    I worked in racing during this period, and one thing I remember from that time was hearing that Pipe returned over 100 passports to Weatherbys in the course of one calendar year. That came from someone who had connections to his yard.

    Red Rum would have been destroyed if Ginger didn't buy him. He suffered from a bone disease Pedalostitus. Ginger cured him by training him in the water off Southport beach. And he looked after Rummy til the day he died. 22 yrs. That's loyalty.

    The Yard had a high tech laboratory. A former champion jockey, nearly got sacked, when he went in there to talk to the staff. It was off limits to everyone in the yard. Racing people in the 80‘s certainly had their suspicions about what was going on there.

    A damning report. The way Pipe ran his horses was a scandal. No less so was the Jockey Club ignoring his high wastage rate and the suffering inflicted on the horses he trained.

    Martin got serious results, the horse often ran up a sequence of wins, went up high in the handicap and so therefore were not worth keeping if their chances of winning were seriously diminished.

    It was only at Royal Ascot 2023 that trainers are now required to trot their horses up before the course vet to prove they are sound. Strict records of meds are kept, and many drugs like lasix which are legal in most other countries are not legal in UK or Ireland. New tests for EPO came in 2000, with equine and human drugs tests being improved all the time, so much so that several English jockeys fell foul of tests in France in recent times. Stricter testing in France was thanks to Lance Armstrong et al.

    I worked on race courses as a tic tac man and the amount of times I’d heard Pipe staff saying “Just bowl along and hammer it on the final circuit,it’s not long for the knackers yard so it’s no loss” Then I would see them placing huge bets on the horse and it wouldn’t be seen running again until it was sold and then it was usually pronounced DEAD later on.

    First trainer to use interval training which hardened them up better than those doing a canter once a day and needed a month between races to get over the shock of a race. Only so many times an athelete equine ,canine or human can go to the fitness well. Remember going on a stable tour to another trainer and every other horse was on box rest.

    There was a lot of jealousy towards Martin Pipe. The fact is that he developed training methods which were regarded unorthodox but definitely not illegal. He placed his horses superbly well, many races won using front running tactics. The quote from the vets totally vindicate Martin Pipe.

    I'm an athlete and over training is a sure fire way of escalating health issues - horses are no different. Flesh and blood takes time to repair irrespective of any 'modern' methods. Pipe is wrong about owners deciding on races - they respond to the trainer's advice and pushing - Pipe's. He is a disgrace and horses will run until they drop - his argument about them not running unless they enjoy it is false. He is a liar.

      They trained horses that would last years longer than Martin Pipe and were far better trainers of chasers than Mr Pipe.
      I suggest you look at the losses of the above then at Mr Pipe 70% justify that?
      Listen to the vet on the seller winner at Southwell.
      Mr Pipe was the cheap and cheerful end of the market and he says it he does care if they dont come back.

    hate the thought of horses bursting blood vessels or getting other injuries - but that often happens when horses turn up at the track unfit...something Martin cant be accused of as he had them fitting fit, involving vets in more blood testing and swimming and schooling the horses intently. Martin's a decent guy i'm sure of that, he also wanted winners and the sight of scu being half a circuit clear was an everyday occurence for years!

      Yes this show absolutely destroyed Martin Pipe's career!! He has been champion National Hunt trainer 15 times and had Peter Scudamore, Richard Dunwoody and AP McCoy as his stable jockey. By the time he retired in 2006 he had saddled 4183 winners including 34 at the Cheltenham festival including two Champion hurdle's although the Gold Cup did evade him. He also won the Grand National with the Freddie Starr owned Miinehoma. He also had some success on the flat and had six victories at Royal Ascot. Looking back on this programme its claims have been mostly disproved and "The truth, though, was that Pipe was just getting his horses fitter than anyone else, knew precisely when they were healthy enough to do themselves justice, and ran them in the right races."

  • @michaeljohnson5365
    @michaeljohnson5365 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Yes sadly lots of horses end up getting put down after there careers have finished or are demed not good enough to compete and then end up being turned into dog food and cat food its a really horrible business

  • @BradyPires7

    Why does pipe say why would he want horses coming back the following year? Ok in flat racing obviously top class horses mostly stay to 4 or 5 tops then stud beckons obviously 3year old retire too but jump racing c'mon lots of horses go until 12/13 year olds if healthy enough. He didn't expect 4/5 year olds coming back the following season? Ludicrous
    He was never my favourite person in racing back in the day
    In my opinion Jockey's rode for him to become champion jockey as they would ride so many winner in the summer/ autumn most of the horses unbackable anyway. I feel for the beautiful horses and also the owners because hopefully mostly they love these creatures and not using them as cash machines

    • @seanscanlon9067
      @seanscanlon9067 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Because his owners were at the cheap end of the market when buying horses and they as owners and he as a trainer ran horses at the lower quality end of racing, such as in sellers and claimers when the horses are put up to sell or claimed after the race, so if another owner or trainer buys the horse then it will change hands and not go back to Pipe's stable.
      As Pipe became more successful, he started to attract owners who had the money to buy better quality and more expensive horses, which meant that as a trainer he could then compete at the higher quality end of racing and less so at the lower end, where horses he ran in sellers and claimers not going back to his stables will have accounted for his higher turnover of horses in and out of his stables.

    • @suemaher5282
      @suemaher5282 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      David Johnson was a major owner with him and wanted horses of better class in better races and actually transformed that yard. They had great days with Well Chief to name one. When David died and Martin retired his son David took over. Seeing this makes me realise racing has come along way. Horses running 3 times a week and over hurdles and fences on hard ground that would not happen now. Funny way to describe a yard as a factory as the reporter said sounds horrible

    • @davidmclachlan6592

      It's fairly obvious from this report that Pipe was so obsessed with numbers of winners that this would override the wellbeing of the horse.

      @@davidmclachlan6592 Except that it isn't.
      Horses do not win unless their wellbeing is sound and this report highlights a few odd questionable examples from a yard that probably had close to 200 horses a season that in total ran in the region of 1000 races a season.
