- Bruce Dr. Controlled Burn (Shelton, CT) 6/27/24
SHELTON, CT - On June 27, 2024, the CT State Bomb Squad, along with ATF, CT State Fire Marshal, Shelton Fire Marshal, and the Shelton Fire Department conducted a controlled burn of a home at 7 Bruce Drive. Officials deemed the leveling of the home by fire would be the safest way to mitigate the danger posed by many unburned and unstable fireworks that survived the fire that ran through this same home 5 days earlier on June 22, 2024 during a thunderstorm. Cause of that fire is still under investigation, but firefighters had to deal with massive amounts of fireworks exploding while battling the blaze. Neighbors were notified of the controlled burn event on the 27th and told to shelter in place or evacuate from the morning until about 4pm. The homes to either side of the house were protected by water streams and plywood. The safety checks started at around 7am and the home was lit off at about noon. The Shelton Police Department have mentioned that they expect to make an arrest in this case.

If I lived in the house next door I would be pissed off at Shelton FD! There had to be a better way of dealing with this situation!
I came here looking for this comment!
Read the comments people!!!
Those fireworks are treated as IED's. There ISN'T a better way, they're unstable. Unless you want to volunteer to go clean out the next house full of unstable fireworks yourself....
@@stevepotthast4911they are by idiots
@@ffjsbso would it be safe for the owners to go in and get their belongings? With live explosives still in there, probably not a good idea…
You have to have some pretty understanding neighbors to let that house 'go up' again. Having your house doused with high pressure water. IDK.
Most idiotic thing ive ever heard of in almost 30 years in the fire service
Insurance company most likely decided the original fire destroyed the home, would cost too much to repair it
If you mean storing fireworks inside your own home, I totally agree. I bet their homeowners insurance refuses to pay out on the loss due to this. All for blowing up fireworks on yet another 4th of July?? Dumb Dumb Dumb.
@@dock_yard1149unfortunately insurance companies cannot deny a claim based on stupidity. Standard homeowners policy covers fire, could only deny if it was intentionally set by the policy holder.
@@dock_yard1149clearly you don't know laws surrounding fireworks, and there storage laws. There is currently a large group of experts outside of that community who have launched a private investigation into this matter.
Both of those neighbors houses are going to be saturated with toxic smoke.
The house on the left started to go around 4:30, you can see it start smoking. Hope they sue the FD, PD, city, and AFT and everyone else involved in this clown show for any damage caused by the hoses and/or improperly controlling their 'controlled' burn.
@@robdog1245 looks to be mist.. from water... thats being sprayed from the hose thats behind that said house. if you look one minute before that youll see a hose line behind it before its been used yet. at 3:14 you can see them.
I really don’t understand why this had to be done. Would not be happy if I was a neighbor.
Hundreds of pounds of unexploded fireworks left behind and UNSTABLE, following the original fire (accidental) which set off some of the FW cache. If I was an abutting neighbor, I'd be DAMN GLAD the authorities planned and executed a SAFE removal of this hazard from my property lines. Wouldn't you??
@@dock_yard1149 I would think the fireworks would be safe if thoroughly drenched with water.
@@yuvgotubekidding That actually makes them UNSTABLE.
@@ffjsb thanks for clearing that up. 👍
No one could of forced the owners to get rid the fireworks??? I mean....I wish I could understand this concept of burning a beautiful house to the ground and possibly destroying the houses on either side???
So they are worried about the fireworks going off and damaging other properties? The best thing they could come up with is to light them on fire? Makes sense. No body ever thought to soak them in water and then just demo the house like normal?
Fireworks are explosives and explosives can still explode, even wet. The act of demolition can easily start a fire, even without fireworks present. The shear volume of fireworks present at this residential location posed an extreme hazard, not only to the people tasked with demolition, but also to the surrounding community. Safe demolition of the house *might* have been possible, but it would have been long and drawn out, leaving a large potential threat to the surrounding houses and any people who wander in.
Maybe people think fireworks are nothing to worry about, and in small quantities with careful handling that's usually the case. But, when large quantities are present and strict precautions are not taken, they can be just as deadly as military grenades or mortars. A mass detonation of fireworks could send shrapnel flying in every direction, hurting or killing people, even in their homes or vehicles. That's exactly why those massive concrete blocks were placed there, as a shield against flying debris.
@@JimTomatore So creating a large fire was the answer? The agencies involved are dumb. The US has bomb squads for a reason. The stuff shoud have been removed. Burning a house does not stop mass detonation or explosions from fireworks.
@@chazman4461 Another person heard from that has NO CLUE as to what they're talking about...

