      But they’re terrible...there’s so many actually good headphones he could have made a video on...I actually bought these too and they’re just bad, bad headphones. Bad harsh plasticy sound, too uncomfortable to use for extended mixing sessions. Plastic is cheap and creaks. Sad.

Because the cables were the primary concern since I'm usually pretty rough on my headphones and I'm glad you nailed that subject because cable ends are always first to go sour for me. Definitely a good purchase if you're low on cash but wanna splurge on what you find important being: Quality and durability, at an affordable price.

    A great explanation of how these sound is that the EQ is set like a curvy W. Bass is curved up, mids are higher than most casual headphones, and treble is higher, balanced between the mid's peak and the bass. This makes bass nice and punchy, highs are clear and light, but the higher mids make it sound harsh at first compared to other bass-focused headphones, like a lot of cheaper earbuds or Beats headphones are. Once you get used to that, you're good to go and things sound really clear because of how much detail the mids add. Gaming sounds great due to the mids across the board, but I've found different music preferences can be iffy because mids are used so differently depending on genre. Lots of hiphop hardly use mids, so when it's there it just sounds muddy. Same thing with some rock and metal, though classical, acoustic, and jazz LOVE mids because the composition is written to use all three registers.
    One major complaint that I never really noticed is how the soundstage (perceived width/broadness the audio) is thinner than most studio quality headphones in music, as I just don't have the training to hear that kind of thing. That said, it DOES make a noticeable difference in gaming. It's like using a directional soundbar for fake "surround sound" compared to genuine 360° 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. It's still directional, and you can still tell where things are based on good sound design by the devs, so it's better than nothing - but when you prefer/ are used to genuine surround sound-or in this case, a wide soundstage-it does sound worse. Similar to how you love 60hz/60fps to begin with, but as soon as you get used to 144hz/120fps, 60/60 is really not enjoyable.

    I tried these in a store and compared it to SHP9500. They sound alright. Some people say they had too much bass, I don't think so. But I do think the highs on these aren't good, It's too metalic not matter of too much. They're narrow sounding, and somehow they don't have sub bass extended like an open back, but this is closed back lol. upper midrange is kinda shouty.
    Also zeos's praise for I think zeos praise for the M40X is strictly with earpads replaced.

    • @andibrema
      @andibrema 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they are both very good headphones for very different purposes. I agree with you that the treble on the M50x is not their strong point, and they certainly lack the way more spacious, more natural soundstage of the SHP9500 due to their closed-back design. However, the Audio-Technica are better in a noise-sensitive environment, like recording or even commuting. Furthermore, the M50x do, in fact, provide a near-neutral low-bass response. Notice that bass volume may decrease due to poor fit.

    • @andibrema

  • @discoHR
    @discoHR 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Thank you for the review, Marques. I bought ATH-M50x the other day after watching this video. Just to be clear, these are the most expensive headphones I ever had. Everything sounds different on them. The sound is warm, clean and balanced across audible spectrum. The bass is also clean and there is more bass than I expected from monitoring headphones. BTW, I'm not a basshead. There are some sounds I never noticed before and there are some that sound completely different. I'm not blown away by the sound quality but I'm not disappointed either. I'll have to relisten my entire music collection with them. :) I usually don't like loud music because I don't like the sound pressure but on these I can go all the way to 100%. I still tend to keep the volume at around 75% tho. Isolation is very good. Sound leak is next to non-existant at 75% while there is a small amount at 100% but nothing that would bother someone in the same room. The only negative I found in this very short time is that they're not the most comfortable headphones I have but they're not the worst either. I'd say they are in the top 3. So far, so good...
    These are great monitoring headphones, perfect for music production because errors such as frequency clashing are immediately noticable no matter how small they are.

If you want good sound quality, do it on Mac or PC with a good DAC (I use blue AudioQuest DragonFly but there are many others out there) and lossless sound source (Apple Music supports lossless, many other music streaming services do too). Of course, use wired headphones with DAC, not wireless.

    People praising//wanting to buy the audio technica m50(x) should seriously consider the Beyerdynamic DT770 32ohm first. Better//bigger soundstage and imaging(positioning), more refined details, more neutral(better, more forward mids), more bass quantity and extension/control, sparky natural sounding highs(opposed to the artificial machine like highs on m50(x) ). Don't buy into the hype, buy the DT 770 32ohm! However, the m50x has nicer styling and removeable cables. Yet, the DT770 is available with XLR cables(removeable), sold by modders. Just here to keep the peace.

