Hindi Medium addresses the social phenomena/issue in India where people who speak English are considered to be more intelligent and sophisticated than those who only speak in their mother tongue and not English (which is of course rubbish). That's why the parents wanted to admit their daughter in an elite English medium school and in doing so they also become poor so that their daughter get admission in an elite school using Right To Education (RTE) quota.
This is a must watch the film which showcases the social issue and mindset of the people regarding the English language and much more...

Hindi medium schools are where all subjects are taught in Hindi language. And it might become tough for students later on in life during college or work, if they have studied all their subjects example science or Maths in Hindi language.Colleges/Higher education have their syllabus in English and it will be tough to understand the same concepts if kids have studied the terms in Hindi and not in English during their schooling. In India , English is the official language in most private or government institutions/companies.

Light skinned and English speaking skill are associated with upper caste people in India. Britishers when introduced English education they had a theory to teach English to elites and it would create a rippel effect, causing English to become sign of sophistication and elites. It's also called infiltration theory from top to bottom. Just like certian accents in Britain and I guess in USA as well considered more classy than the others. The general language has never been then language of elites in all over the world. If it's not language it's about accents and other things. Else how would elites differentiate themselves from the common people. In Ancient times when local used to speak in Pali, Sanskrit was the language of elite. Today English is very part of Indian culture. In schools most boards have three language system. But the primary education is essentially given in vernacular languages. But most higher education courses are in English so it creats difficulty for many people later in their life when they have to face the difficulty of dealing with a language.

To understand this film one must be acquainted with the various class systems of India. As one becomes more urban, distinctions become more complicated than mere caste or creed. One of the measures of urbanity and culture is (unfortunately) fluency in English. Naturally this has roots in India's colonial past.
The British as rulers naturally prioritised English over Indian languages, thus those who were successful under the British regime were those fluent in English. The class of successful professionals and top government officials, for the most part thus came from this subset of people. This privilege passed on to the next generation as well, especially as with a diverse country like India, English was seen as a neutral (non-regional) language. These people thus act as gatekeepers of culture, and make up the old money/elite.
There is also a class of extremely prosperous small to mid-sized traders/businessmen, who have tremendous amounts of money, but have traditionally been content in running their shops/trades after attending local schools. As they often tend to lack fluency in English or are educated in Hindi medium schools (medium of instruction = the language in which subjects are primarily taught), popular perception (especially amongst the elites) is that they are yokels.
This division is exacerbated (albeit to a limited extent today) by caste: the English speaking elites were the teachers/professors/professionals, traditionally the Brahmins, as well as rulers/military men, traditionally the Kshatriyas. These are the two highest rungs of the caste system. Thus the ability to speak in English also (initially) perpetuated the caste divide, keeping the Vaishyas (traders) and the Shudras (lower castes) outside.
Even today, the elites come from the same select schools, generally return from attending top universities abroad, and seem to acknowledge ability only in those who have a similar background.
This movie isn't as much about cultural confusion vis a vis American culture (most elites in India will disdain American brands, and conspicuous consumption -- it's trying soooooo hard, which is in fact even shown in the movie). This story is about class and snobbery. Do watch it, though. An excellent snapshot of Delhi.

Guys, you made me emotional just by reacting. This movie brings back memories. It's about right to education of every child. Getting high-end education is not easy as you guys might know but in India, it's a real privilege. You will know when you see the movie. I recommend getting some idea regarding this issue from an Indian.

This is an amazing movie. It is about the parents trying to get their daughter into a good school where English is the medium of instructions - which means all the subjects are taught in English. Usually, students studying in Hindi medium schools can't speak English fluently and are seen as illiterate and of a lower social class when they grow up. This movie is about the extremes the parents went to when they couldn't get their daughter an admission, they decided to live in poverty so that they can get a chance for admission through a lucky draw which has limited seats for students who cannot afford the high fees and are given a chance to study at a good school and put a stop to their family's poverty cycle. Please watch it, it is so well done. Irfan Khan is amazing as always and Saba Qamar did a great job too - She is a Pakistani actress and this was her first Bollywood movie.