@@mikeymcmikeface5599 Son, go back to your video games. I've been in the fire service for over 40 years.
Would the neighbour have managed to get extra insurance to cover water damage from that much water sprayed on their house , i know it rains im not daft but not in that volume
It seems like venting the roof before lighting it off would have made for a more efficient burn 🔥 and possibly cleaner
That is by far the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen a fire department to. The people that came up with that idea and approved. It should be taken out of the office and sent to Siberia or something.
It was the ATF who ordered the house burned!
I am a firefighter from Siberia. Please don't send it here! Haha.

If they said put gasoline on an oil fire, would you do it? It doesn’t make it right they’re dumb.
It seems dumb to you because you don't know a damn thing about explosives.
The cement block wall they built in front of the garage wouldn’t of also been great along the 2 and 4 exposures protecting both houses. Instead they water damaged the house and took a risk
Who is paying for the flooded basement in the house next door? This seems to be a terrible idea from so many aspects of safety and property protection. Regardless of the agency that organized it. It's a great watch though.
Inexcusable! How do you not protect the exposures appropriately? The Bravo exposure most definitely has thermal exposure damage.
Did the family manage to get their belongings out that survived or did they burn those with the house?
Beautiful home what a shame
Biggest financial mistake that can be made, looked like a nice home, they had a huge amount of money tied up in illegal fireworks, home ordered burned down, insurance probably not covering the owners stupidity, and most likely have a mortgage, and facing jail time, and big fines!
Why not cut holes in the roof so the fire and heat could go straight up?
They’re VFDs. Not the real thing.
@@hounddog946 What?
They should have their heads examined?
I would be furious if I was their neighbor
I’m curious as to how many fireworks were in the house was it hundreds or thousands of fireworks?
Very large amount.
I would have liked a house like that. Such a waste!
You would have like a house that was completely destroyed by a fire?
@@juancena930aren't you smart one
This fire was put out quickly. The fire department had nothing to do with the controlled burn other than conducting it after the ATF and bomb squad ordered it because the garage was still full of professional grade fireworks that were unstable.
Hopefully, the insurance company paid for the control burn, and damage to the neighboring houses. Taxpayers shouldn’t have to foot the bill….
Clown show
I watched a controlled burn of a roach infested house..they trenched around the house added some accelerant, lit that then torched the house..Glad i wasnt their neighbor..
Hahahah what?
They did that to my sister's former home after she sold it to a Company that wanted to enlarge their plant. Watching that was a unique experience!
Great work, as always Keith! 😊
Thank you
How did the original fire start?
Have not heard cause yet.

This is very interesting never imagined they get a call like this
dont fireworks become useless when you soak them with water? Why would they need to burn the house down?
BATFE has standards in handling certain types of events similar to this. But by all public accounts on the board so far and what we've seen in the video. Some agency are currently getting deluged with calls and FOIA requests. Their's a large private group of experts in Fireworks and explosives. Who have started their own investigation into this matter. From the video of them burning down the home and their isn't any visible signs of 1.1G or 1.3G products detonating. Is a cause of alarm in this situation and how inexperienced fire and law enforcement agencies might want to conduct themselves in the future.
It’s like a fire buff second helping ! Great footage!
😂😂😂
What on earth are they doing, is this a fire drill? And did the neighbours agree to this?
Yes neighbors were evacuated the man had hoarded old volatile fireworks that were unstable and dangerous to unload from the house. You saw the previous fire, charges of some sort were filed and this controlled planned burn was done
Oh, so let’s have a play day and inconvenience the neighbors and displace them from their homes, let THEM incur toxic smoke…and, make it difficult for them to get up and down their street to live their regular lives, just for our self indulgence.
Controlled burns are suppose to be that - controlled and in a controlled environment, which this is NOT! How incredibly unprofessional and wreck-less of these thoughtless agencies. What a fiasco.
From someone who's NEVER fought a fire...
Whenever AFT is involved, expect a clown show, that's what happens when you bring in the circus.

