  • In this Indonesia Travel Vlog we FINALLY get to try the food you've all been telling us to try - GADO GADO!!! We were also lucky that the restaurant had ketoprak too. One of you even commented for us to go to this exact restaurant! 😱
If you've seen any of our other videos, you know that I don't like meat much and I prefer vegetarian options. Because of that, so many people told us to try gado gado, but we were having the hardest time finding it since we were searching in Jakarta at the end of Ramadan! We looked for street food stalls, checked any small restaurants we saw open, and eventually had to search on google maps. We found the PERFECT place to try gado gado......but it was closed! We ended up finding another gado gado restaurant (Gado Gado Cemara) inside of the Jakarta Citywalk mall which we hoped would be open since it was a mall. We got lucky!! We had the most amazing gado gado there and also ketoprak - our two new favorite foods! Even since we filmed this, we have eaten gado gado SO MANY TIMES!!! It's definitely the best Indonesian food in our opinion!

Fun fact in Indonesia there are other versions of gado gado, the first version is "lotek" this is the Sundanese version of gado gado, it is similar to gado gado but not boiled so it is more like a salad but uses peanuts as the sauce and generally in this version there are basil leaves in the mixture. The second version is "pecel" if I'm not mistaken this is commonly found in Java, pecel is almost similar to gado gado but generally consists of various vegetables and also some regions add flowers that are rich in nutrients. 😂

Check the variants of 'Sayur' in menus, it's all veggies base, but some of them also contain chicken / beef / or shrimp, so make sure ask the vendor does it contain any meats in ingredient. My best pick is ''Sayur Tumis Kangkung' (water spinach stir fry), 'Sayur Bayam' (spinach soup), 'Sayur Lontong' (rice cake in coconut milk with tofu, tempe and chayote), 'Sayur Chap Chay' (Mixed vegetables stir fryed, but it has a small portion of meats), and 'Lotek' (similar to gado-gado, but it's available in Sundanese region only such as in Bandung).

Gado-gado is a common menu all over Indonesia, just make sure not too spicy or not spicy when ordered.
Ketoprak is more a local Jakarta type of menu, not all over Indonesia. We call it “bihun” not noodle in it, its made fr rice.
Where ever you go in Indonesia, try the local dishes, some are spicy some are not, better request when you make the order. Beware, in some areas, spicy food is common like in West Sumatera and North Sulawesi.

If you like veggies then I suggest you to try "Urap-urap" it's like boiled veggies (usually the green ones) with seasoned grated coconut.
Also try "Pecel". It's also veggies with peanut sauce but the sauce is more aromatic then other peanut sauces as it has Kencur (aromatic ginger) in it and also usually spicy 🙈 also usually served with "Peyek" (savory crackers made of flour with peanuts or anchovies)

If you often travels and like this “gado-gado” sauce so much, there’s ready to eat or prepped sauces you can get in super markets, you can either boil them (mixed with water) or microwave it, it sold in different types (sate, gado-gado, ketoprak, etc), enak eco is one of the famous brand selling these well known Indonesian sauces export quality

Indonesian food basically plant based and very flexible even regular protein source in most Indonesian household are tempe and tofu, and it could be fried snack (gorengan) as well like fried tempe, vegetables fritters (bakwan), fried banana (pisang goreng) etc, so it's easier to get vegetarian or vegan food if you can just ask the seller, and you would surprise when you come to Bali later cause there's so many amazing cute vegan cafe especially in Ubud, Canggu and Seminyak, not only Indonesian food option but many vegan western food option. Bali becomes vegan haven for a reason.

Gado-gado’s sister, pecel sayur, which uses aromatic peanut sauce (from aromatic ginger), or its cousin, urap, which uses grated coconut in lieu of peanut sauce, might also be interesting to try.

We don't usually eat Ketoprak and Gado-gado plainly (without the peanut sauce) so don't hestitate eating it with peanut sauce (rather you should eat everything on it with peanut sauce, the more the better) it taste so much better with all of it blended together

To eat thise kind of dishes, younhave to mix it well first, especially the ketoprak (they pour soy sauce on the top to make it taste sweeter compare to gado2)

gotta get one from the street vendors man.. dunno about gado gado, never really liked it, but ketoprak vendors are nocturnal.. the best ones can be found usually in a busy rent housing areas at night, or maybe if you can find a night time open food court somewhere in the streets.. mall food courts are ok though.. they make edible or good ketoprak or gado gado, but not amazing..

If everyone ask you about spicy, just say to them add it but just a very little spicy because when youbsaid a little. For us its as same as one full spoon of chili and pepper 😂. And also if you want to eat ketoprak, try to mix it first with the peanut sauce. That would be amazing!
(You can find ketoprak or gado2 here in jakarta or many town in java island but you will rarely find it outside java island. But i promise there's a lot veggie food that similar to gado2 and ketoprak but most of them are made with soup. Just search or say the word "SAYUR". SAYUR means veggies 😊)
Fyi : one thing that we miss indonesia when we go to another country is the food because you really cannot get any food as memorable and good anywhere except in indonesia!
Ahh.. if we are talking about food, there's a ton of good food here so try the traditional food first (because in indonesia the stereotypes of food that you can find it everywhere is sate ayam, nasi goreng, nasi padang, any fried or fritters) .
