The Cook Report - Dying To Look Good/Gladiators on Steroids S09E02 (1994)

- At the height of its popularity, the hit ITV show Gladiators also inadvertently popularised the use of anabolic steroids amongst youngsters keen to look ‘ripped’ - to have the body beautiful on the dance floor or in the gym. There were thousands of young, ill-informed users. Back then steroids were easy to obtain and the appalling side effects were little Known. The Cook report showed them. The team found examples of so-called ‘roid rage’ which had led to death or disablement and even murder. A highly successful, but clandestine British importer/distributor was infiltrated so convincingly that the boss offered to sell his business to the Cook Report. Cook then challenged the Indian manufacturer r who claimed that he didn’t know that his products were being misused and said that he would immediately terminate his contract with the importer concerned.
But he was lying, as a subsequent programme was to reveal. He had provided false paperwork and even packaging which replicated genuine products. This time around, the manufacturer turned from cooperative to violent and threatened mayhem if the undercover film of him was ever used. It was, but the Indian authorities were disinterested, claiming that if any offence had been committed, as an export deal, it had not happened on Indian soil.
Back on the Gladiators set, it turned out that the best known of the gladiators, Wolf - real name Michael Van Wijk - having denied all knowledge of steroid abuse, was a prolific user himself. That set a pretty poor example for the show’s young fans. What’s more, he was also shown to be a dealer and supplier through his gymnasium. Challenging a man as powerfully built and famously short-tempered as Wolf was a challenge in itself, but luckily Cook emerged unscathed. Wolf subsequently decamped to New Zealand and ITV instituted a regime of drug testing for contestants. Following the Cook Report broadcast and partly due to its findings, anabolic steroids were reclassified as class C controlled substances - so that it is now illegal to export, import, or supply them without a prescription.

After watching Brass Eye I find it quite difficult to take this seriously.
Channel Owner: There are video restoration nerds all over the internet and YT who can remaster these. Some are so good they can make the audio and video appear as fresh, flickerless and crisp as they aired in the day on a new TV. I hope, for all our sakes, you can get big enough and monetized enough to have these redone. It's worth it. These are absolute gold
I think the original footage has a charm of its own because you are viewing the original recording, which feels nostalgic. You'd lose that with jazzy modern editing/remastering. Also, are these at danger of copyright issues? I've always assumed that's the case, as prior to finding this channel, I wasn't able to find any full Cook Report episodes anywhere on the internet.
I think that all of these uploads thus far are perfectly watchable.

Out of order putting Wolf as a headline on this episode. He's a top bloke and meeting him well into his 60s, he's a good example of longevity and wellbeing. I've no doubt that processed and fast foods were advertised during the ad breaks of this episode when it was first shown. Hundreds of thousands in the UK have died from eating that since 1994

He may be a great guy and I’ve heard that from many people anecdotally. But its hard to get away from the fact that he’s publicly encouraged young people to take them after seeing they “worked so well” for a publicly loved and respected figure. I’m sure he doesn’t want kids to be taking them, but he influenced young people.

I think steroid users should be left alone if they're 18+ and not using them to cheat in competition. If they want to trash their bodies to look good, that's their business.

Good to see old DS Steve Homes on TV. The ‘nice man’ busted me with a 1/16th of hash back in the day.
I could also mention his bestie who was another copper on the Derby force who married one of my neighbors (a girl that grew up like a big sister and who’s wedding I attended). He was caught up in the tabloid scandal - despite his innocence - and, for his sins, remained loyal to the rotten lot.
Now I just got a slap on the wrists for a bit of pot, but amazingly when I went for my caution I was advised by his colleague (Bob Barnet) where to safely score my drugs and how I should always keep them close and ready to swallow. Great advice that kept me safe in my future drug addiction. I guess I should thank Steve and Bob as I ‘swallowed’ my pride the next time and avoided difficult questions (lol)!
That was before he was busted himself for 1/2 kilo of cocaine (allegedly for legal reasons) and let’s not forget that scandal in The Daily Telegraph where Derby DS was running a brothel and selling drugs on RoseHill Street in Derby )as well as demanding sexual favours from the ‘working girls’ down the cells).

I’ve been on testosterone injections (prescribed by my doctor) for 4 years and I’ve never felt better and I’m nearly 50.
I’m nearly 49 and have low testosterone…replacement starts for me soon so hopefully I’ll feel a lot better

I knew Mick Van Wijk at Wag Bennett’s gym in the early 1980’s.
Mick at that time had great muscle tone, but struggled at 13 1/2 stone. He had reached his full natural potential and was struggling to make any further gains in size!!

That’s not entirely true but you are correct in that it isn’t as simple as saying he took steroids and then beat his child to death. It doesn’t just make users violent. It’s nonsense. It’s a little outdated but it’s more that piece written and put together to produce and narrative. And in reality it’s to target the big name that they have come across at that time. No shit the gladiators did steroids. You know it goes further also. It speaks more on the so called random people they have come across here saying they do to look good in clubs. The Cook Report must have run out of ideas. Steroids were nothing new - even in 1994. Arnold Schwarzenegger, and all the other top bodybuilders, took tons of them.

Alcohol can be far worse for people and society, but there is a huge difference between 1 beer per day or a bottle of vodka everyday. It all depends on how you use things.

My friend took steroids for 2 years and got a enlarged heart and died most these guys on steroids will have something go wrong its only a matter of time. Even some pro bodybuilders are now coming out and talking about how many of thier friends are dying. Its got nothing to do with genetics steroids thicken the blood leading to heart attack and stroke.

I think people are forgetting that medical science has massively advanced a lot in the 28 years; since this first aired in 1994. Also, this episode was mainly about people buying unlicensed steroids and the dangers that the drug had on people like; bodybuilders, professional athletes and even professional wrestlers. A lot have gone on to have serious health conditions or even died as a result of the previous steroid use. As much as I loved Gladiators; as a kid, some of the glads in the years that followed this documentary later went on to admit they took steroids to bulk themselves up to have a good physique for the shows.
Yeah because they used to take silly doses and overtrain to fuck, no one is healthy at 4% body fat with veins popping out of there head

Steve Holme . that name brings back memories. I had to go to court for allegedly supplying steroids way back in 1997. He turned up wearing a blue jacket with DEA printed on the back. That gave everyone cause for a good laugh. They tried to sentence me on grounds of possession. There is no such offence. Fortunately I had Brian Batcheldor with me to "Save The Day ".60 hours community service for intent to supply. In all the years I've been around steroids I have never, NEVER come across anyone wanting to use steroids to get a bigger/better body. And as for steroids being more dangerous than heroin, go tell that to the millions of people that have used them . oh, and thank you again Brian Batcheldor for helping me steer around the sneaky rats that lied in court. I also want to add that this is possibly the worst work Roger Cook has ever done. Yeah the guy used roids, but he also worked hard in the gym and had a hard, strict diet. An example Cook probably should've followed instead of ralphing down a cheeseburger on top of his ivory tower. People who don't bodybuild or powerlift don't understand the massive amount of hard work and dedication you have to put into it. And if I happen to be genetically gifted to where I can more easily build muscle mass than another guy, how does it make me more special than that other guy if he bridges the gap with roids? As long as he isn't using them to cheat at a competition, I don't really care.