To repeat my comment to the prior video, fireworks are stupid.
Fireworks aren't stupid. People that use them dangerously and illegally are stupid.
Totally agree. Go to a fireworks show, let the pros set them off. Personal fireworks ... WHY???
Were the dump tanks supplemental water or was the shuttle the primary source ?
Supplemental.
I honestly can’t understand all the armchair firefighting in this comment section. Oh I didn’t know this channel was for professional firefighters only. So it’s not alright to get questions answered and learn? Ok.
@@yuvgotubekidding Asking questions isn't armchair firefighting.
😂😂😂, theres already a private investigation launched into the handling of this situation. From outside of that community by real experts in fireworks and explosives. To the folks who made the call to burn the rest of this house down, i hope they followed their own ATFE guidelines and recorded everything in a investigation. Because my understanding of why they claimed to burn it down, makes absolutely zero sense. And by the final fire shows ZERO EVIDENCE of 1.1G or 1.3G products detonating. I know a lot of calls have already been made and FOIA paperwork is dumping into all involved.

Sounded like consumer grade fireworks, no mortars or anything like that. Why would they do something so stupid?
The house to the left had some of the vinyl siding melt slightly so they will have to pay a deductible to their insurance company because the fire company wanted to burn the house down 5 days after the fire was put out! Just needed tearing down.

For whatever reason, the house was "excessively loaded" with fireworks. It's asking for trouble - like lighting candles all around your house with a dozen golden retrievers inside, and then walking away.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
.
Connecticut had severe weather the days prior to this controlled burn and lightning most likely struck the house causing ignition of the large amounts of fireworks inside but in the initial fire call all of the fireworks didn't go off so they had a deadly situation on their hands because they had unburned fireworks in the structure that were ready to explode but haven't so they had to get rid of them by setting the house on fire again.
Any dumbass knows if you put water on fireworks they are safe to move

@@DIRTDUMMY1actually, I think asking the question is fair! If the logic is to control burn it because of dangerous explosives that haven’t been detonated, wouldn’t it then have been dangerous to enter the house to search and remove any belongings?

Hey how come I never see any fire incident videos from Bridgeport?
I have quite a few. Just a little farther of a drive for me.
And honestly Bridgeport is a quiet city when it comes to fires
@@jimbobcramdenNot exactly
@jimbobcramden I do not. I work in Bridgeport, live in Shelton.
They let the family get all of their belongings that survived out before the controlled burn. The fireworks inside weren’t your regular ones you’d buy at a fireworks stand. They were commercial-grade ones hooked to a detonator board that was compromised.
All that stuff that was going during the initial fire were consumer based products 1.4. There is currently a private group of experts looking into this matter.and in the coming weeks and months there will be a extensive over view and break down video on this matter. Gonna be a lot of questions needing answer's
What a laugh! That doesn’t mean that this detonator board is now a booby trapped, time bomb. Good grief. Just dismantle the detonator board…problem solved and all of this pointless drama avoided.

Wtf?
Wonder if his insurance will deny a claim
Absolutely they will, hopefully he didn't sign anything agreeing to allow this to happen. There's a community of fireworks n explosives experts who are currently looking into this matter. Someone is gonna look real stupid at their Depositions
This is unquestionably the stupidest thing I've ever seen a fire department or community do. Just ridiculous. They treated this guys fireworks stash like it was so e sort of bomb device. This a a case of boys playing with their toys. All they needed to do was go in and soak and surround and then put the fireworks in steel drums and haul away. To torch what was left of this house like this to get rid of some basic Class C - consumer fireworks is absurd. If I was one of the adjacent property owners I would be pissed as hell and sue the city. The most hilarious thing about it all is that they didn't even succeed in burning up whatever fireworks were in the back corners of those two garage stalls ...because all the debris from the burning house above basically buried the remaining fireworks and kept the fire from reaching them. This is just so ridiculous.
