Great video! Have you considered doing any videos on pitch calling and good pitch combinations to call when behind the plate? I want to learn more about that aspect of my game as a catcher. Thanks for the great content as always.
Great Video. I always tell my 13 year old catcher's "Right foot goes where the left one was". Love this video. I also find that the grip is essential. Very often the ball gets too deep in your palm and you end up throwing a changeup. Make sure the ball is in your fingers with the thumb underneath.
He gunned an Oriole last night by a hair with a great tag by Kingery. Realmuto always gets staggered back on his right with runners on base. His footwork and gun reminds me of Varitek in his prime. Hopefully JT catches as long as Varitek did. Even at the end of Varitek's career when his arm was a shell of his old self he was still a prime receiver and game caller.
Now, I’m not a baseball player, but based on that story you told when you were the backup catcher for one of the teams you were with in AAA, I don’t know if Matt is the best guy to give us catching tips lol.
Matt if he didn stagger till after seeing runner takeoff then he would backhand ball in dirt! Runner has that base already if in dirt AFTER he already running....easier base than good runners that jt read "dirtball" instead of "daylight"! Like one knee down where if runner DONT go ya then stick leg out and stay to block..but if see runner go then ya twisting hips and almost coming up OFF that knee as ball released! Agree in high-school if runner went on pitch in dirt most gone block and jt tip mitt to runner for good base running cause recover snd throw out is impossible!
Pop time is one of very important measurements for catchers how good they are. You should know or at least attempt to find out if you want to continue as a catcher. If you go to any show cases pop time is first thing they check.

Immediately sent this to my son to watch. He's been looking at tips to improve his pop time. Great video again!

Should the catcher be less staggered if the base runner is not really a threat to steal, allowing them to be in a better position to block?
Excellent instruction, and I'll make a mental note to look at this whenever I see a catcher about to throw to second.

Your defensive videos are the best available, bar none. Never full of yourself, never a know it all. Great.
Fun fact of the day: Bryce Harper used to be a catcher
Ya when he was with joey gallo
Matt, I noticed JT's left foot ends up in the batter's box. How would that affect any interference call?
Thanks this helps

If ur good enough to get drafted in the first round, ur good enough to give tips
G EJ I “think” they were joking because of a story Matt told in a previous video.

Is pop time measured from the catcher receiving to the middle infielder receiving?
yes
I already have almost a 2.0 pop but i still want to get as quick as possible
Realmuto is such a machine and beast
Too bad Im not a catcher
I'm a catcher
Same
What’s your pop time?
Honestly I never really thought to time it
