When you are sleep deprived, your energy expenditure should be optimized. So, if you are a social person during these long tourneys, try being less social. Nothing wrong in going to your car and taking a short nap too between matches. Whatever works. The takeaway is that when your energy reserves are low, don't waste energy on irrelevant things. Conserve it!

I totally agree with this. I even notice on league nights that if I get picked to play towards the end of the night, that it affects my play. If time and life workout I try to get a nap in before I go out because it might be a long night. Sometimes we are there till midnight during a workweek. It's harder to focus and also harder to keep patience because you are kind of just wanting to get it over subliminally.

I was recently recommended to read "Toughness Training For Sports" by James E. Loehr. Awesome book. One of the first things it talks about is what he calls "Ideal Performance State". I'm 63... being rested and just feeling good makes a big difference in how I play.
I play on a Sunday night 9-ball league that played the summer session, (usually doesn't). I have a Sunday golf group I've been playing with for over 30 years and I won't be playing summer session anymore. Especially on really hot days I just can't do it... don't even want to be at pool. Lesson learned.
You're also right about working out, I do a half hour to an hour of recumbent bike and rowing machine. Great cardio and the rowing machine supposedly works 80% of your muscles. Thanks for the videos.

As we get older, it’s easy to want to simply coast and not take care of our physical health. Many Americans fall into this sedentary life style.
When it comes to Billiards, it’s my belief that including cardio on a daily basis, this not only helps us remain fit, it also contributes to better mental health while at the table.

From one match to another. I was so tired that I couldn't even remember what balls I was shooting. I was like out in left field. Hi Ron, thanks for the video. First of all, good job on getting the workouts in. It's good that you mention this topic as some people might not be aware of this and how much it will impact their game. I think getting enough sleep and being healthy overall is so important, and not just for pool of course. If I play someone of equal skill, but I'm well rested and the other person is not, I'll probably make less mistakes and therefore have an edge. Same with the mental aspect of the game. There’s plenty to gain off the table to improve your performance on it. I'm a beginner and I occasionally bring this up when I talk to other players I meet. Most of them dismiss this or look at me funny haha.

So true Ron. People don’t realize how not being well rested affects your game and that funk can carry over into the following day(s). You can relate the same is true with golf & other sports. I have insomnia & drink 7 days a week so usually Mondays after a long weekend are the toughest for me plus a few random days during the week. There was a big 2 day 10 ball tournament (I didn’t play but followed several months ago and the rules were no early 10’s allowed (on break or combo/caroom & race to 7. We all know 10 ball already plays tougher & longer than 9 ball especially with no early 10s and no slop etc. some matches were well over an hour & the finals went into Monday morning like 5am. That’s insane. They should’ve done race to 5 or 6 with early 10’s. I won a big tournament at the same place in 1991 & played 13 matches to come back from losers bracket in double elimination to win. I was absolutely mentally and physically drained afterwords at 21. I’m now 54 so you got me by 15 years and Happy Birthday btw. Don’t put me in the drawing and Don’t eat too much Turkey tomorrow. Ha. Cheers.

You as a veteran tournament player have gone through the grind so you understand how difficult it is. Maybe that is the point with some tournaments. It’s a great idea to pick and choose accordingly before entering.