    Nice review! I've been using Audio-Technica as my Closed-Back headphones for 13 years straight, starting when I set up a Demo Studio at home for Recording (Bassist here, and I needed someplace I could Record for both friends' & "profit projects" as well as my own Musical Ideas) and found the ATH-M30s a great set of "Starter 'Phones" as well as a set I could also use for overall Music listening, late-night headphone-based Bass Practicing and TV watching.
    Somewhere around '09-'10 I stepped on them when the cat ran between my feet, upending me and caused mass destruction to then, and took the opportunity to upgrade to the M50s as they were on sale at the time (an aside: the "Better-Half" has professed the I've "been crazy" to spend what quality headphones cost, but after spending a few hours listening to her favorite band's music through them, both the 30s & 50s 'suddenly' wound up on her Amazon Wishlist. ;-) ...

    • @ianperge7331

      ...and even though I have a New-Old-Stock set of M50s (when I purchased "Dr Better-Half's at the insane price of $90 to clear out stock for the "X" series, I grabbed a 2nd set) the M70x have really caught my... ears, and closer to neutral audio reproduction is better in my book. I've seen refurbished sets as low as $199 and new at $249, so given those price points and the quality of the M70x's, what would be your thoughts on my possible new upgrade? Thanks for any thoughts you have to give!

    According to other experts, the ath-m50x actually sounds slightly different from the original ath-m50. The bass is slightly stronger by about 3 dB and the treble is ever so slightly reduced, which most consider is an overall slight improvement to the sound quality because the original ath-m50 has been criticized for the highs being a bit too sparkly and harsh at times.

    • @gombie72
      @gombie72 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dont mean to dig up a 9 year old comment here, but since Ive been rocking both sets of cans for the past decade, I feel the need to give my opinion. I think everything you said was true, but the m50x still at times goes a touch too sharp on the highs. if you have sensitive ear drums, these are not for you. Im 50/50. Some days, I dont mind the sharpness, and it still blows my mind after over 15 years of listening through over ear monitor headphones just how much detail can be heard for so little money, but some days the highs are just a touch too much, and listening to sharp voices can definitely ring the brain a touch. That being said, most of my days I can wear these m50x's for hours on end without fatigue. I would definitely recommend getting some nice sheepskin angled earmuffs for them, as well as a cover for the top band. My OG m50s, the cable got yanked and broke, I soldered on a new cable, the headband imitation leather delaminated, so I reupholstered it, and the wire between left/right broke from travelling too much, so I ran a new set of wires for it. They still work, and look super cool (have some huge microfiber/memory foam earmuffs for them) but the sound quality is just a touch lower than the x's. All this said, If I never wore another pair of over ears ever again, I would still be happy with the x's. I am still blown away every time I wear them. They just sound amazing.

    • @lronSausage
      @lronSausage ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gombie72 I've had both the 50 and 50x for years and i like them less and less over the years. There's way too much clamping force even after years of wear so it hurts my head, and ear cups aren't big enough to go around my ears so they just press against them, and also causes my ears to sweat which further increases the level of discomfort. All the padding also dries up and cracks into a million flakes in just 1-2 years. I guess you can replace the earpads, but the headband is much harder to fix. This is terrible quality. This has never happened to any of my other headphones so i find this inexcusable. They are so overhyped by everyone on youtube. Maybe they were good back when they were first released many years ago, but there are so many good options now, like some really good sennheisers from drop. I also can't go back to wired after going wireless, the freedom is just too good. Wired is only relevant if you are the listening-to-music-sitting-on-a-chair-in-front-of-huge-amp-and-dac level of seriousness. Bluetooth has come such a long way. I enjoy listening on my sony wf-1000xm5 earbuds way more and i basically never touch my m50x or my sennheiser hd580 with fiio amp and dac anymore except once in a while when i want to do some sound comparisons.

    Got these headphones in the mail today. My thoughts: Produced the background sounds in a song really well and it felt like the audio was more 3d dimensional because I can hear the audio "move" in my ears. In terms of clarity of the sound, I thought it was pretty average. Nothing special. They required a much higher volume level to give me the right amount of volume. So what you're mostly getting with these headphones is the 3d audio.

It's really what kind of material you like. And yes, they fit the M50X and are easy to change. You can look through some reviews online if you aren't sure.

    • @TFSimple
      @TFSimple 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      LilyBean It really depends on the person. I changed them because the original earpads pressured my ears, which began to hurt after a while. The HPAEC940 (velour) one doesn't do that. They are soft, comfortable and bigger of course. It doesn't put pressure on my ears anymore.

      TFSimple That's good to hear! I really want to buy the m50x, but comfort is very important to me. If I do get the m50x, I will probably modify it like you did which is why I asked how comfortable the modifications are. If they only make a slight difference, then it's not worth it to me and I was going to look for other headphones instead. Since you said they don't put pressure on your ears, I think I've made up my mind and I will get the m50x (with new earpads). Thanks for your response!

