigments (like by using a marker or powdered ones from a painters store) to colour sections of your bottle string and get a bit more colourful filament via that route.

    • @mr3dp