    I've had the M40x for years till they broke (weak prone to cracks hinge flaw now redesigned by AudioTechnica since 2016). While I get them fixed I bought the M50x. First impression was mixed, out the box they are heavier in sub bass, brighter in lower/mid treble than M40x - this is the well known 'M40x is flatter' difference, and very true. Here's the thing about M50x, since it is brighter it also much less forgiving than M40x (like Sony MDR7506 - bright=highlights flaws more, esp at higher volume).
    After some burn in, treble is mellowed a bit and as I type this I'm listening to hard rock/heavy metal and *loving* it! Lots of low end slam, a wall of mids/guitars and smooth treble. (An amp is not required, but good clean power makes any headphones better - these included. You can listen louder without clipping or even harshness)
    Last thing - it is very easy to make these two cans sound almost alike with EQ. The main difference is driver size, but power handling is the same. I'd say just buy whichever better suits your budget, and EQ them however you like.
    I'd actually added a port on my M40x to open the sub bass a bit, so the difference is even less apparent for me.

      Are you more of a bass head?
      Sony headphones tend to emphasize low end even without their "Bass boost" while the M50s have a much more balanced soundscape.
      I'm deciding between this or the Sony WH-CH700Ns.
      As I feel the strong bass will be great for listening to hiphop tracks but the M50xs would be better for higher accuracy for producing beats or listening to a wider range of music genres.

    I got my set of ATH-M50X headphones today, and I was waffeling a bit over if I should return them and make do with my old(ish) set of Marshall Major headphones.
    Boy, am I glad I didn't! They offer fantastic sound (I know it's a cliché by this point, but I really could hear details in music I'd never noticed before, like almost inaudible whiskers on the hi-hat).
    Music sounds nice and crispy, and the headphones have a really nice balance between bass and treble.
    One thing I did alter, was swapping the leather-earpads out with some made of velvet. I wear glasses, so I'll take the extra comfort if I can get it.
    I can't wait to test them out with my turntable tonight (the main reason I bought them). 😊

    The M50s are seriously becoming the next Beats from all the hype.

    • @kevinzeng9606
      @kevinzeng9606 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** It is when people ask for opinions and first thing that people recommend say "M50x" are the best under 200-300 blah blah and turn a blind eye on other brands and models. Even at over $150, there are much better options that are technically and sonically much better.

    • @markb3961
      @markb3961 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Kevin Zeng There are better options, but it really depends on the type of music the end user is listening to. Since most people are looking at replacement for Beats, the M50s really are one of the best for the type of music that Beats covers (hip hop, edm, pop, etc.). You wouldn't recommend them for acoustic, classical, etc. because that's covered by open headphones like Grado 225i and Senn HD598, or any number of AKG products, but I doubt anyone in the Beats market are listening to that kind of music on a regular basis.
      Then you have completely subjective opinions since the quality between them is so close that it just comes down to preference (M50 vs Amperior vs M80 vs XS vs Fidelio X1 vs etc.). Then you get into on-ear vs over-ear; open vs closed. Then you have comfort preferences, as the M50s are very comfortable compared to, say, Shure SRH840. Then you even get people comparing the M50s to stuff way above their price range (M100, DT770, etc.). Then you have isolation, which stuff like V-Moda don't do too well, and stuff like Shures sacrifice comfort for (that ridiculous clamping pressure).
      The M50s are great to recommend because they're a great all-around pair that covers the Beats market better than most, still sound great with other genres, are super comfortable, and are pretty fashion-neutral. Honestly, there are not too many headphones in the closed-back on-or-over-ear sub-$150 range that have the combination of sound quality, comfort, durability, and neutrality of looks that the M50s have.

    • @kevinzeng9606
      @kevinzeng9606 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ***** I don't disagree with you. However, most people do recommend these as "professional" mixing headphones. And when Audio-Technica brands them as the M50 (M as in monitoring) people get confused and just believe that these are the best at any price for every music purpose (pleasure, professional, etc)
      Comfort is very subjective, even more subjective than sound I would say. Both the Amperior and the Fidelio X1 are sonically and technically more competent headphones than the M50x and there are graphs to show that. Sure the M50s may be better than Beats, but even the new Beats (2.0) have some products that do sound quite good and bassheads should prefer Solo 2.0s > M50s.
      It is only when people have not heard better that they make these bold statements. The M50x may be the best thing you heard, but definitely not the best by far, even in its respective price bracket and there are measurements to back that up.
      When a TH-camr has over 2 million subs says that Beats suck and M50x are the best even at $300, people are going to believe that. Whether it be true or false.
